- While I found this point understandable, I also found this one a bit debatable. Talking again about nonviolent communication, a central idea of that book was that we weren't taught how to express our needs to begin with. Many of us were taught to suppress our needs and feelings and not to burden or bother others with them. And so we're not really fluent in the language of expressing our needs and feelings, though we are very fluent in the language of judgments and thoughts and criticisms. In a way, I think a very big percentage of people will check this one off. And so I kind of find this point moot. You got something to say, buddy? Next point, an excessive need to help others in order to feel good about oneself. This one definitely made me question myself as I've adopted a caregiver role in my relationships very easily and eagerly. I don't know what qualifies as an excessive need to help, though. What's the line between pathological and healthy altruism?
