The time is one o'clock in the morning.

時間是凌晨一點。

The place is the Ritesville town art gallery.

這個地方是Ritesville鎮藝術畫廊。

A window opens and a man comes in.

一扇窗戶打開，一個男人走了進來。

His name is Harry Black, and he is a thief.

他的名字叫哈利布萊克，他是個小偷。

It is dark in the art gallery,  but Harry has a light.

美術館裡很黑，但哈利有一盞燈。

He looks across the room at a painting.

他看著房間對面的一幅畫。

"There it is!" he says.

“它來了！”他說。

Harry moves quickly across the room.

哈利迅速穿過房間。

He stands and looks at the painting.

他站起來看著這幅畫。

"A million dollars for this?" he thinks.

“這個一百萬？”他想。

"I don't understand it."

“我不明白。”

But he takes a knife from his coat.

但是他從外套裡拿出了一把刀。

Then he takes the painting very,  very slowly from its frame.

然後他非常非常緩慢地從畫框上取下這幅畫。

Harry goes back across the room to  the window, but he walks into a table.

哈利穿過房間回到窗戶，但他走進了一張桌子。

There is a beautiful blue glass vase on the table.

桌子上有一個漂亮的藍色玻璃花瓶。

It falls on the floor and  breaks into a hundred pieces.

它掉在地板上，碎成一百塊。

Harry smiles.

哈利微笑。

"Is that a million-dollar vase?" he thinks.

“那是一百萬美元的花瓶嗎？”他想。

"It isn't now!"

“現在不是！”

He runs across the pieces of glass to the window.

他跑過玻璃碎片走到窗邊。

Harry has a room in Mrs. Allen's rooming house.

哈利在艾倫太太的房間裡有一個房間。

He goes quietly up to his  room and closes the door.

他悄悄地走到自己的房間，關上了門。

Mrs. Allen and her daughter, Janey, are sleeping.

艾倫夫人和她的女兒珍妮正在睡覺。

They don't hear him.

他們不聽他的。

In his room, Harry takes  the painting from his bag.

在他的房間裡，Harry 從他的包裡取出那幅畫。

He puts it in a newspaper, then he  puts the newspaper under his bed.

他把它放在報紙上，然後把報紙放在他的床底下。

In the morning, Janey Allen is in the kitchen.

早上，珍妮艾倫在廚房裡。

She is putting old bottles into a box.

她正在把舊瓶子放進一個盒子裡。

"Recycling is important," Janey thinks.

“回收很重要，”珍妮想。

On the TV, a reporter is at  the Ritesville art gallery.

在電視上，一名記者在 Ritesville 美術館。

He is talking about the painting.

他在談論這幅畫。

"It's a million-dollar painting," he is saying.

“這是一幅價值百萬美元的畫作，”他說。

"Here's a photo of it."

“這是它的照片。”

Now the reporter is talking  about the blue glass vase.

現在記者說的是藍色玻璃花瓶。

"It's in a hundred pieces now," he says.

“現在有一百塊了，”他說。

Janey looks at the photo of the vase, then she  asks her mother, "Do you have any old bottles?"

珍妮看著花瓶的照片，然後問她媽媽：“你有舊瓶子嗎？”

"No," Mrs. Allen says.

“不，”艾倫太太說。

"That's all, Janey. But the newspaper  recycling truck is coming today."

“就是這樣，珍妮。但是報紙回收車今天就要來了。”

"Of course!" Janey says. "It's Friday!"

“當然！”珍妮說。 “是星期五！”

Harry isn't in his room.

哈利不在他的房間裡。

He is talking on his  telephone to a man in Seattle.

他正在和西雅圖的一個人通電話。

The man wants the painting, but Harry isn't happy.

男人想要這幅畫，但哈利不高興。

"Five thousand dollars?" Harry says.  "No! It's a million-dollar painting! ...

“五千塊錢？”哈利說。 “不！這是一百萬美元的畫作！......

What? ... No, I want fifty thousand, not five! ...

什麼？......不，我想要五萬，而不是五！......

What? ... The painting?

什麼？......這幅畫？

Yes, I have it, and it's OK."

是的，我有，沒關係。”

Janey is looking for old newspapers.

珍妮正在尋找舊報紙。

Early on Friday mornings, she takes  them from every room in the house.

星期五早上，她從房子的每個房間拿走它們。

Then later, the newspaper recycling truck arrives.

隨後，報紙回收車來了。

Janey opens Harry's door and looks into his room.

珍妮打開哈利的門，看著他的房間。

She always takes his old newspapers  or bottles for recycling.

她總是拿他的舊報紙或瓶子回收。

"Ah!" she thinks. "There's a  newspaper under Harry's bed."

“啊！”她想。 “哈利的床底下有一份報紙。”

Janey puts the old newspapers  into a black recycling box.

珍妮把舊報紙放進一個黑色的回收箱。

She runs from the house and sees the truck.

她從房子裡跑出來，看到了卡車。

"Wait!" she says. And she quickly  gives the box to one of the men.

“等待！”她說。她很快把盒子交給了其中一個男人。

Harry is coming back to the house.

哈利要回屋子了。

He sees the recycling truck, and he sees Janey.

他看到了回收卡車，也看到了珍妮。

"It's Friday!" he says.

“是星期五！”他說。

"The newspaper—! Oh, no!"

“報紙——！哦，不！”

Harry chases after the truck.

哈利追趕卡車。

"Wait! Wait!" he says.

“等等！”他說。

Janey watches him.

珍妮看著他。

"What is he doing?" she thinks.

“他在做什麼？”她想。

Harry jumps into the back of the truck.

哈利跳進卡車的後面。

"I want my newspaper!" he says.

“我要我的報紙！”他說。

"Where's my newspaper?"

“我的報紙呢？”

But there are thousands of  newspapers in the truck.

但是卡車裡有成千上萬份報紙。

Janey walks quickly from the house to the truck.

珍妮迅速從房子走到卡車。

"Why is your newspaper  important, Harry?" she asks.

“為什麼你的報紙很重要，哈利？”她問。

"It's two days old."

“已經兩天了。”

But Harry doesn't hear her.

但哈利沒有聽到她的聲音。

He is thinking, "My million-dollar painting!

他在想，“我的百萬美元畫作！

Where is it?"

它在哪裡？”

The men from the recycling  truck are watching Harry, too.

回收卡車上的人也在看著哈利。

But now Janey is looking at Harry's shoe.

但現在珍妮正在看哈利的鞋子。

"There's some blue glass in  Harry's shoe," Janey thinks.

“哈利的鞋子裡有一些藍色的玻璃，”珍妮想。

"Where—? Oh!" Suddenly, she remembers the photo  of the blue glass vase on the TV.

“哪裡——？哦！”突然，她想起了電視上那個藍色玻璃花瓶的照片。

She looks again at the piece  of glass in Harry's shoe.

她又看了看哈利鞋裡的那塊玻璃。

"Is it from the vase in the  art gallery?" she thinks.

“是從美術館裡的花瓶裡取出來的嗎？”她想。

"Is Harry Black the thief?"

“哈利布萊克是小偷嗎？”

The men from the recycling truck are angry.

回收車上的人很生氣。

"We're going now," they are saying.

“我們現在就走，”他們說。

"We're late."

“我們遲到了。”

"But I want my newspaper!" Harry says.

“但我想要我的報紙！”哈利說。

In the house, Janey is talking  to the police on the telephone.

在房子裡，珍妮正在和警察通電話。

"Maybe I'm wrong," she is saying.

“也許我錯了，”她說。

"But there's blue glass in his shoe ... What? ... Yes, he's looking for the newspaper now."

“但是他的鞋子裡有藍色玻璃……什麼？……是的，他現在在找報紙。”

Two policemen arrive quickly.

兩個警察很快就到了。

"Let's look at your shoe," they say to Harry.

“讓我們看看你的鞋子，”他們對哈利說。

Harry doesn't understand.

哈利不明白。

"What's wrong?" he asks.

“怎麼了？”他問。

One of the policemen takes  the glass from Harry's shoe.

一名警察從哈利的鞋裡取下玻璃杯。

"This is a very expensive  piece of glass," he says.

“這是一塊非常昂貴的玻璃，”他說。

"From a very expensive vase. Remember?"

“來自一個非常昂貴的花瓶。記得嗎？”

Suddenly, Harry understands.

突然，哈利明白了。

"Oh, no!" he says.

“不好了！”他說。

Police cars and policemen arrive.

警車和警察到達。

The men look in the truck for  the million-dollar painting.

男人們在卡車裡尋找價值百萬美元的畫作。

Later, they find the right newspaper  and they find the painting.

後來，他們找到了合適的報紙，找到了那幅畫。

"Good work, Janey," one of the policemen says.

“幹得好，珍妮，”其中一名警察說。

"And there's a reward."

“還有獎勵。”

"Maybe I can buy a painting with the reward!" Janey says.

“也許我可以用獎勵買一幅畫！”珍妮說。

"I like pictures!"

“我喜歡照片！”
