And what was really important to us was that this became a space that you wanted to spend time in, not a crash pad between going to cafes and restaurants in the city.

This apartment was designed for two young professionals.

During COVID, this couple ended up moving up the coast from Sydney with about 20 of their friends, and they loved it so much they decided they didn't want to come back, and this project was born.

When we first got to the apartment, there was a relatively big hallway area.

There was an odd-shaped bedroom, poorly laid-out kitchen, living, dining area, and a bathroom that felt quite tight.

We removed the wall between the hallway and the living area to increase the sense of space, and relocated the kitchen, counter-intuitively closing off a window, but improving the overall feel.

We also added a study TV wine unit into the living space.

Part of trying to create a sense of calmness in this apartment was around limiting the amount of materials and finishes.

In the middle, our rest component has an integrated TV, with a black backdrop just so the TV totally disappears.

The furniture was laid out in the living space to help separate that living area and the kitchen and dining.

And then it has all these added functionalities of somewhere to drop a bag or have books displayed.

When we first got the apartment, there was a double bed in the space, and it just didn't feel right.

The space felt too small to fit a double bed in comfortably.

So instead, we went the other way and just decided to go with the king bed in the room.

To make that work, we built in joinery wall-to-wall, integrated lighting into it, and had a shelf behind the pillows that could then become the bedside tables.

The whole bathroom is finished in a light grey concrete tile.

A lot of people have this idea that it's okay to live in a small apartment in the city because you've got shops and cafes and public spaces, and that becomes your background, as if an apartment's just this place to sleep at night.

I think apartments, well-designed, really should function as any other home, and should be the space that you just want to spend time and relax, and is your escape from the busyness of that city, without ever feeling like you're in a confined box.
