  • - [Mother] Laura's in time out

  • for throwing sand.

  • This is hilar,

  • do you think I'm taking a picture?

  • That would be a really cute picture,

  • but I'm vloggin' right now!

  • What kind of a snack are you having?

  • - Goldfish.

  • - Goldfish.

  • - And there's fish.

  • - [Mother] On the outside of the cup, too?

  • - Mm-hmm (affirmative).

  • - So Caleb has been begging and begging

  • to climb this tree, and we've just said,

  • "You can do it

  • "as long as you can come back down,"

  • and he keeps trying,

  • but then he needs help down,

  • and he's tested higher and higher.

  • You sure you can't climb down, bud?

  • 'Kay, we need the fire department.

  • - Here comes the fire department.

  • Okay, buddy.

  • Are you a kitty-cat caught in the tree?

  • - Yeah.

  • - What's your idea, what's your escape plan, huh?

  • - Get the fire fighter to save me.

  • - Yeah, the fire fighers'll

  • take care of me.

  • - I don't know.

  • - [Father] Did Papa save you?

  • - Yeah.

  • - Sit,

  • and just sit right there,

  • okay, buddy?

  • - Daddy, can I get up again?

  • I want to-

  • - [Father] No!

  • - I want to get that high!

  • I can get down from there!

  • - So Laura just came running into the house

  • to grab me,

  • she said, "Mom! There's a spider by the rocks!"

  • And I came out to see it.

  • Is it down there?

  • Oh my goodness!

  • That's called a beetle, Laura.

  • Are you nervous?

  • - Yes.

  • - [Mother] Do you want mama to get it?

  • - Mm-hmm (affirmative).

  • - [Mother] Oh look, it's moving!

  • Look how pretty it is, Laura!

  • She's like holding onto me, watching!

  • - [Father] Whatcha building?

  • - The decorates for the

  • playhouse.

  • - [Father] Have you enjoyed working with Papa?

  • - He's the best papa in the world, right?

  • - [Father] Right.

  • - He lets you build anything by yourself,

  • actually.

  • Once, he let me build my own thing.

  • - [Father] Going to come up to

  • a big jump off,

  • so you're going to have to jump, okay?

  • Good job!

  • (bluesy guitar)

  • - Yeah! (mumbles)

  • - Well we've been working a lot this morning,

  • we finalized putting the swingset solid into the ground.

  • We had poured concrete

  • and bolted it down so that it was stable and level.

  • - [Mother] So Elise has still been crocheting,

  • and check it out,

  • her string is so long now!

  • What?

  • - Can't you believe that a kid done this?

  • - Yeah, that's amazing!

  • That's amazing.

  • Laura, you just watching?

  • - Mm-hmm (affirmative).

  • Good job, Lisey!

  • - Thank you!

  • - New!

  • - Well, I'm not a handy-man,

  • but it's such a blessing to have Jeff,

  • Kendra's dad, to

  • show me some of these things,

  • and just the tools he has

  • and the methods he uses,

  • I'm learning a ton,

  • and it makes me want to build a fort

  • in our backyard,

  • or do some of these projects on my own.

  • - Well I still have had a bad cold,

  • and so, I just woke up from a good nap,

  • and Miss Laura, did you take a nap?

  • - Yeah.

  • - How was it?

  • - Good.

  • - Yeah?

  • What are the boys doing?

  • - Making a treehouse.

  • - Are you excited about it?

  • - Yeah.

  • And make a slide!

  • - Is there going to be a slide on it?

  • - Yeah!

  • - Are you going to play on the treehouse?

  • - Yeah.

  • - Yeah?

  • - I'm going to say,

  • "Ding dong, time for food!"

  • - Oh, you're going to say

  • "Ding dong, time for food,"

  • at the treehouse?

  • - Yeah.

  • - Do you want to go help build?

  • - Yeah!

  • - What tool do you want to use?

  • - A big one!

  • - A big one?

  • - Yeah.

  • - A big one?

  • Should we go see what the boys are doing?

  • - Yeah.

  • (bluesy guitar)

  • - Whoa!

  • Run, run, run, run!

  • Good one!

  • - It's a heart!

  • - Is there a heart on your shirt?

  • - Yeah.

  • - What does this say?

  • - It says Laura.

  • - Oh, it says Laura?

  • - Yeah.

  • - I think it says, "adorable."

  • - Oh.

  • I see my daddy!

  • - You see your daddy?

  • What's he doing?

  • - Picking the trees up.

  • (classical music)

  • - [Mother] All right,

  • Lisey's first time peeling.

  • So you slide it away.

  • - Oh.

  • - [Mother] Does that make sense?

  • Good job, Miss Lise.

  • All right, the next step is layering those apples

  • into the pan.

  • Very nice, Miss Elise.

  • - Thanks.

  • - [Mother] Now we're adding the topping.

  • Which is the best part, right?

  • - Mm-hmm (affirmative).

  • - [Woman] And just scooch it around.

  • - Oh!

  • - [Grandma] Woops.

  • - I'll clean it up!

  • I'll clean it up.

  • - [Grandma] No, it's all right.

  • Grandma's going to clean it up.

  • Let's go.

  • - [Mother] Oh!

  • I think we scared the sneeze out of her!

  • It's so beautiful up here at the cabin.

  • It's been so nice to spend a little bit more time here

  • than we usually can.

  • Unfortunately, we only have

  • a day and a half left,

  • and I feel like I'm already like sad about it

  • and plotting and planning

  • when we can come back.

  • It's just quiet and peaceful

  • and we don't have any Internet up here,

  • and so I can't be distracted by my phone

  • or social media, or anything.

  • Like it's just kind of easier to have

  • that special time together.

  • And I love the things the kids are learning

  • and the experiences they're having with their grandparents

  • and, it's a little bit of a magical place

  • for me and our family, I guess.

  • You guys have quite the crew here.

  • - Look, they're building the thing!

  • (ragtime music)

  • - Good.

  • - It's cool because out here,

  • you don't really need a sandbox,

  • because there's just sand.

  • Miss Laura, what are you making?

  • - Food!

  • - [Mother] Food? What kind of food?

  • - Marshmallows.

  • - [Mother] You're making marshmallows?

  • Looks like somebody's going to need a bath tonight!

  • - Maybe.

  • - I do?

  • - [Mother] Yeah, you do.

  • - Oh.

  • - [Mother] You need a bath tonight.

  • What you doing over there, bud?

  • - Playing football.

  • - [Mother] Playing football?

  • - I couldn't find a football,

  • so I'm just doing this.

  • - [Mother] Nice.

  • Way to be flexible.

  • Laura's in time-out

  • for throwing sand

  • You doing okay, Laura?

  • (mechanical tools)

  • - Mad!

  • - [Mother] You're mad?

  • - Yeah, I want to

  • play by Papa!

  • - [Mother] I know, I want you to be able

  • to go play with Papa, too,

  • but you can't yet,

  • 'cause you're in time-out.

  • - But I want to!

  • - [Mother] Do we throw sand?

  • No.

  • - I want to go out.

  • - [Mother] Okay, are you ready to go say sorry?

  • - Yeah!

  • - [Mother] All right.

  • You can get down.

  • That's why Papa's holding onto you!

  • - [Father] Would you like to go down a slide

  • from up there?

  • - Yeah, and go wee!

  • - All the kids want to try the new platform.

  • There's going to be a railing,

  • so they're hanging out with Papa up there.

  • - And then there's going to be a slide

  • to slide down!

  • - Like this!

  • - Does it feel pretty cool up here?

  • - Yeah!

  • - Do you like it?

  • Can you see over to the tree?

  • - [Mother] She's going to do dance parties

  • up in the treehouse.

  • - There it is,

  • she's doing the Papa!

  • - Doing the Papa!

  • - [Father] Do the Papa!

  • - Get your hips going.

  • - [Father] Do the Papa!

  • There it is.

  • - You're doing the Papa.

  • - [Father] There it is.

  • That's why we built this.

  • - Perfect, nailed it!

  • - (Mumbles)

  • - Put a slide up there.

  • One, two, three!

  • - [Papa] Turn sideways.

  • Your head!

  • - It feels really good!

  • - [Papa] And I threw you a curveball,

  • it's coming right at your head,

  • and then it curves down,

  • strike!

  • And you were like,

  • "Oh, it's at- right at my head!"

  • Here's the sinker.

  • Go ahead and hit it.

  • Oh, it sunk!

  • - Well it looks like we'll finish the fort tomorrow,

  • so it'll be fun to get that done.

  • Elise, do you see this little plant right here?

  • - [Elise] Mm-hmm (affirmative).

  • - [Father] That's a baby

  • Ponderosa pine tree.

  • - Wow.

  • - [Father] It will grow

  • to be one of these,

  • if it continues to grow.

  • - But the kid one over there

  • by the tree swing will,

  • it's a...

  • - [Father] It's a little bigger?

  • - It's a kid, it's a kid.

  • - [Father] Yep.

  • And then it's going to become a teenager.

  • - And then a mom!

  • - [Father] Awesome.

  • - Or a dad.

  • - All right, here's the apple crisp,

  • we're having it with ice cream on top.

  • - [Mother] Isn't it good?

  • - [Father] Yummy!

  • - Thank you for you, too.

  • Thank you! - [Grandma] Wow.

  • - Okay, look, you want to do this.

  • (shouting)

  • Whoa!

  • (kids making karate noises)

  • (bassy horn music)

  • - [Father] Flashlights are so cool.

  • - [All] Ooga-booga, ooga-booga, ooga-booga,

  • whoa!

  • - Oh, I think I'm out!

  • - [All] Ooga-booga, ooga-booga, ooga-booga, whoa!

  • Ooga-booga, ooga-booga, ooga-booga, whoa!

  • - [Father] Get him!

  • - J-House out!

  • - [Father] Caleb, you see the firefighters?

  • We're going to go see the forest fire.

  • (intense string music)

- [Mother] Laura's in time out
