  • Mark, where do our fears come from?

  • Well, our fears are an interesting combination of learning, but also hard wiring.

  • And one of those would be the fear of heights.

  • That appears very early in babies.

  • And we can show that with this classic experiment in psychology called the visual cliff experiment.

  • So we have a surface here that a baby, if you put them on, generally feels very comfortable with, but then it disappears and creates the illusion of a drop down.

  • The baby is actually safe over there and can't fall, but visually it's like a cliff.

  • So are we testing babies today?

  • Absolutely.

  • Let's get a baby, see what happens.

  • So here's our little one.

  • Oh, my goodness, so cute. So quite comfortable now on the solid surface.

  • Now, look, our little one has spotted Dad.

  • Yeah, coming to the edge.

  • She's going to approach the cliff.

  • Now, you can see now, she's visually, she can see that this is possibly not safe.

  • Oh, wow.

  • So she's paused at this point, she's going no further.

  • To see this seemingly instinctive fear of heights in infant after infant is fascinating.

  • But I'm frightened of a lot more than just heights, and some of those other fears feel just as ingrained.

Mark, where do our fears come from?
