going to join us on the sofa but first we always enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane here are some of his 30 year old classics Gaz is with us now good morning good morning evening morning oh you're still in that rock and roll lifestyle where it's a bit tricky this time in the morning is it it's a bit tricky but I'm feeling good I'm happy to be here glad you are here when you look back when you look back that nearly do you want to go we're gonna go there yes nostalgia okay I love a bit of nostalgia don't you yeah when can you remember I think you were what were you 17 when you got your first record deal yeah we signed with EMI six album deal I think I was 17 yeah can you remember the kind of excitement the feeling just buzzing the fact that is the it was Parlophone the Beatles label you know we grew up you know listening to the Beatles just watching the Beatles interviews alone I think were inspiration for us kind of going into into music and now you know how are we gonna do interviews and all that sort of stuff and when you think about kind of what your expectations are at 17 they're inevitably naive but like big and full of adventure and you look you're here now better or worse do you think or just something completely unexpected in terms of how it all has panned out so far I mean it's incredible yeah looking back you know I mean we just we managed to make a record that just connected and it and it hit at the right time that summer in 95 yeah you know we made some good music and and it was sort of worth celebrating and we just done it we just finished a quick reunion get together that we started in 2020 and it was brilliant to play the songs again and just see everyone's faces in the crowd and and the songs still feel fresh yeah that day guys when you signed your first record deal did you walk can you remember do you walk out the building and just go well what did you do did you go and see I mean you're 17 she probably couldn't go for a not quite believing that we'd signed to Parlophone you know and back then you know six albums it was it was not unusual you know that it's kind of nowadays it's a big commitment it is to you it's trickier to kind of stick for major labels to stick with artists these days we'll get on to the newer stuff in a moment that line is it have I got this right we've got teeth nice and clean keep our teeth nice and keep our teeth nice and clean was that a kind of hygiene was not particularly on our minds I think it was a it was a tongue in cheek irony to this the fact that we were you know yeah we were kids probably not looking after ourselves very well so it was a kind of subliminal message to people to keep their teeth clean maybe or not maybe not maybe a bit was a bit more of a punk message when you write on your own now the message is the same because it has been a change I mean you're obviously still friends with the group and you had the reunion but you're the solo stuff now how different is it I mean it's it's from a completely different place yeah because we we wrote all together in Supergrass and there's that there's that connection that you get in a band you know that one voice kind of thing yeah you know I just write what I want to hear and I write what makes me feel good and it's also a way of processing thoughts you know ideas and experiences and so I just look at the world around me and kind of and and try and articulate it as as best I can and I think this records yeah this record it's it really came together really well well I'm gonna try to get into what the thoughts were for this one the new single long live the strange let's hear it I'm with you so don't ever change cos I love you I was just saying I hope that there was any child that was local to that play area didn't witness that because that just looked creepy yeah a little bit on the scary side but it was a it was an amazing day it was it's a that was filmed actually that was in a park nearby but was filmed at this mannequin graveyard in Grantham a mannequin graveyard yeah it's where all the mannequins go all the like the lost and forgotten mannequins aren't used anymore and so it's just this incredible farm land just with thousands and thousands of mannequins some areas are a bit kind of weird and creepy and then other spots are kind of mad for for an afternoon out and also they were doing these kind of things at Halloween as well where you could sort of take a party along and have this kind of weird kind of trippy experience and stuff but yeah it was a mad old day yeah really enjoyed it your children now of course I don't know they're their teens are they and they have musical talent I understand yeah they're both you know my oldest loves singing all the time my little one she's 14 she plays bass in a quite a few of her gigs.
