I have loved reading from my very childhood.

從孩提時候我就愛讀書。

My own personal library

我擁有個人的圖書館

consisted of one hundred fifty thousand rare books

包括有各種宗教、哲學、詩歌與文學等

of all the religions, philosophies, poetry, literature.

十五萬本稀有的書籍。

And I have read all of them,

所有的書我都讀過，

but with no purpose; I enjoyed it.

沒有任何的目的，只是享受著閱讀。

My father used to go

通常我父親會去

at least three, four times to Bombay,

孟買三、四趟。

and he would ask all the children,

他總是會問孩子們，

"What would you like?"

「你們想要什麼？」

And he would ask me also,

他也會問問我，

"If you want anything

「如果你想要任何東西

I can note it down and bring it from Bombay."

我可以記下來，從孟買帶回來給你。」

I never asked him.

我從來沒有要求什麼。

Once I said, "I only want you

有一次我說：「我只要你

to come back

more human,

多一點人性，

less fatherly, more friendly,

少一點父親的尊嚴，像朋友一般的和善，

less dictatorial, more democratic.

少一點獨裁專制，多一點民主自由。

Bring a little more freedom for me when you come back."

當你回來時多帶點自由給我。」

He said, "But these things are not available in the market."

他說：「你要的這些東西在市場是買不到的。」

I said, "I know they are not available in the market,

我回答說：「我知道這些東西在市場買不到，

but these are the things I would like: a little more freedom,

但這些才是我想要的：多一點自由，

a little bigger rope,

寬鬆一點的束縛，

fewer orders, fewer commandments,

少一些命令與戒律，

and a little respect."

多一些尊重。」

No child

沒有任何孩子

has asked for respect.

會要求尊重。

You ask for toys,

孩子們會要求玩具，

sweets,

糖果點心，

clothes,

衣服，

a bicycle,

腳踏車

and things like that. You get them,

等等的東西。你雖得到這些東西，

but these are not the real things which are going to make your life

然而這些東西不會讓你的生命充滿

blissful.

喜樂。

I asked him for money only when

只有我想要買書時，

I wanted to purchase more books;

我才會跟父親拿錢；

I never asked money for anything else.

我從不會要錢去買其他東西。

And I told him,

我跟父親說：

"When I ask for money for books

「當我跟你拿錢買書時，

you had better give it to me."

你最好給我錢。」

He said, "What do you mean?"

他說：「你這是什麼意思？」

I said, "I simply mean that

我回答說：「如果你不給我買書錢，

if you don't give it to me then I will have to steal it.

我就會去偷錢。

I don't want to be

我不想成為

a thief

小偷，

but if you force me

但如果你逼我，

then there is no way.

那就沒辦法了。

You know I don't have money.

你知道我沒有錢，

I need these books

而我需要這些書，

and I am going to have them, that you know.

你是知道的，我一定會買這些書，

So if money is not given to me

如果你不給我錢買書，

then I will take it;

我還是會拿錢去買的。

and remember in your mind that it was you who forced me to steal."

請你牢牢記住，這是你逼我去偷錢的。」

He said, "No need to steal.

他說：「不需要偷錢，

Whenever you need money you simply come and take it."

不管什麼時候你需要錢，來跟我拿就是了。」

And I said, "You be assured it is only for the books,"

我會說：「你放心，我拿了錢一定是去買書的。」

but there was no need for the assurance because

其實根本不用保證，

he went on seeing my library growing in the house.

因為在家裡可以看得到我的圖書一直在增加中。

Slowly there was no place in the house

慢慢地，除了我的書以外

for anything other than my books.

家中已經放不下其他的東西了。

And my father said, "Now,

我父親說：「現在，

in our house, we had a library;

在我們的家裡頭有了 一座圖書館；

now in the library, we have a house!

如今是在這圖書館裡，我們有個房子！

And we all have to take care of your books

所有的家人都得好好照顧你的書籍，

because if something goes wrong with any book you make so much fuss,

一旦你的書有了什麼差錯，你會搞得全家雞犬不寧，

you create so much trouble

製造出很多的麻煩來。

that everybody is afraid of your books.

所以家裡的每一個人都怕你的書。

And they are everywhere;

然而家中到處都是你的書；

you cannot avoid stumbling on them.

你無法避免絆到它們。

And there are small children...."

況且家裡都是些小小孩...」

I said,

我說：

"Small children are not a problem to me;

「小小孩才不會給我帶來麻煩；

the problem is the older children.

麻煩的都是大小孩。

The smaller children -- l respect them so much

小小孩 ─ 我是非常敬重他們的

that they are very protective of my books."

而且他們很保護我的書。」

It was a strange thing to see in my house.

在我家裡會看到很奇怪的現象。

My younger brothers and sisters were all protective of my books

我弟妹們都很愛護我的書，

when I was not there:

每當我不在的時候，

nobody could touch my books.

沒有人可以去碰我的書。

And they would clean them and they would keep them

他們還會清理我的書，

in the right place, wherever I had put them,

將所有的書歸位，

so when I needed any book I could find it.

所以我要看任何一本書都能找得到。

And it was a simple matter because I was so respectful to them,

說來很簡單，因為我是如此的敬重弟妹們，

and they could not show their respect in any other way

因此他們以尊重我的書

than to be respectful to my books

來回敬我。

I said, "The real problems are the older children

我說：「真正的問題在那些大小孩

my uncles, my aunts,

像是叔叔、嬸嬸們，

my father's sisters,

我父親的姐妹們，

these are the people...my father's brothers-in-law --

他們才是製造麻煩的人...還有我父親的連襟 ─

these are the people who are the trouble.

I don't want anybody else

to mark my books, underline in my books,

任何人在我書裡畫重點作記號，

I hated the very idea that somebody should underline in my books.

我厭惡任何人在我的書中畫重點的這個想法。

One of my father's brothers-in-law --

我父親的連襟之一 ─

he was a professor

他是個教授

so he must have been in the habit --

所以他有這樣的習慣 ─

would write notes on my books.

在我書裡加註一些文字。

I had to tell him,

"This is simply

not only unmannerly, uncivilized,

太野蠻，太不文明了，

it shows

what kind of mind you have.

To me a book

is not just a book, it is a love affair.

If you underline any book

then you have to pay for it and take the book.

你就得要付錢買回去。

Then I don't want that book here,

我再也不要那本書留在這裡，

because one dirty fish

因為一尾髒掉的魚，

can make the whole pond dirty.

會弄髒整個池塘的。

I don't want any book prostituted -- you take it."

我不要任何一本書被蹂躪過 ─ 你拿走吧。」

He was very angry

他非常的生氣，

because he could not understand.

因為他根本無法理解。

I said, "You don't understand me because you don't know me much.

我說：「你不了解我因為你不太認識我。

You just talk to my father."

去跟我父親說吧。」

And my father said to him, "lt was your fault.

我父親會跟他說：「這是你的錯。

Why did you underline his book?

你為什麼要在他書裡頭畫重點呢？

Why did you write a note in his book?

你為什麼要在他的書裡註記呢？

What purpose did it serve to you? --

這對你有什麼作用呢？ ─

because the book will remain in his library.

這些是他圖書館裡的書。

In the first place you never asked his permission,

如果你想看他的書，

that you wanted to read his book.

一開始你就該徵得他的同意。

You will be surprised

你會很訝異的知道，

that by the time I was a matriculate

在我進入大學之前

I had read

就讀過

thousands of books

數以千計的書。

I was finished

我讀過

with Kahlil Gibran,

紀伯倫

Dostoevsky,

杜斯妥耶夫斯基

Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gorky,

托爾斯泰，契訶夫，高爾基，

Turgenev.

屠格涅夫等人的書。

When I was

當我讀到

finishing my intermediate

學期中，

I was finished with Socrates, Plato, Aristotle,

Bertrand Russell --

羅素等人的書 ─

all the philosophers that I could find in any library,

or borrow from anybody.

Why did you stop reading in 1980 and

how do you stay informed on world events?

I've heard that you enjoy movies...

and watch movies at times. Is that true?

Once in a while, because I don't read any more.

My own personal library was one hundred fifty thousand volumes,

of immense value,

and I was reading continuously.

But then I got my own truth

and all those books started seeming rubbish.

Slowly slowly

they became meaningless. Once in a while one book

這些書對我而言不再具有任何意義，偶爾會出現

may turn out

to have some significance,

很有意義很有價值的書，

but five years before I stopped it.

不過五年前我完全停止閱讀了。

It was too much.

實在是太過分了，

You read one hundred books

讀過一百本書後

and one book sometimes turns out to be of any meaning.

才可能有一本書是值得看的，

And that too is not going to

還有看過書後

increase my consciousness, my being.

又不會增長我的覺性，我的本性。

So for five years I have not read anything --

所以五年來我不再看書了 ─

no newspaper, no radio, no television.

也不看報紙，不聽收音機，不看電視。

Once in a while if my

sannyasins see a film which they feel

has something significant,

then I see it.

But very rarely.

For example, Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov,
