A short 45 minute boat ride away from the coast, laid-back Mabul is the diving gateway to the state's group of diving islands, Sipadan, Kapalai and Mabul. Initially popular due to its close proximity to the renowned waters of Sipadan, Pulau Mabul has steadily gained a reputation as a unique diving destination in its own right. A small oval island perched on the edge of a 2 kilometer square reef, Mabul is loved for its sandy beaches, rustic charm, and shallow water diving. A complete contrast to Sipadan's population of barracudas, turtles, and whale sharks, the shallow waters of Mabul are home to one of the world's richest concentrations of exotic small marine creatures. Here, divers of all levels can simply ride the gentle currents though coral gardens populated by cuttlefish, gobies, harlequin shrimps, bob-tail squids, and boxer crabs. Yet despite the petite size of its extraordinary inhabitants, the waters of Mabul boast an even greater diversity of species compared to those of Sipadan. Visitors to Pulau Mabul can choose from a range of resorts, or even stay on the converted drilling platform. There is plenty to do on this special island in between dives, such as sea-kayaking, mountain biking, beach volleyball, or simply enjoying the breeze.
