However unless you live in an English speaking country, or use English every day at work,

others, on the other hand, have many chances to speak English.

However they lack the confidence to make use of these chances.

Perhaps they are shy.

Or perhaps they learned English only from textbooks with their eyes and they feel their

And they don't know how to say the things that they want to say.

Today I'm going to teach you a technique that both of these kinds of people can use to improve

今天我要來教你一個技巧 來讓這兩種人來使用

their English speaking skills and pronunciation.

並且改善他們的英語口說以及發音

This technique is of course, shadowing.

這方法當然是 "跟讀法"

The idea behind shadowing is simple.

跟讀法背後的概念其實很簡單

You listen to some English, and you repeat it at the same time.

你聽英文 然後同時間跟著說出來

It could be a conversation or it could be a monologue.

它可以是一段對話 或是一段獨白

It doesn't matter.

這都無所謂

But you're listening and you're repeating at the same time.

但是你同時間都在聽而且複誦

Now, this does several things for you.

而這可以幫你幾件事

The first thing that it does for you is it trains your ear to listen very very carefully

首先 它訓練你耳朵仔細小心地聽

to the way that things are said.

你所聽到的內容

To the tone and the rhythm in which phrases are said.

聽清楚片語的音調以及速度

And the length and the number of pauses that are used in speech.

還有在說話當中停頓的長度以及次數

Because if you can't hear these things you can't copy them so in order to copy them you

因為如果你沒辦法聽清楚這些東西 你就無法跟著複誦 為了要能跟上

have to become very good at hearing them.

你必須要會聽這些重點

So very quickly your ear will become very accustomed to the rhythm and the tone and

way that people speak.

The second thing that it will do is it will really improve your pronunciation and your

you remember massive quantities of phrases and vocabulary.

But today I'm going to demonstrate the basic version of shadowing.

So as I said, first you need to find some audio to use for shadowing.

It could be a TV show or it could be a radio programme it could be a podcast or it could

be an audiobook it could be anything like that.

It should be to your level so if you are a beginner don't try to use something very advanced.

Try to use something at your level.

Maybe just a tiny bit more difficult is OK.

或是稍微難一點也是可以的

But it should be fairly easy for you because the exercise is not to improve your comprehension

但是你應該要覺得非常簡單 因為這個練習不是要增進你的理解力

the exercise is for you to improve your pronunciation and your speaking and really train your mouth

而是要讓你改善發音 還有你的口說 還有

to move as it should.

They're a kind of short story.

and I've printed out a text here and I have an MP3 which I've recorded which is on my

computer just behind this camera.

是事前在電腦上先錄好的

I have read the text several times and I've looked up any new words in the dictionary.

我把內容念了好幾遍 也把新的單字用字典查好了

I understand it perfectly.

我已經非常了解了

I've also listened to the MP3 several times so it's kind of easy for me now.

我也把音檔聽了好幾遍 所以現在對我來說比較容易

I understand it really well.

我非常的瞭解這篇故事了

So now I just want to be able to say this really easily.

所以現在我只想把這篇故事簡單的說出來

I'm going to demonstrate with this.

我開始要用這篇來示範了

I should point out that because I made these materials I'm going to be shadowing my own

我應該要先說 由於是我做的教材 所以由我來示範

voice, which is a little bit strange to be honest.

You should be shadowing a native speaker.

你應該要向母語人士做跟讀法

The goal is to copy that speaker so closely that you become that speaker.

你的目標就是盡可能模仿說話者 這樣你才可以變成那個人

Every single little pause and the kind of rhythm and everything you should be trying to copy those

每個小停頓 說話節奏 所有的細節你都應該盡可能

as closely as you can.

So, again I've read through this and I've listened to the MP3.

What I'm going to do now, is I'm going to shadow just one time was reading the text. Which

is quite easy to do.

Focus here, and I'm going to hit play.

He came down to stay whilst they were on, and was not impressed with my old 20-inch

"There's nothing wrong with this television," I replied, sniffily.

Ok, so that was reading the text and that was quite easy because I can already see what's

What I'm going to do now, which is a little more difficult is I'm going to get rid of

And that is basically it.

這就是跟讀法的技巧

it's that simple.

就是這麼簡單

At first you will find this quite hard.

起初 你會覺得這很難

And it is quite hard.

的確滿難的

It takes time, but repetition is the key.

需要花時間適應 但是一直重複作練習才是關鍵

I recommend that you pick some audio that you like and is good for your level and that

我建議你最好挑些你喜歡而且適合你的音檔

you repeat the same thing again and again and again and again over the course of a whole

這樣整個禮拜 你會不厭其煩的一直 重複 重複 重複 整個過程

week, because as I said repetition really is the key.

因為就像我說的 反覆練習是關鍵

You will find over the course of the week that it will become much much easier, and

你會發現整個禮拜作完跟讀法後 會變得越來越簡單

the idea is to basically keep practising until you feel like you are becoming the person.

最主要的目標就是一直練習 直到你變成說話的人一樣

You can copy them so closely that it feels like you are that speaker when you're speaking.

你會模仿並跟著說話 好像你就是說話的人一樣

For more advanced learners I recommend using a TV programme or a film.

對於更高階的學習者 我建議你可以用電視節目或是影片

Try finding a scene where there are two people talking and just shadow one of those two people.

找到一幕是兩個人在說話 然後跟著其中一個人作跟讀

again, try to become that speaker.

一樣 試著去變成說話的人

Copy them so closely that it feels like you are that speaker having that conversation,

模仿並跟著說話 就像你是對話當中的另一個人

and keep repeating until it becomes easy.

然後一直重複作 直到變簡單為止
