So, in this lesson, I'm going to be looking at some 我們將提到五個形容詞,讓你使用它時,聽起來學識淵博。所以,在這次課程,我將會帶你看一些 uncommon adjectives that you can use in your speech and the adjectives I have chosen are 超凡脫俗的形容詞。你可以在演說時將它們運用出來。這些我挑選過的形容詞 understood by most native English speakers regardless, but they are a little bit more 能不費力地就讓英語母語人士理解。但,它們有一點兒 advanced and a little bit more formal. So let's look at some sentences, some vocabulary, 艱深和有些正式。那我們就來看看這些單字和套用它們的句子吧! and see if we can understand what these words mean. 同時也看看我們是否能了解這幾個字的意思吧! The first one is: "maudlin". So, you can listen and repeat. One more time: "maudlin". All 第一個字是「maudlin」。那麼,你可以邊聽邊複誦。來,在一次「maudlin」,對 right, so let's look at the sentence: "Looking at old photos makes me maudlin." 好,那我們就來看看它的例句:「Looking at old photos makes me maudlin 看著這些舊照片讓我感傷了起來」 So, if you're looking at an old photo album of your childhood or your friends from elementary 讓我們來想想,如果你看到一本你孩童時期或你朋友們小學 school or high school, how do you generally feel? I guess it depends on what kind of experience 或中學時的舊相本,你大概會有什麼感覺?我想這或許依每個人的童年經驗不同 you had when you were a child, but in this context, I wanted it to mean like overly emotional 而異吧! 但,在這個句子的上下文,我要意指的是「多愁善感」 and sentimental. Okay? So the meaning of "maudlin" we're going to put: overly - and that is supposed 這樣可以嗎?所以「maudlin」的意思是... 我們在這放上「overly(過度的)」... 阿...這應該是 to be a "v" - overly emotional and - I'm going to put a plus for "and" - sentimental. Okay. v... 「過度易感的」 和 我要在這放上「and(和)」... 「多愁善感的。」 可以嗎? So you can say, for example: "Drinking makes me maudlin." So if you drink too much and 所以舉個例子,你可以說:「喝酒會讓我感傷起來」 也就是,如果你喝太多而 you start thinking about your past and your history, and you get very emotional, almost 又開始思考關於你的過往,你變得非常易被感情牽動。幾乎可以說是 like teary thinking about it - you feel very maudlin. Okay? 邊喝邊流淚邊思想過往這樣子,這就是你感到非常「maudlin(感傷的)」。可以跟得上嗎? The next adjective is: "lackadaisical". It's a very fun word to say, so say it with me: 那下一個單子是「lackadaisical」 這是個念起來很有趣的字。 好,跟著我一起念 "lackadaisical". Okay, so sentence: "Her work has been very lackadaisical lately." 「lackadaisical」...______ 好,再來是句子「她的工作狀況最近挺無進展」 Even when you think about the word and the sound of it like: "lackadaisical", it kind of sounds 這個字就算是你來揣測它的意思還有它的字音「lackadaisical」聽起來都很 like lazy in a way and that actually is what it means. So lazy and careless. Lazy 「懶散」,而這也正是它的字義,懶散和無精打采的。懶散 and careless; without care. Okay? So if I ask you: "Hey, how was your weekend? 和無精打采;無人留心的。可以嗎? 所以如果我問你;「嘿,你周末過得怎麼樣阿? Was it productive?" And you can say: "No, I was really lackadaisical." Or: "I felt very lackadaisical." 有收穫嗎?」你回答:「沒,我過得很lackadaisical(慵懶.無精打采的)」或是「我感到很lackadaisical(慵懶.無精打采)」 A person's work can be lackadaisical meaning that, again, lazy, careless, not a lot of 一個人的工作可能很lackadaisical是說,如同我剛剛說的,工作進行地很懶懶地,無精打采地, attention paid to it. Okay? 不留心在上面地。這樣可以理解嗎? All right, the next adjective is: "interminable". Okay? So say it with me: "interminable". Okay, 好的,下一個形容詞是「interminable」 好 跟著我說「interminable」 好 so: "His complaining is interminable!" 「His complaining is interminable他的抱怨沒完沒了」 Now, when we look at this adjective, you might see in the middle: "terminable", "termina", 現在,我們看到這個形容詞,我可以看到這個字的中間部分:「terminable」.「termina」 "termina", okay, what does this word sound like? It almost sounds like "terminate(終止)". Right? 「termina」,好,這個字聽起來像什麼呢?它幾乎聽起來像「terminate(終止)」這個字,對吧? Now, with the prefix: "in", this makes it negative, so not terminate, okay, not ending. 現在,有這個字首「in」,這變成否定,所以not terminate(不終止),那就是「不會結束」 So, if something is interminable, it's almost like it's endless or at least it feels like 所以,如果某個東西interminate,它幾乎是無盡的或至少讓人感到 it's endless, like it's not going to end. So his complaining, the way he complains is 永不終止,就像永遠沒有盡頭。所以他的抱怨,他抱怨的樣子 interminable; he always complains, it doesn't end. So, basically, never ending or it feels interminable(無盡的),就是他總是抱怨。抱怨不曾停止。所以,基本上來說,沒有盡頭或讓人感到 like it's never ending. Now, at the time of this video, we are in the middle of winter in Canada 這不會有盡頭。現在,在這部影片錄製的現在,我們正處於加拿大的冬季中旬 and it's still going on, it's March and, you know, some of us are starting to 而冬天還會繼續下去。現在是三月,在我們當中有些人會開始感到 feel that this winter is interminable; it's not going to end. 這個冬天interminable(永遠沒有盡頭);它不可能結束 This is 2014, by the way, at the time of recording. 現在是2014年,,順到一提,在錄製影片的現在。 All right, finally... Not finally, fourth. "Egregious". So very, very useful adjective. 好的,最後...不,不是最後,是第四個單字是「Egregious」一個非常非常有用的形容詞 "Sorry, but your logic is egregious." So if someone gives you an explanation for 「Sorry, but your logic is egregious 抱歉,但你的邏輯真得很糟糕」所以說,如果某個人給你一個某件事為何如此的理由 something and the explanation, the logic is: "That doesn't make sense", like if it doesn't 或解釋,但他解釋事情時講的邏輯卻「不合理」,或是他講的 make any sense, it is egregious which means incredibly bad or terrible. Okay? So let's 關連的幾乎彼此絲毫不相干。「很egregious(明顯很糟)」就是不可思議地糟或可怕地糟糕。這樣可以理解嗎?好,那, say: "Very bad". Normally, we talk about logic being egregious or a statement, something 就是我們說的:「很糟」。一般來說,我門會說邏輯或一個陳述抑或某個人 a person says as being egregious which just means it's just wrong. Okay? Now, we don't 說的話很糟,是指這邏輯或陳述或他說的話就是不對勁! 好,但我們不 really use it to talk about people, like you can't really say: "He is egregious. He is 能用它這個詞來形容人,比方說,你不能說「他很egregious,他真的 really bad." Normally, it's things or actions that are egregious, things you say or your 很糟糕。」我們一般只會說某個事物或某個動作很egregious(明顯很糟糕),你說的某事物或你的 logic is egregious. Okay? 邏輯egregious(明顯很糟糕),這樣懂嗎? And finally, we have the word: "visceral". So when we look at the sentence: 最後,我門來看這個字:「visceral」 當我們看到這個句子 "Skydiving" - which means jumping from a plane - "is an incredibly visceral experience." 『「skydiving高空彈跳-從飛機上往下跳」是一個很令人不敢相信地visceral經驗』 So imagine jumping out of a plane, how do you feel emotionally, physically? Well, you 試想一下如果你從飛機上往外跳下去,那是什麼感覺?身體上的感覺嗎?嗯...你 probably do feel very emotional and your senses are, you know, engaged. So if something is 大概會很強烈的感受到情緒的激動和感官的刺激吧!因為整個人投入進去了嘛!所以,如果某件事 visceral, it's emotional and instinctual which means that your senses are very much engaged 很visceral,就是很會讓你很情緒激昂或做出很本能的反應的,會讓你整個人感受很投入在其中的。 during this activity, whatever it is. So you might often hear this in promotions or commercials 在做這件事時,不管是什麼感受。所以你可能常常在促銷宣言或電影廣告裡聽到 for movies, so you might hear an action movie being called: "A visceral experience", or: 這個詞。你可能會聽到某部動作片被據稱是「一部visceral(跌盪蛔腸的)體驗」 "A visceral ride", which means it's a very like instinctual; it appeals to your instincts, 「a visceral ride」是指會讓你有很本能地反應的,訴諸你的本能。 attracts your instincts and your emotions. Not logical, not reasonable, but it appeals 牽動你本能反應或情緒的。完全不合邏輯的.沒理由的,但 to your emotions and your senses more than anything. 卻比任何事都牽動你的情緒和感官。 Okay, guys, so one more time. "Maudlin" means sad, depressing, sentimental. Okay? "Lackadaisical", 好,我們還有點時間。『「Maudlin」 就是 「感傷地」』 「Lackadaisical是指 lazy and careless. "Interminable", never ending. "Egregious", incredibly bad, a person's logic 懶散的.沒人留心理會的」「Interminable是沒完沒了的」「Egregious令人感到不感置信地糟糕,通常用在形容人的邏輯 or something they say. And: "visceral", emotional, instinctual, appeals to your senses. 或他說的事物」,而「visceral是很情緒性的.本能反應的,會訴諸你的感官的」。 So one more time guys, let's just do some pronunciation before I go. "Maudlin". "Lackadaisical". 阿~我們還有點時間再繼續說,那在我結束課堂前,我們就來實際練習發音這些單字「Maudlin」「Lackadaisical」 "Interminable". "Egregious". "Visceral". Nice job. 「Interminable」「Egregious」「Visceral」好,棒極了!
