Well, today's lesson is on "need to" and "have to."

好，今天的主題是要區分 "need to" 及 "have to"。

What's the difference?

差別在哪呢？

Most of the time, if you come to Canada...

通常來說，當你在加拿大時...

Well, no. Sorry. I keep saying Canada! There's a big world out there speaks English, okay?

喔不，抱歉，我一直說加拿大！世界上還有許多國家也說著英文，對吧？

And that is England, Canada, America, that's the United States, Australia, New Zealand, India.

像是英國、加拿大、美洲，我指的是美國，澳洲、紐西蘭及印度。

They don't know it, but they speak English. Okay.

他們自己不知道，但他們說的是英文，沒錯。

It's an English colony.

印度曾是英國殖民地。

Um... bottom line. A lot of times when you taught grammar, you taught the necessities.

好，重點是，很多時候在教文法時，總會教到必須性助動詞。

You've got must, have to, blah blah blah...

有 must、have to 等等的詞。

But then when you actually go to these countries, you hear people say "I need to."

但當你真的去了這些國家，你會聽到其他人說 "I need to"。

Now, this is interesting because I actually had a student come to me one day, and we had like a twenty-minute discussion on "Teacher, you were wrong. Uh, I don't need to say have to."

聽著，這是件滿有趣的事，有天一位學生跑來找我我們花了大概二十分鐘討論－ 「老師，你錯了，呃，我不需要說 "have to"」

See? I said "I don't need to say have to"

有聽到嗎？我剛剛說「我不需要說 "have to"」

And we were talking about, and talking about, and tried to explain, and tried to, and finally I was...

接著我們講個不停，也試著去解釋，最後我終於...

Ahhh! You need to stop right now. No, you have to stop.

啊！！你需要馬上停下來。不，你必須停下來。

And he said "Why? What is the difference?"

接著他說「為什麼？差別在哪？」

I went "Need to, a benefit for you. Have to because there's a consequence."

我回答他「Need to 會讓你得到某個好處，而 have to 則會有某種結果。」

So, let's go to the board.

Alright. We say "have to." Having, I mean obtaining.

好的，當我們說 have to 或 having，也就是獲取。

When you have something, it belongs to you. Alright?

當你擁有某件東西，那麼也就代表它屬於你，對吧？

I have a marker. I have a book.

我有隻白板筆，我有本書。

They belong to me, or they're in my hand.

它們都屬於我，或是它們在我的手上。

When you have to. Let's break it down into two parts.

當你 have to，我們把它分成兩個部分來說。

The preposition or the particle "to" means...

介係詞或是質詞 "to" 的意思是...

oh, let's put it up there

噢我寫在上面好了。

It means either "goal" or "direction."

它的意思不是目標就是方向。

Okay? So, once you figure out "to" means goal or direction, it leads you to an interesting place.

好嗎？因此當你了解 to 的意思是目標或是方向之後，你會發掘許多不同的意思。

Have, as we know as "I have a marker." It is in my possession. Alright? Possess.

Have，像是剛剛說的「我有支白板筆」，這東西屬於我，懂嗎？擁有。

So, have means "possess," and to means "goal," or "direction."

因此 have 意思是擁有，而 to 意思是目標或是方向。

Why do we say have to?

為什麼我們會說 have to？

Well, literally, you have an obligation.

是這樣的，你是真的有某種義務。

It's in your direction that you must do, or there's going to be a problem for you.

你必須往這個特定的方向走，不然會惹上麻煩。

Alright? So, here's a good example.

懂嗎？來看個例子。

I have to go to the washroom right now.

我必須馬上去洗手間。

If I don't, the consequence is wet pants.

如果沒去的話，結果就是尿褲子。

This is not good. I don't want to wet my pants.

這不太好，我可不想尿溼我的褲子。

So I have to go.

所以我必須去廁所。

So when people hear you have to do something, they tend to respond with urgency.

當別人聽到你必須要去做某件事，他們會有比較緊急一點的回應。

You have to pay your taxes now!

你必須馬上繳清你的稅！

There's an urgency. There's an obligation because something will happen to you.

這滿緊急的，因為這是義務，不去完成的話會有事情發生。

Alright? There's a direction or goal. Something you may want that'll be affected by your actions.

懂嗎？有個方向或是目標，某件會因為你的行為而受到影響的事。

I have to do this. Alright?

我必須做這件事，好嗎？

I have to go. Why?

我必須離開，為什麼？

My wife is waiting with a shotgun.

我的老婆正提著獵槍等我回來。

If I'm not home by eight, I'm dead. Okay?

如果我八點前還沒到家，我就死定了，懂嗎？

So what's the difference with "need to?"

那麼 "need to" 不一樣的地方是？

Because often you hear Canadians say that instead of "have to."

因為你常會聽見加拿大人說 need to 而不是 have to。

Well, sometimes you wanna do things, and there's not the same urgency.

是這樣的，有時候你想做些不那麼緊急的事。

However, it is important to you.

但是那件事非常重要。

And here's the key.

秘訣在此。

Ne me ne me

Ne me ne me。

Ne ne ne ne ne me

Ne ne ne ne ne me。

Okay. You're not a big bird.

好，你可不是隻鳥。

Ne and me means me. The benefit is for me.

Ne 及 me 指的是我自己，

When I need to do something, I get a benefit from doing this.

當我需要去做某件事，我會從中得到某些好處。

I'm thinking more personally of the benefit that I am of the pain that I will suffer, or the problems I will get if I don't do it.

我是指更與個人相關的後果，像是我會遭受到的痛苦或是如果不去做所造成的麻煩。

So they're the same side of the coin. You have to do it. You need to do it.

因此它們就像是硬幣的同一面，你必須做，你需要做。

But one, I'm thinking about the benefit to me. The other I'm thinking about the problem that I'll get.

一個是，我要想想做這件事給我的好處是什麼，另一方面，我得想想我不做某件事會有什麼後果。

Sliding into it... need to.

I need to go to the washroom.

我需要去上廁所。

I'm just thinking about it. See my face?

I need to go. I'm deciding now is a good time.

I have to go. I don't have a choice. Wet pants? Bad!

我必須去了，沒有任何選擇，濕褲子？不好！

Need to go? I would feel better if took two minutes in the washroom. Benefit.

需要去的話呢？如果我能花兩分鐘去個廁所，我會感覺好一點，好處。

Ne-me. See?

Ne-me，懂了嗎？

And I don't mean "knee me." I mean good for me.

我的意思不是「用膝蓋踢我」，我意思是對我好的某件事情。

It rhymes, so you'll remember. Okay?

它們有押韻，這會讓你記得更快，好嗎？

So, I need to go to the washroom. There's a bebefit. I would feel much better.

所以我需要去上廁所，是因為某項好處，我會覺得更舒服。

I would feel much much better, yeah?

我會更舒服，懂嗎？

Have to go? I'm gonna have problems.

必須呢？我會惹上麻煩的。

So, simply, when you know... With have to, remember? We both have goals. See to?

因此，簡單地說，必須的話，記得嗎？這兩個都有個目標，看到 to 了對吧？

It's for goal or direction. There's something I want in both cases.

它代表著目標或是方向，在這兩種情況下我追求著某種結果。

But in the need to, "ne-me," it's all about me.

但在用 need to 時，ne-me，一切都只跟我有關。

What is my benefit from the situation?

我能從這件事得到的好處是什麼？

And have to? It's all about "I'm gonna have a problem, and I don't want a problem." See?

have to 呢？「我會遇到麻煩的，我可不想要有任何麻煩」懂嗎？

And here's another, well, it's not a mystery. Something I think you have to do. Before I go, I will say this.

接著有個，呃，也不是什麼祕密，有件我想你們必須要做的事，我會在離開前說完這件事。

Often to students, and this is the good one, so listen carefully, and this is what students might have a problem.

通常是對學生說，這件事也很重要，所以要仔細聽，這通常是學生會出錯的地方。

I told him, "You have to do your homework!"

我告訴他，「你必須去做你的作業！」

He came back and said "I don't have to do my homework. I need to do my homework."

他回來告訴我「我沒有必須做我的功課，我需要去做我的功課。」

And I went "I'm your teacher. You have to do this. You are my student. You need to do it for the benefit."

接著我說「我是你的老師，你必須做這件事，你是我的學生，你需要為了你自己做功課。」
