  • Hi. My name is Rebecca. In this lesson, we'll focus on six business English idioms.

    嗨!我是 Rebecca。在今天的課程中,我們將會教大家六個商業用語。

  • Even though they are somewhat advanced, follow along with me because they are used quite often. All right? Let's get started.

    即便有些片語滿高階的,不過大家還是要跟著我一起學起來,因為這些片語相當常見。好的,我們開始吧!

  • The first one: "You need to face the facts about the drop in sales."

    第一個:你要認清銷售下滑的事實。

  • So the idiom here is: "to face the facts".

    所以,這裡講的片語是「認清事實、面對現實」。

  • So, "to face the facts" means to accept a difficult situation. To accept the reality. Okay?

    To face the facts 指的是接受一個艱困的情形狀況。接受事實。

  • Accept the truth, to deal with the truth. That's what it means to face the facts.

接受真相,了解處理事實。這就是這個片語 to face the facts 的意思。

  • You're not going to say: "Face the facts", if you're talking about something good.

    如果你要講的是好事的話,就不可以用 face the facts。

  • But here, you see there was a drop in sales; sales went down, so you need to face the facts, means you have to accept the hard truth or the hard reality.

    然後這裡我們看到 drop in sales,銷售量下滑,所以要面對這個事實。指的就是你要接受這個糟糕的真相。

  • Next one: "Mr. Brown heads our team in NY."

    下一個:布朗先生領導我們在紐約的團隊。

  • So, the idiom here is: "to head the team".

    這個片語 to head the team,

  • You'll see... Here we have "face", here we have "head", and in fact, all of these, you'll have some part of the body as part of the business idiom.

    你們可以看到這裡有 face,這裡有 head,其實這些片語都是跟身體部位有關的商業用語。

  • It's just the way I chose them.

    我就是這樣挑選今天的片語的。

  • All right, so, "to head the team" means to... What do you think it means? To lead a group. All right?

    好的,to head the team 指的是...你們覺得是什麼意思? 「領導一個團隊。」

  • So, Mr. Brown is the manager, or he's the leader, or the head of this team in New York. "To head a team", that's the idiom.

    所以布朗先生是經理、是上司,或可以說他是紐約團隊的領導者。To head a team 就是「領導團隊」的意思。

  • Next one: "The marketing department is footing the bill."

    下一個:行銷部門負責付款這件事。

  • "The marketing department is footing the bill." Again, part of the body, the foot. All right?

    「行銷部門負責付款這件事。」又是身體的其中一個部位,腳。

  • "To foot a bill", "to foot the bill" means to take responsibility for payment. All right?

    To foot a bill 指的就是負責付款這件事。

  • I know it doesn't always make sense, and that's why it's an idiom. Okay?

    我知道有時候聽起來很怪,不過這就是慣用語啊!

  • The individual words don't reveal the meaning to you.

    個別的單字無法表達真正的意思,

  • You have to understand the entire expression, and that whole expression is called an idiom.

    必須了解整個片語的意思,然後整個片語才叫做慣用語。

  • So, "to foot the bill" means to take responsibility for paying for something.

    To foot the bill 指的就是負責付款這件事。

  • Next one: "Our HR manager" - our human resources manager - "has an eye for selecting good people."

    下一個:我們的人資部經理很會看人。

  • The expression here: "to have an eye for".

這個片語是 to have an eye for。

  • I should say this. "To have an eye for something" means to have a talent for something, to have the ability to notice something. All right?

To have an eye for something 指的就是對於某件事特別厲害,總是可以注意到不一樣的點。

  • So, our human resources manager has the ability to select good people. All right?

    所以我們人資部的經理很擅長選出值得栽培的員工。

  • Next one: "Who shouldered the blame for this disaster?"

    下一個:誰要為這個悲劇負責?

  • "Who shouldered the blame?"

    「誰要負責?」

  • Expression: "to shoulder the blame".

    這個用法是 To shoulder the blame。

  • "To shoulder the blame" means to take responsibility for something that went wrong, for a bad situation, for a difficult situation.

    這個片語指的是為出錯的事情、狀況負起責任。

  • "To shoulder the blame." Again, you see a part of the body is mentioned in each of these idioms. All right?

    To shoulder the blame 一樣,又是一個身體的部位了,每個片語都有一個身體的部位。

  • And the last one we have here is: "Jane was in over her head at work."

    最後一個:Jane 的工作對她來說太困難了。

  • "Jane was in over her head".

    Jane 的工作對她來說太困難了。

  • "To be in over your head" means to have too much responsibility, to have... To have something which is too difficult for you.

To be in over your head 意思是說背負著太大的責任某件事對你而言太困難了。

  • Maybe you took a course in university and it was just way beyond your ability in mathematics or something else, so you went in over your head; it was too hard for you, too difficult for you. Okay?

    或許你在大學時修了一堂課,可能是數學課或什麼的,不過超出了你的能力範圍,你無法理解,對你來說太困難,這樣懂嗎?

  • So: "Jane was in over her head at work." All right?

    「Jane 的工作對她來說太困難了。」

  • So, one of the things you need to do is you need to know how to complete these.

    所以你要知道的就是如何去完成這些工作。

  • Right? How we complete them. So, for example, let's look at them. Try not to look up here.

    對吧?如何完成這些工作,舉例來說我們不要看上面的解釋。

  • So if I say: what's the expression or what's the idiom?

    所以如果我問這是什麼片語?

  • "To face the facts", "To head the team", "To shoulder the blame", "To foot the bill",

    「認清事實、面對真相」「領導團隊」「為..負責」「付款」

  • "To have an eye for" - all right, I already said that - and: "To be in over your head".

    「對...有特別厲害的能力」還有「超出能力範圍」

  • All right? Let's review what they mean.

    我們再複習一次他們個別的意思。

  • So which one means that you have an ability to notice something? This one: "to have an eye for something". Good.

所以哪個片語是指對於某件事有特別厲害的能力?是這個 to have aneye for something。非常好。

  • Which one means that you take responsibility when something goes wrong or you took responsibility because something went wrong?

    哪個片語意思是你為某件出錯的事負起責任?

  • What did you do? You "shouldered the blame". Good. Okay?

    你要怎麼做才算負責?你 shoulder the blame 負起責任,很棒。

  • Which one means to accept that something bad has happened or accept the hard truth?

    哪個片語指的是接受某件壞事或是接受殘酷的真相?

  • This one: "to face the facts". Very good.

    這個 to face the facts。很好。

  • What does it mean when we say: "Someone is in over their head"?

當我們說「Someone is in over their head」是什麼意思?

  • It means that they've taken on something that's too difficult for them or they have too much of it. Okay?

    這是指他們接下了某件對他們來說太困難的事。

  • Next one: which one means that you are paying for something?

    下一個:哪個片語是指付錢?

  • Here: "to foot the bill". Okay?

    這個,to foot the bill。

  • So play with them like that. Sometimes try to guess how they finish, sometimes try to guess the meaning.

    我們用這樣的方式來考大家,一下子考大家填空,一下子考大家這是什麼意思。

  • And, best of all, try to write your own sentences using these business idioms. All right?

    最好的方法就是試著自己用這些片語造句,可以嗎?
