What's the vocabulary people need to understand this story in English? 你一直在看新聞頭條,Georgie。人們需要什麼詞彙才能用英語理解這個故事? We have 'shines new light,' 'buzz' and 'brews.' 我們要學習「闡明」、「興奮」、「沖泡的茶/咖啡」。 This is News Review from BBC Learning English. 這是 BBC 學英文的新聞回顧節目。 Let's have a look at our first headline. 讓我們來看看第一個標題。 This one's from Daily Coffee News: 這篇來自《每日咖啡新聞》。 Study Shines New Light on the Complex Arabica Coffee Genome. 研究揭示了複雜的阿拉比卡咖啡基因組。 So this headline is about a new scientific study in Italy into the coffee genome – that's the DNA of coffee. 這則新聞的標題是關於意大利對咖啡基因組(即咖啡的 DNA)進行的一項新的科學研究。 We're looking at the expression shines a new light. It contains shines. 我們正在研究「闡明」這一表達方式。包含了 shines 這個詞。 Now Georgie, the sun shines and the lights in this studio are shining on us. Can you tell us more? Georgie,太陽照耀著我們,攝影棚裡的燈光也照耀著我們。你能告訴我們更多嗎? Yes. Well, in a literal sense, when something shines, it gives out a bright light. 是的,從字面意義上來說,當什麼東西閃耀的時候,它就會發出亮光。 This lamp in the studio is shining a light on your big coffee stain on your script, Neil. 工作室裡的這盞燈正照著你劇本上的咖啡漬,Neil。 Yes, it's horrible and messy, isn't it? 是的,很可怕,很混亂,對嗎? OK, so lights and the sun can shine, but in this headline, it says that a study shines a light. How does that work? 燈光和太陽都可以照亮,但在這個標題中,它說的是一項研究「闡明」。這怎麼用呢? Well, here, like in lots of news headlines, they are using the language figuratively. 在這裡,就像很多新聞標題一樣,他們是在比喻性地使用這個用法」。 To shine a light on something means to draw attention to something so that we focus on it. 所謂「闡明」,是指吸引人們的注意力,讓我們關注它。 Yeah. And in this headline, it says shines a new light. That just means that obviously there was some research before, but this is new research. 是啊,標題上寫著「闡明」,這就意味著,很明顯之前有過一些研究,但這是新的研究。 What else can we shine a light on? 還有什麼能讓我們眼前一亮的? Well, Neil, you did your driving test recently, didn't you? The good news is you passed the driving part, but unfortunately, you failed the written part. Neil,你最近參加考駕照,是嗎?好消息是你通過了駕駛部分,但不幸的是你沒有通過筆試部分。 This really shone a light on your laziness when it comes to study. 這確實暴露了你在學習方面的懶惰。 Thanks, Georgie, for shining a light on my laziness. Let's look at that again. 謝謝你,Georgie,讓我看到了自己的懶惰。讓我們再看一遍。 Let's have our next headline. 我們來看看下一個標題。 This one's from Nature Publishing Group: 這標題來自《自然出版集團》: New buzz about coffee genes: A more complete genome sequence of world's most popular variety. 咖啡基因的新發現:世界上最受歡迎品種的更完整基因組序列。 So this headline, like the last one, emphasises that there's something new happening that people are interested in. 雖然這個標題和上一個標題一樣,強調的是人們感興趣的新事物正在發生, The word that we're looking at is buzz. It's a lovely word. 但我們關注的是「嗡嗡」這個詞。這是一個可愛的詞。 It sounds like what it is. It's the noise that bees make – buzz. 聽起來就是這樣。是蜜蜂發出的聲音——嗡嗡。 Yes, that is one meaning, but here it's used metaphorically to mean that there's excitement about this new coffee gene map. 是的,這是一個意思,但在這裡,它被用來比喻新的咖啡基因圖譜令人興奮。 It still reminds me of that sound buzz – there's a buzz of excitement. 這讓我想起了「嗡嗡」聲--興奮的嗡嗡聲。 Yes, and you've been looking at a buzz – that's a noun. But can it be used in other ways? 是的,你看到的是「興奮」是一個名詞。但它還能以其他方式使用嗎? Yes, it's also an adjective. That word is buzzing and it means excited. 是的,它也是一個形容詞。這個詞是 buzzing,意思是興奮。 I imagine that people are excited or buzzing about the possibility of new coffee flavours. 我猜想,人們對新咖啡口味的可能性感到興奮或嗡嗡作響。 It's also got a coffee-related meaning as well. When you drink too much coffee, you are buzzing. It means you are very awake. 它還有一個與咖啡有關的意思。當你喝了太多咖啡時,你就會「嗡嗡」作響。這意味著你非常清醒。 The coffee gives you a buzz. 咖啡讓人精神振奮。 Well, I'm buzzing to find out what our next headline's going to be, but before that, let's get a recap. 我迫不及待地想知道下一個頭條新聞是什麼,但在此之前,讓我們先來回顧一下。 Let's have our next headline. 我們來看看下一個標題。 This one's from the BBC. 這是 BBC 的報導。 New coffee genetic map promises better brews. 新的咖啡基因圖譜有望沖泡出更好的咖啡。 So we know what this story is about. We're looking this time at the word brews. Georgie, what is a brew? 所以我們知道這個故事是關於什麼的了。我們這次要看的是「沖泡」這個詞。Georgie,什麼是釀造? Well, brew or brews, as a noun, like it is in the headline, is a cup of tea or coffee, in this case coffee. Brew 或 Brews,作為名詞,就像標題中所說的那樣,是指一杯茶或咖啡,這裡指的是咖啡。 The new genetic map promises better brews – there's a chance of better coffee in the future. 新的基因圖譜有望釀造出更好的咖啡——未來有可能釀造出更好的咖啡。 In British English especially, it's very common to say, "I'm going to make a brew, do you want one?" Which is usually about tea. 特別是在英式英文中,「我要去泡一杯,你要嗎?」是很常見的說法。這通常是指茶。 Are you offering? Actually, I prefer coffee. 你要泡給我喝嗎?事實上,我更喜歡咖啡。 No, Neil, that was just an example. But when we finish this, you can make me a brew. 不,Neil,那只是個例子。不過等我們錄完這個,你就可以給我泡一杯了。 OK, I'll make some coffee. I've got some of those new delicious Arabica beans. 好吧,我去煮點咖啡。我有一些新的美味阿拉比卡咖啡豆。 But this word brew, is it used in any other ways? 但「沖泡」這個詞還有其他用法嗎? Yes. Brew is also a verb which has two meanings, both involving making a drink. 是的,「沖泡」也是一個動詞,有兩個意思,都是指製作飲料。 The most relevant for us here is the process of making tea or coffee. 這裡與我們最相關的是泡茶或咖啡的過程。 To brew tea or coffee, you mix them with hot water. You can also brew beer. 沖泡茶或咖啡時,需要將它們與熱水混合。你也可以說「釀造」啤酒。 Yes, but that's a different process. Let's look at that again. 是的,但這是一個不同的過程。讓我們再看一遍。 We've had shines a light -- draws attention to something. 我們學習了「shines a light」——引起注意。 Buzz -- an atmosphere of excitement. Buzz——興奮的氣氛。 And brew -- a cup of tea or coffee. 還有 brew——一杯茶或咖啡。 Now, if you've enjoyed this, we think you'll love this 6 Minute English book set all about coffee.
