Korea's LG Electronics is looking to challenge the dominance of Samsung and Apple in the
global smartphone market with its latest device... the G2.
Connie Lee has more. Samsung and Apple better watch their backs as one of the biggest electronics
brands in the world, LG, is looking to knock them off their perch with its latest smartphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen... introducing the LG G2 "
Hundreds of tech fans, journalists and mobile industry insiders gathered in New York on
Wednesday... to watch LG unveil its newest flagship smartphone: the G2.
The new device... which was released in Korea a day later... features some innovative design
features.
For a start, it has buttons for volume control and picture-taking on the back of the phone.
It also debuts a "Knock Knock" feature... where the screen can be turned on and off
by tapping on it twice.
"I would say today it shows that they're really innovating to the next level, and Apple and
Samsung are going to have their work cut out for them to make sure that they're bringing
the product that's going to meet these levels."
LG is currently the world's THIRD largest smartphone maker... overtaking China's ZTE
and Huawei in the first three months of the year.
However, it still trails far behind the market's biggest players, Samsung Electronics and Apple.
"Our share in smartphones was 5-point-3 percent. But we are hoping to increase this number."
The G2 will retail for around 900 U.S. dollars and will be released globally by the end of
October.
