Today, we are launching a campaign called HeForShe.

I'm reaching out to you because we need your help.

We want to end gender inequality

終結性別不平等

and to do this, we need everyone involved.

需要所有人的參與

This is the first campaign of its kind at the UN.

這是聯合國第一次推動這樣的計畫

We want to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change

我們希望能激勵所有的男人和男孩一同加入，改變現況

and we don't just want to talk about it.

不只是紙上談兵，討論這個目標

We want to try and make sure that it's tangible.

I was appointed as Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women six months ago

and the more I've spoken about feminism, the more I have realized

the fighting for women's rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating.

爭取女權，常常和「厭惡男人」畫上等號

If there is one thing I know for certain

it is that this has to stop.

For the record, feminism, by definition,

is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.

男性和女性都應享有同等的權利和機會

It is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.

不論是在政治上、經濟上、或社會上都應受平等對待

I started questioning gender-based assumptions a long time ago.

我很早就開始質疑關於性別的各種假設和規範

When I was 8, I was confused being called "bossy"

8歲時，有人說我很「霸道」，但我不能理解

because I wanted to direct the plays that we would put on for our parents.

我只不過想執導演給爸媽看的戲

but the boys were not.

而男生們選擇聽我的罷了

When at 14, I started to be sexualized by certain elements of the media

14歲時，我開始受媒體影響，學到身為女性該有的特徵

When at 15, my girlfriends started dropping out of their beloved sports teams

15歲的時候，我身旁的女孩們紛紛退出她們喜歡的球隊

because they didn't want to appear "muscley".

只因她們不想練出一身肌肉，看起來太男性化

When at 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings.

18歲時，我發現我的男生朋友沒辦法好好表達出他們心中的所有情緒

I decided that I was a feminist.

我決定當個女性主義者

And this seems uncomplicated to me.

就是這麼簡單

But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word.

不過最近我卻發現，「女性主義」這個詞不太受歡迎

Women are choosing not to identify as feminists.

女性不想被貼上「女性主義者」的標籤

Apparently, I'm among the ranks of women whose expressions are seen as too strong

我猜我應該就屬於「好強」

too aggressive, isolating, and anti-men

「太激進」、「搞孤立」、「厭惡男人」

unattractive, even.

甚至「喪失吸引力」的那群女人吧

Why has the word become such an uncomfortable one?

從什麼時候開始，女權主義成了大家排斥的字眼？

I am from Britain.

我來自英國

And I think it is right that I am paid the same as my male counterparts.

我認為，在工作上，我有權利和男性領同樣的薪水

I think it is right that I should be able to make decisions about my own body.

我也同樣擁有身體自主權

(Applause)

掌聲

I think it is right that women be involved on my behalf in the policies and the decisions that will affect my life.

我也認為，女性都該有權參與重要的決策和政策

I think it is right that socially I am afforded the same respect as men.

我相信，身為一位女性，在社會上我也該得到與男性一樣的尊重

But sadly, I can say that there is no one country in the world where all women can expect to receive these rights.

但我必須說，世界上沒有一個國家，能讓女性擁有上述權利

No country in the world can yet say that they have achieve gender equality.

沒有一個國家能說，他們已達到性別平等

These rights I consider to be human rights.

但是在我眼裡，這些權利都是基本人權

But I am one of the lucky ones.

我非常幸運

My life is a sheer privilege

從小到大都很順遂

because my parents didn't love me less because I was born a daughter.

我的父母並沒有因為我是女孩，就少疼我

My school did not limit me because I was a girl.

在學校也不會因為我是女生而受到差別待遇

My mentors didn't assume that I will go less far because I might give birth to a child one day.

我的導師更不會因為我有一天會生小孩，就假設我的成就會比較低

These influences were the gender equality ambassadors that made me who I am today.

父母、學校、老師都是我的性別平等大使，造就了今天的我

They may not know it, that they are the inadvertent feminists who are changing the world today.

他們或許不知道自己有多大影響力，但早不經意地成為女權人士，改變了現在的世界

We need more of those.

我們需要更多這樣的性別平等大使

And if you still hate the word, it is not the word that is important.

如果你還是不喜歡「女權主義」這個字，請記得，字的本身不是重點

It's the idea and the ambition behind it.

重點是「女權主義」所代表的想法和抱負

Because not all women have received the same rights that I have.

因為不是所有女性都像我這麼幸運，能受到平等對待

In fact, statistically, very few have been.

根據統計，其實是少之又少

In 1997, Hillary Clinton made a famous speech in Beijing about women's rights.

1997年，希拉蕊 柯林頓在北京發表了著名的女權演說

Sadly, many of the things that she wanted to change are still true today.

可惜的是，她當年想改變的不平等，到今天依然存在

But what stood out for me the most was that less than 30 percent of the audience were male.

但真正讓我震驚的是，只有不到30%的觀眾是男性

How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation?

如果不邀請男性一起參與，加入對話，我們要怎麼改變世界？

Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation.

因此今天，所有男人們，我在此正式邀請你們一同加入

Gender equality is your issue, too.

性別平等也是你們該爭取、捍衛的

Because to date, I've seen my father's role as a parent being valued less by society

因為直到今日，社會仍不看重男性身為父親的角色

despite my needing his presence, as a child, as much as my mother's.

儘管對小孩來說，父親和母親一樣重要

I've seen young men suffering from mental illness

我看過年輕男性受精神疾病所苦

unable to ask for help, for fear it would make them less of a men, or less of a man.

又無法開口求助，因為怕這麼做會讓他們失去男子氣概

In fact, in the U.K., suicide is the biggest killer of men, between 20 to 49

其實，在英國，20到49歲的男性的最大死因是自殺

eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease.

I've seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success.

我也看過，在扭曲的價值觀下，男性如何因為達不到社會對男人成功的要求，而變得脆弱

Men don't have the benefits of equality, either.

男人其實也沒有受到平等對待

We don't often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that they are.

And that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence.

當男人能獲得解放，自然也能改變女性的現況

If men don't have to be aggressive in order to be accepted

women won't feel compelled to be submissive.

If men don't have to control, women won't have to be controlled.

Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive.

Both men and women should feel free to be strong.

也都能自由地展現堅強

It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals.

我們應視性別為一個連續的光譜，而非兩組相斥的定義

If we stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by who we are

如果我們能停止用不對的角度來看性別，轉而看到每個人真正的樣貌

we can all be freer and this is what HeForShe is about.

我們一定能更自由，這也正是 HeForShe運動要做的

It's about freedom.

重點是自由

I want men to take up this mantle

我希望男性能挑起這個重責大任

so that their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from prejudice

不只讓你們的女兒、姊妹、和母親都能免受性別偏見之苦

but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human, too

更讓你們的兒子有權利表現出脆弱、傷心的一面

We claim those parts of themselves they abandoned.

我們要找回他們丟棄的那部分自我

And in doing so, be a more true and complete version of themselves.

進而成為更貼近自己真實樣貌、更完整的男人

You might be thinking, "who is this Harry Potter girl ?"

你可能會想，這個妙麗到底以為她是誰

"And what is she doing speaking at the U.N.?"

她憑什麼站在聯合國演講

And it's a really good question.

這是個好問題

I've been asking myself the same thing.

我也一直這麼問自己

All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make it better.

我只知道，我關心這個議題，也想做出改變

And having seen what I've seen and given the chance

看過太多人因性別受到歧視，所以當我有這個機會

I feel it is my responsibility to say something.

我自認有責任說點什麼

Statesman Edmund Burke said

政治家埃德蒙 柏克曾說

all that is needed for the forces of evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing.

男人、女人什麼也不做的話，邪惡必會戰勝良善

In my nervousness for this speech and in my moments of doubt

要在這演講，我很緊張，也曾自我懷疑

I've told myself firmly

但我堅定地告訴自己

If not me, who? If not now, when?

若不是我，還有誰？若非此刻，又待何時？

If you have similar doubts when opportunities are presented to you

當機會來到，你也同樣遲疑的話

I hope that those words will be helpful

Because the reality is, that if we do nothing

因為事實是，如果我們什麼也不做

it will take 75 years or for me, to be nearly 100

before women can expect to be paid the same as men for the same work

15.5 million girls will be married in the next 16 years as children

在未來的16年內，將有1500萬名女孩被迫結婚

and at current rates, it won't be until 2086 before all rural African girls can have a secondary education.

If you believe in equality

you might be one of those inadvertent feminists that I spoke of earlier

and for this, I applaud you.

We are struggling for a uniting word, but the good news is that we have a uniting movement.
