So, let's hear more about this story.
那麼,讓我們來聽聽這個故事的更多內容。
A Chinese AI app, that's artificial intelligence, called DeepSeek, has caught the attention of the entire tech industry and the world.
一款名為 DeepSeek 的中國 AI 應用程序(即人工智能)引起了整個科技行業和全世界的關注。
It was released on the 20th of January and has quickly risen to the top of Apple Store's download charts.
它於 1 月 20 日發佈,並迅速躍居蘋果商店下載排行榜榜首。
What makes DeepSeek so special is that the company claims the latest model was built using only $5.6 million, whereas OpenAI, that's ChatGPT's developer, spent $5 billion last year alone.
DeepSeek 的特別之處在於,該公司聲稱其最新模型僅耗資 560 萬美元,而 ChatGPT 的開發商 OpenAI 僅去年一年就花費了 50 億美元。
DeepSeek's entry into the market has caused the value of other tech stocks, such as NVIDIA's, to fall dramatically.
DeepSeek 的入市導致英偉達等其他科技股價值大幅下跌。
And our first headline is about the reaction from the AI industry.
我們的第一個標題是關於人工智能行業的反應。
And the headline is, Why is the AI world freaking out over China's DeepSeek?
標題是:為什麼人工智能世界對中國的 DeepSeek 感到恐慌?
That's from the Japan Times.
這是《日本時報》的報道。
OK, that headline again from the Japan Times.
好吧,又是《日本時報》的標題。
Why is the AI world freaking out over China's DeepSeek?
為什麼人工智能界對中國的 DeepSeek 感到恐慌?
So, this headline is suggesting that the AI world is freaking out about DeepSeek, and we're looking at this phrasal verb, freak out.
所以,這個標題表明,人工智能世界正在為 DeepSeek 而抓狂,我們正在看這個短語動詞,抓狂。
Yes, if you freak out, it means you lose emotional control.
是的,如果你抓狂了,就意味著你失去了情緒控制。
This can be because of emotions like shock, excitement, fear, or even anger.
這可能是由於震驚、興奮、恐懼甚至憤怒等情緒造成的。
So, why is the AI world freaking out?
那麼,人工智能世界為何如此恐慌?
Well, if you're an AI fan, or even a nerd, you might freak out with excitement.
如果你是人工智能迷,甚至是書呆子,你可能會興奮得抓狂。
It's a new tool.
這是一個新工具。
But this headline is talking about something else.
但這個標題說的是另一件事。
Yes, they're referring to the tech companies who might be freaking out with fear or panic because they're losing market share.
是的,他們指的是那些因為失去市場份額而感到恐懼或恐慌的科技公司。
Now, in the headline, freak out is followed by over.
現在,在標題中,"freak out "後面跟著 "over"。
But in our examples, we've been using about, freak out about.
但在我們的例子中,我們一直在使用 "關於"、"嚇壞了"。
Both about and over are fine.
大約和超過都可以。
Yes, we can also use freak out as an adjective, freaked out.
是的,我們也可以用 "嚇壞了 "作為形容詞。
We could say the AI world is freaked out.
可以說,人工智能世界已經被嚇壞了。
Yeah, and Georgie, I was freaked out last night when I bumped into my son wandering around the house in the middle of the night, 4am.
是啊,喬吉,昨晚半夜 4 點,我撞見我兒子在屋子裡轉悠,嚇死我了。
He really gave me a shock.
他真的把我嚇了一跳。
It really freaked me out.
這真的把我嚇壞了。
That does sound a bit scary.
聽起來確實有點嚇人。
Freak out is also a noun, freak out.
嚇壞也是一個名詞,freak out。
Other headlines are calling this the deep-seek freak out.
其他頭條新聞則稱這是 "深層搜索畸形"。
I had a freak out last week when I realised there was no food in the fridge.
上週,當我意識到冰箱裡沒有食物時,我嚇壞了。
That is a serious situation.
情況很嚴重。

It's got me and Georgie in it.
裡面有我和喬治。
You know, Georgie's some pretty good acting from me and Beth, isn't there?
我和貝絲都演得很好,不是嗎?
There's some fantastic acting from you and Beth.
你和貝絲的演技太棒了
We have freaking out, losing emotional control.
我們已經抓狂,情緒失控。
For example, I freaked out when my favourite actor walked past me in the street.
例如,當我最喜歡的演員在街上從我身邊走過時,我嚇壞了。
This is Learning English from the News, our podcast about the news headlines.
這裡是 "從新聞中學習英語",我們的播客介紹新聞標題。
Today we're talking about the launch of China's AI app, DeepSeek.
今天我們要討論的是中國人工智能應用 DeepSeek 的發佈。
DeepSeek was cheaper to make because it uses fewer advanced chips than other leading models like OpenAI.
與 OpenAI 等其他領先機型相比,DeepSeek 使用的先進芯片更少,是以製造成本更低。
That possibility caused the tech giant Nvidia, who make these chips, to lose almost $600 billion of its market value in one day.
這種可能性導致生產這些芯片的科技巨頭 Nvidia 在一天之內損失了近 6000 億美元的市值。
This is the biggest drop in the history of the US stock market, according to Bloomberg.
據彭博社報道,這是美國股市歷史上最大的跌幅。
Other tech company stocks have also fallen, and the US President Donald Trump has said it was a wake-up call for US companies who must focus on competing to win.
其他科技公司股票也紛紛下跌,美國總統唐納德-特朗普說,這給美國公司敲響了警鐘,它們必須集中精力在競爭中取勝。
He means they need to pay attention, take note of what's happened.
他的意思是,他們需要關注,注意所發生的一切。
And our next headline is about DeepSeek's effect on the stock market.
下一條頭條新聞是 DeepSeek 對股市的影響。
This one is from the BBC.
這則消息來自英國廣播公司(BBC)。
And that headline again from the BBC.
這又是 BBC 的頭條新聞。
So this headline is about how Nvidia, the American tech giant, lost $600 billion of its market share, and how DeepSeek is spooking the markets.
是以,這個標題是關於美國科技巨頭 Nvidia 如何失去了 6000 億美元的市場份額,以及 DeepSeek 如何令市場感到恐慌。
And we're looking at the word spook.
我們現在看到的是 "幽靈 "這個詞。
Neil, what can you tell us?
尼爾,你能告訴我們什麼?
Well, Georgie, I know you love Halloween.
喬治,我知道你喜歡萬聖節。
People dress up as things like ghosts and skeletons and scary things.
人們裝扮成鬼魂、骷髏和可怕的東西。
And we often use the word spooky as an adjective to describe such scary things.
我們經常用 "詭異 "這個形容詞來形容這些可怕的事情。
Yes, but in the headline, spook is a verb.
是的,但在標題中,"幽靈 "是一個動詞。
Now, if you spook a person or an animal, it means you frighten or scare them, often with a surprise.
現在,如果你嚇到了人或動物,就意味著你嚇到或嚇到了他們,通常是出其不意。
Yeah, but here we're talking about something a bit more abstract, the stock market.
是的,但在這裡我們談論的是更抽象的東西,即股市。
DeepSeek spooks US stock market.
DeepSeek 驚爆美國股市。
Now, this means that the release of the AI app has created a sudden sense of fear or nervousness for investors in the stock market.
現在,這意味著人工智能應用程序的發佈讓股市投資者突然感到恐懼或緊張。
Yes, this causes the investors to potentially sell their stocks and has created a big shock or disruption in the stock market.
是的,這導致投資者可能拋售股票,給股市帶來了巨大的衝擊或混亂。
Yeah, so just imagine how this big news in the tech world has caused people to panic.
是啊,試想一下,這個科技界的大新聞是如何引起人們的恐慌的。
We've had spook create a sudden sense of fear or nervousness.
我們已經讓幽靈產生了一種突如其來的恐懼感或緊張感。
For example, the government's sudden tax cuts spooked the markets.
例如,政府突如其來的減稅政策令市場感到恐慌。
This is Learning English from the News from BBC Learning English.
這裡是 BBC Learning English 的新聞學習英語。
We're talking about DeepSeek, China's new AI app that has shocked the tech industry.
我們說的是 DeepSeek,一款震驚科技界的中國新人工智能應用程序。
Now, some thought it was obvious that the US would dominate the AI race because of its many data centres and control over the best tips.
現在,有些人認為,美國顯然會在人工智能競賽中佔據主導地位,因為美國擁有眾多數據中心和對最佳技巧的控制權。
But now there is a sense that DeepSeek may have disrupted that confidence.
但現在有一種感覺是,DeepSeek 可能已經打破了這種信心。
And we have a headline about this.
我們有一個頭條新聞。
It's from Business Today and it says, AI markets shake up, global giants tumble as Chinese AI model DeepSeek disrupts markets.
它來自《今日商業》,上面寫道:中國人工智能模型 DeepSeek 顛覆市場,人工智能市場震盪,全球巨頭紛紛倒下。
That headline again from Business Today, AI markets shake up, global giants tumble as Chinese AI model DeepSeek disrupts markets.
這個標題還是來自《今日商業》,人工智能市場震盪,中國人工智能模型 DeepSeek 顛覆市場,全球巨頭紛紛倒下。
So again, we're hearing about the fall of these tech giants and the disruption in the market.
是以,我們再次聽到這些科技巨頭的倒下和市場的混亂。
Yes, but we're looking at the word shake up, AI market shake up.
是的,但我們看到的是 "撼動 "這個詞,人工智能市場的撼動。
We all know what shake means, Georgie.
我們都知道搖晃意味著什麼,喬治。
If you shake a drink, it mixes the ingredients.
如果搖一搖飲料,就能混合各種成分。
And if you're playing a game with some dice, for example, you shake them up and you don't know what numbers you're going to get.
例如,如果你在玩一個擲骰子的遊戲,你把骰子搖起來,你不知道會得到什麼數字。
It becomes different to what was before and unpredictable.
它變得不同於以往,變得不可預測。
OK, what's that got to do with AI?
好吧,這和人工智能有什麼關係?
Good question.
問得好。
Well, lots of people thought that the US would dominate the AI industry.
很多人都認為美國將主導人工智能產業。
But now there's a shake up.
但現在情況發生了變化。
That means there's been a change.
這意味著發生了變化。
It's become less predictable.
可預測性降低了。
Maybe China will be the leader in AI now.
也許現在中國將成為人工智能領域的領導者。
OK, there's been a shake up, a work related example.
好吧,發生了一些動盪,一個與工作有關的例子。
At work, you might have a shake up, different positions are created.
在工作中,你可能會遇到調整,會有不同的職位產生。
Some people might have to leave.
有些人可能不得不離開。
And we can also use shake up as a verb to shake something up.
我們還可以用 shake up 作為動詞,表示撼動某物。
DeepSeek has shaken up the tech industry.
DeepSeek 震撼了科技行業。
We've had a shake up, a change.
我們經歷了動盪和變革。
For example, the football team kept losing, so the coach decided to have a shake up.
例如,足球隊一直在輸球,於是教練決定進行調整。
She brought in some new players.
她帶來了一些新隊員。
