  • Hi guys!

  • Welcome to just speak,

  • the language tool that helps you

  • learn English by actually

  • giving you speaking practice!

  • To have a conversation in English

  • you need to be very good at 4 basic areas

  • Habit”, “Now”, “`FutureandPast

  • last week we looked atFuture

  • the week before that we looked atNow

  • and the week before we looked atHabit

  • today, we are going to look atPast

  • things that you did, or that somebody did, in the past

  • this is number 4 of the 4 main areas in English

  • so if you haven't seen any of the previous episodes

  • please go back and watch those episodes

  • before you watch this one

  • there are links up here

  • please go back and watch those episodes now

  • if you have seen the previous episodes

  • then let's continue

  • today we're looking at "Past"

  • the keyword for "Past" isdid

  • if you hear "did" in the question

  • that is a "Past" question

  • so, respond with thePastgrammar

  • again, as before, you need to start with a person

  • ”I”, ”you”, ”we”, ”they”, orheandshe

  • starting with a person in English is very important

  • so don't forget this! Person first!

  • then you need a verb

  • now are talking about past sentences

  • so that must be past tense,

  • which in English can be very, very difficult

  • in English we have 2 types of past verb

  • we have regular past verbs

  • which means you just add "ED"

  • for example,

  • wantbecomeswanted

  • listenbecomeslistened

  • startbecomesstarted

  • etc etc

  • EDadded to the base verb, simple

  • but we also have irregular verbs

  • now irregular verbs can change in anyway

  • they're very difficult and there are no rules

  • so for example

  • "eat" becomes "ate"

  • "drink" becomes "drank"

  • "sleep" becomes "slept"

  • really, really difficult

  • but your only option is to learn every one and

  • just speak

  • there is one hint I can give you with past tenses

  • if you don't know if it's irregular or regular

  • try adding "ED" anyway

  • there's a chance you will be correct

  • there's a chance you will be incorrect

  • but at least you're not stopping in the flow of conversation

  • and least you're still speaking

  • the other person will 100% understand if you say

  • Yesterday I eated bacon

  • they will understand

  • so don't worry, no problem, just speak

  • so, we have our "person" and our "past" verb

  • now, we need an object

  • a noun or an adjective

  • and then we need time

  • for example

  • “I ate pizza yesterday

  • “I drank wine last week

  • “I walked in the park this morning

  • some examples without objects would be

  • “I slept last night

  • “I talked this morning

  • OK, let's go, if you're watching with subtitles, great

  • but please turn off the subtitles now

  • this is not reading practice

  • this is listening practice and speaking practice

  • turn off the subtitles

  • you can turn them back on and watch again later

  • Here we go!

  • today we have 20 questions

  • you are going to have 5 seconds for each question

  • please respond with full grammar, okay?
