It's been a while I've lived in New York City now for over 20 years. Brooklyn. 想了幾秒鐘,我現在住在紐約市,布魯克林區有20年了 um..but I'm from New Hampshire. I went to Syracuse University, or I majored in musical theater. 我念雪城大學,主修音樂劇 and yes you can major in that. I moved to New York City to pursue musical theater and I was thought you needed to be what's called a "triple threat." And a triple threat means you can act, sing, and dance. But when I moved to New York City, I found that I wasn't threatening at all. You could take out singing and you could take out dancing but I could still act. But I really enjoyed comedy and sketch comedy especially so I pursued a lot more comedy work 我非常喜歡喜劇,特別是喜劇小品,所以我找了很多演喜劇的工作 improv work and of course waitressing work. I was a very good waitress in New York City But I definitely pursued it on my own. You try very hard to get an agent. 我一切都靠自己,想找到經紀人非常困難 and I couldn't for a good 8 years. 整整八年我都找不到 and waited on tables and really struggled wondering why I went to school 邊當服務生邊納悶,我究竟幹嘛去念書 for theater if this was going to be my life just you know seeing that someone wanted uh... 念戲劇,如果服務生就是我此生唯一的工作,應付客人 a slice of lemon on the side of their...your coke 想在可樂杯緣旁加片檸檬片的要求 I thought wow I've must have been so much more over qualified for this job. But I did love it. Little by little you get a job here you get a job there. And actually I got a job that I submitted myself for 毛遂自薦後,我得到拍廣告的工作 for commercials. And it was those commercials that the Travel Channel eventually saw 這些廣告最後被TLC頻道看到 thought I had a great personality and called me into audition. So, all that work in waitressing slowly but surely paid off. The person who sought me out was from a production company Travel Channel had gone to this production company that called PineRidge Film and Television, great great company TLC 跑去這家製作公司,很棒的公司,叫做PineRidge 電視電影公司 and they said well you know we're looking to produce a show 他們說公司即將製作一個節目 they said we think we found a really good host. 他們認為找到了很棒的主持人 and I was like what's a host 我那時的反應是,主持人是啥 I really didn't..you know this was 13 years ago. Hosts were sort of perfect women who gesticulated and pointed 這是十三年前,當時的主持人就是神采姣好的女性,在螢幕上擺些誇張的手勢 and always had pleasant smiles on their faces and I just said well I'm not bad you know 面帶微笑,那時我想我應該不差 I really enjoy acting I love comedy and.. 我喜歡演戲,喜歡喜劇 when I got the job I mean I was petrified because I really had absolutely no idea what I was doing 當我得到那份工作我嚇壞了,因為我真的不知道我在做什麼 and I remember the first day of the shoot not knowing what I was doing 我還記的開拍的第一天,我什麼都不知道 and everything is improvised there is no script it's just you go with it 一切都要即興演出,沒有腳本,只有「做就對了」 Slowly but surely you know you get your groove and I instead of being an expert, I just kind of tapped into who I really was which was someone who got to do this for the first time. 我不是什麼專家,而就只是我自己而已,一個第一次接主持棒的人 and that really became what they wanted. They realized that, the Travel Channel, no we don't want an expert TLC了解到:不我們不想要一個專家 we like you. You're the girl next door experiencing it for the first time like most of the people who are watching the show You know keep, keep doing that and that approach had just... 我就繼續保持這種特質,這也成為.. uh I have no idea what I'm doing but I really enjoy meeting these people and I enjoy where I am 呃我根本不知道我在做什麼,但我很享受去不同的地方看到的人事物 and let's just go with that. That became really...I don't want to say shtick because that wasn't put on it was just really what was happening. I started back in 1999 with Great Vacation Homes 我主持的節目始於1999年的《Great Vacation Homes》 and then from there went to Great Hotels... 接著是《豪華大飯店》 let's see um...Passport to Europe, Passport to Latin America, Passport to China 接著..是《暢遊歐洲》、《暢遊拉丁美洲》、《暢遊中國》 Girls Meets Hawaii was back there somewhere. There were 3 years of Great Weekends 《Girls Meets Hawaii》也在這些節目之中,也包含三年的《珊曼莎的悠閒週末》 and then my last series was all shot in Asia. 最後是《珊曼莎暢遊亞洲》 I never ever in a million years thought I would have a job that was better than the one that I actually dreamed of for myself. I mean I thought I was going to be on Broadway I thought I was in my wildest dreams I'd go to Los Angeles and be in the sitcom... But I never thought someone would see those talents and say, hey, you actually be good travelling around the world 但我從沒想過會有人看到我的才華,然後說:嘿,你其實是個很棒的旅遊專家 even today I can't believe it it's my job. For a half hour episode we are there for four days and for an hour, eight. 為了拍一集半小時的節目,我們會在當地待四天,一小時的節目則是待八天 but usually 10 because of travel in and out so we're there 10 days for an hour episode. When I arrive in another country or even in another state in the United States I always have one day off before we start to shoot 當我抵達一個國家,或在美國就是另一州時,我總會在節目開拍前放一天假 and that gives me time to sort of get my bearings and also gives you time to adjust to a different time zone. 這可以讓我調整不乏,適應新的時區 but that is my day where I have to kind of get a grasp on where I am not just the city but the country and the culture 那是屬於我的一天,我必須用那段時間了解我在的地方,不只是那個城市,還有那整個國家、文化 and so I use that day wisely. Everyone wants my job until they hear actually how much effort goes into it. 所有人都羨慕我的工作,但他們聽到實際上要投入多少心力就卻步了 uh..usually 230 days out of a year. So you're on the road most of the time. Being on the road easily can disconnect you from home. That's why there's a lot of difficulty with the job. You are so focused on where you are 這也是為什麼這份工作有很多困難處,你往往專注於此時此刻的所在地 um..I'm in Singapore I'm in Nicaragua I'm in Cambodia and you're 我在新加坡、我在尼加拉瓜、我在柬埔寨 you just want to do a good job by the country, by the people, so you immersed yourself completely 你想好好在那個國家、那群人身旁完成工作,所以你會完全沉浸在那個環境 and then at the end of a 14-hour day there's very little energy, at least I have very little energy 最後在工作14小時候,你所剩的力氣不多,至少我是這樣 to get on the phone and make sure you know... my husband is doing alright, how's my mom, my sisters, you missed birthdays 我沒力氣再打電話,看看我的老公、媽媽、姊妹們過得好不好;你會錯過生日 you miss weddings, you miss reunions. All the things that make you, you know, a sister, a wife, a good daughter, a great friend disappears 所有那些姊妹、妻子、孝順的女兒該做的事你都沒做到 and that can be a big challenge to the job. For the other 135 days at the year I stay home. I don't come here in airports. I don't even like to get into a taxi. I order in Chinese. Watch good television. I basically become a real homebody 基本上我變成一個「宅女」 a real homebody which it's easy to do in the New York City in Brooklyn and so we've got great neighborhoods of fabulous ethnicity everywhere 在紐約很容易當個愛家的人,在布魯克林我們有很棒的生活圈,處處可見不同種族的人 so even though I am staying home I'm you know you're at home in the world. People are surprised to know that hotel rooms can actually be my nemesis. um you know and people see the hotel rooms I stay in 當人們發現飯店房間對我來說是種折磨時,總是很驚訝,他們看到我住的房間 they're 5 star, the top of the line but I live in hotels 往往是五星級,世界數一數二,但是我「住」在旅館裡 and just to get a sense of what it's like to live in hotels, 想嘗嘗住在旅館裡是什麼滋味嗎 imagine someone coming into your bedroom and rearranging the contents of the furniture every 2 days 請想像每兩天就有人跑進你的房間,改變家具的配置 and not just like big things like your bed and your bureau but little things like electrical sockets, you know light switches 且不只是床、櫃子等大的東西,還有像插座、電燈開關等細節 where's the light switch this time, is it by the bed is it by the doors is it by the bathrooms 這次的開關又在哪了?是在床旁邊、門旁邊還是廁所旁? is the light switch on the bulb on the base on the cord 是在燈泡上、底座上還是電線上? you know you're constantly rebooting the minutia of your life every 2 days 你要每兩天重新熟悉一次生活中的枝微末節 and it will slowly drive you insane 這會漸漸讓你抓狂 One time actually a hotel room broke my nose and this is a true story I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom but I had the floor plan of the hotel I stayed in the night before 我半夜爬起來想去廁所,但腦袋裡還想著前一天的房間配置 which had a little hallway off my bed and you know bathroom to the right 從床舖離開,廁所就在一條走道的右手邊 in this one it was just a wall and I walked you know walked right into BANG a wall 但那晚的房間只有一面牆,所以我直接砰地撞上牆面 heard this crunch and luckily I hit the wall head-on so there's no displacement 馬上我就聽到我鼻樑斷了,幸運的是我正面撞上牆壁,鼻樑沒有易位 but I had black eyes and a swollen nose and what's the worst thing you can do when you're on camera and break your nose 但我還是落得黑眼圈、腫脹的鼻子的下場。 撞斷鼻子! but yeah it can be violent even 5 star luxury hotels can beat the crap out of me 最高級的五星級飯店也能很暴力,狠狠修理我一頓 First time they asked me to be in a bathing suit 第一次他們要求我穿泳裝 you know it was just kind of an obvious choice I was in Hawaii 這個選項非常明顯,畢竟我當時在夏威夷 and so you know that that's going to be a part of your wardrobe and you're going to be on the beach 所以你知道泳衣一定是你服裝的一部分,大概有 you know 82 percent of the time 82%的時間都會待在海灘上 so it wasn't something that I wasn't expecting 所以這在我的預料之中 I knew it and 我早猜到 I knew that you know because well at the time I was in my early 30s so I thought well I should I be in a bikini If I'm gonna be in a bathing suit, I'm gonna be in a bikini 都要穿泳衣了,那就要穿比基尼 so I put a lot of that pressure on myself 所以我給自己不少壓力 yeah now I don't do any bikini work it's done 現在我可不穿比基尼了,那都結束了 I've retired. The bathing suits have all you know they're all 我退休了,比基尼再見,比基尼全都進了 with Smithsonian I think this is going to be a you know 史密森尼博物館,展覽名稱就叫 Travel Channel Bikini Retrospective 《旅遊生活頻道比基尼回顧展》 Anthony Bourdain has a bikini there. It's pretty hot and Andrew Zimmern and mine What I love about my job and how I approach it is that I get to spend time in other people's lives 我最愛我的工作之處在於,我可以花時間過其他人的生活 and I get to learn from them and about myself in the process 我可以向他們學習,也在過程中更了解自己 and I love that. I love just someone's everyday life and understanding where they come from 我很喜歡這樣。我喜歡別人的日常生活,看看他們從哪來 and when you're in another part of the world, someone's everyday life is extraordinary 當你在世界的另一端時,別人的日常生活可能非常精彩 and then you think how extraordinary your own life is so it's really reciprocal, it's great felling. Traveling all throughout the world and meeting women all around the world. We certainly have very different concepts of beauty, what makes us beautiful. We have different concepts of work, being professional The overall sense of being kind and generous is the same, 但整體來說對和善、大方的概念是一樣的 and I'm usually alone on my days off. Other women I can see will take care of me. There is sort of an acknowledgement of who we are and who we are in the whole world 過程中也會有種了解到我們是誰、在世界上扮演的角色的認知 and that's been a real joy to discover. The least appealing thing about my job has to be managing loneliness 我的工作最不討喜之處應該是孤獨 and it is a job. It is a part of my job because I'm essentially alone. You wake up alone, you go back to hotel alone. Of course I have my crew, but they have their lives and I have mine And no matter where you are you're 10 thousand miles away, you're 5 thousand, 2 thousand, 2 hundred miles away from 不管你在哪裡,你總是距離愛你的人、讓你成為你的人一大段距離 the people who love you who truly make you who you are. So loneliness becomes difficult to manage but it's a part of the job. Success I mean that is.. 成功?我是說... it has to be a combination of doing what makes you happy 成功必須要是建立在做讓自己快樂 makes you passionate. Certainly being with people and that is it. I love being with people. That is my passion. I could do it anywhere. I love the fact travel is a part of it but I love being with people 我在哪都可以和人相處,我很高興旅行是其中的一部份,但我真的很愛接觸新朋友 and it sounds very tried but be yourself. That really started me on my path. At first I thought I'm not a travel expert. I don't know what I'm doing I've never traveled. How could I possibly have this job And instead of fighting that just thought well this is me 但與其糾結在那裏,我就想,這就是我 and I'm just gonna make mistakes like a real person 我要像一般人一樣犯錯 and luckily that just became what people were really interested in. So you know the idea of making mistakes, be yourself, don't try to be somebody else 所以成功的秘訣是勇於犯錯、做自己、不要做別人 and just really be true to who you are. I think that is absolutely the key, absolutely.
