The issue that we had at that time was there was not really any more room at the inn for for a lack of a better way of expressing that the Monterey folks work with the the Association of Zoos and Aquariums they have a group that specializes on kind of knowing everything there is to know about sea otters and and which facilities might have space to accept not only space but also expertise to accept very young sea otter pups and when Cruz abandoned was and when Cruz was was recovered there were really no more opportunities to place and so he was when the when the stranding folks get to that situation their their only choice at that point is humane euthanasia if there's not a space in the surrogacy program there's not a space at an accredited facility then the most humane thing to do at that point is to is to put that that pup down unfortunately which makes you know it's it's hard to wrap your mind around that this is a threatened species why could you do that but it's it's it is the most responsible thing to do we had staff out there caring for Bixby at the time and I got a phone call late it's like they just came up there's another young pup it's a male male sea otters are a little bit more they take a little bit more ingenuity I guess and and they're a bit more of a challenge to manage sometimes and so there we have to be careful with the the dynamic that we have in terms of the number of males and females that we would manage here with our with our exhibit but we made the choice at that time that you know this animal was was destined to be put down to be euthanized and you know we had our hands full with with two sea otters that we had that we were taking on already but we made the choice to to extend and do we do we did there and and and save that little sea otter and brought him back with Bixby on a private plane and and it never looked back he's he's an amazing amazing animal that we've learned a lot from well Dennis I'm not gonna lie you know through throughout that story you just told I'm kind of hearing some some Sarah McLaughlin in the background this kind of has that is there that SPCA kind of commercial vibe to it I mean when you think about these animals there they are undeniably probably one of the most adorable species not just here at the aquarium but but on the planet but when you hear about how much that they're going through you know hear about habitat loss when you hear about that how difficult the you know rehab and rehabilitation you know process is for them it's a lot different than like a California sea lion that can go out into a group and basically learn from the group so it seems like these animals have a lot kind of going against them yes but it's really cool to know that there's actually a whole bunch of people ourselves included that care very much about these critters and especially in that story just there when when the alternative was you know the animal not being here anymore that the decision was made to to prolong that animals life and now he's you know a private plane to Atlanta and now live in the suite life here in the cold water quest gallery I mean that's that's very much a positive so so what can our listeners with all of that being said what is one positive impact that our our listeners and our visitors can can have on southern sea otters well what is a you know one or a couple things that can you know kind of help this species out that any any person can can do yeah that's a great question Josh and that's something that's really a powerful message for us when we have these sea otters here in Atlanta they they're viewable visible to millions of guests every year and there are they are as I've said a very powerful conservation kind of case and the message is very simple and it's something that you hear a lot you know everybody has a role to play our goal here is is to inspire people to care about these animals we obviously care about them we want to do everything possible to make sure that these are animals that that that live for generations you know with without impact based on our activities but the honest truth is our activities have an impact on these animals and with the case of the southern sea otter there's a there's a number of things unfortunately these are animals that are succumbing or being exposed more and more to runoff related to agricultural runoff but also curiously they're very susceptible to a parasite called toxoplasmosis if you you might know of it through it's it's one of the reasons that if you're an expect it's one of the reasons that if you're an expectant mother you're not supposed to change or tend to your cat's litter box it's a it's a parasite that is is transmissible through cat feces and so what we're seeing is sea otters are coming up with this toxoplasmosis they're exposed to this toxoplasma and that's that's having an issue on that creates a lot of neurological issues for them they just they're not equipped to handle it and so we're seeing issues with people poorly or improperly disposing of their their pet waste essentially it's creating an issue for them probably related somewhat to just the population of that exists along that same coastline the number of cats number of pets feral or otherwise and and so that's an issue but also marine debris these are animals that are very curious and they they're they're actually one of the few species actually that use tools to to to help their efforts in getting into the hard-shelled invertebrates that they eat they'll go down and bring up a clam but also bring up a rock and smash the clam against the rock but they use other things and they're very curious in their environment and so when they're people are using a lot of single-use plastic bags those tend to unfortunately end up in the ocean and these are animals that there's there's animals that are you know photographed with bags on their head you know essentially not surviving that sort of interaction with with marine debris and so just being careful of what we're utilizing in our day-to-day lives trying to take every effort to use things that are more and are less likely to end up in the ocean and end up being an issue for these animals and the other animals that live in the marine environment so basically if you live in California or are visiting the coast of California just pick up after yourself and pick up after your pet and that can actually make a world of difference to these animals to these animals but but also again everybody has a role to play you know every every stream leads to the ocean and so even though we're hundreds of miles away from the ocean guests or residents of Atlanta have have a role to play too because it's not just a sea otter it's a sea turtle it's it's you know whales that are that are washing up with stomachs full of plus of single-use plastics sea otters or sorry sea turtles that are watching up with straws up there up their nose and things like that so lots of lots of decisions that people have to make in their day-to-day lives but understanding that you know just cutting back helps it makes a big difference right all good very very very good points there so Dennis thank you very much I've learned a way more about these animals than I worked here for almost seven years now and I learned a lot today about these incredible critters so before you go you do as we mentioned in the very beginning you do care for all of the adorable critters here at the aquarium out of all of them all those species and it honestly it might be the sea otter but what is your what's your favorite put me on the spot what is your favorite it's like you don't have a favorite child you know you can't answer yeah but you kind of do you got to do the honest answer is it probably depends on the day I find I just like a child just like a child it depends on what's what's going on you know right right now to be honest with you as a sitting here we have five little pufflings that have been hatched over the last last couple weeks and I'd say I'm kind of infatuated with watching my phone or little nest cams watching these little puffballs grow so quickly so I'm definitely into that sea otters are always a favorite anybody that maybe watched this watch the show or knows me knows that I'm a fan of our harbor seals and Rose our little female specifically is one that always gets me I spend time every day saying hi to her for sure she is adorable she's adorable yeah so didn't really answer your question it's okay nobody really has because everyone everyone's trying to yeah we have a lot of incredible animals here it's really it's really hard to favorite animals I've ever worked with is helping the OV team with with the manta rays behind us here just I mean they're all they're all very very they get to me yeah I mean this is a you know it's this is a very special place and obviously over 17 years you've been a huge part of this aquariums history and you've you know dedicated your life in the past 17 years of your life to to these to these incredible animals while you know having a family of you have your own kids and things like that that you're caring for so you're taking care of actually I just learned that puffling is a word unless you made that up nope that is the actual scientific term baby puff baby puffin a puffin chick is a puffling that's the cutest thing on the planet pretty sure you got that from Harry Potter but that's fine nope so with all of that with 17 years of history at this facility I'm gonna put you on the spot again what's your favorite memory of this place my favorite memory yeah favorite experience favorites just what flooding yeah there was a flood no no just the memories are oh okay good I was gonna say well that would be memorable honestly actually you know some of these transports you know being able to to go out in the field and be able to you know work with these animals and bring them back here and the the planning and all the expertise and just you know just takes a lot to pull that off and being in the role that I am or that that's my responsibility it's it's to see that kind of happen and the animals come here and they make it into the into the into the habitats and seeing them you know thrive is all the memories kind of flood back to those moments so with respect to you know maybe the last sea otter transport was probably one of them and it was you know nice you know to get sea otters to Atlanta from California you have to you know there's a lot that goes into moving them they have to stay cold we've learned that the best way is just to charter a private plane so it's a sounds a little bougie I guess but it is for their own best interest we can get get a sea otter pup here in a couple of hours from the coast of California which is which is what what they need and so the last time when we were moving Gibson and Mara it was a beautiful plane I was I felt kind of bad because we were like moving all these like wet things and chests of ice on this plane that I once we were in the air I learned the charter before us I don't know if I'm allowed to say this or not but it was Bruno Mars was taken to to Hawaii in that same plane so just a little bit uh so it was it was Bruno Mars's plane and it wasn't it wasn't Taylor Swift's no nice because in a previous episode we talked to Andy from the the sea lion team but I remember from all the old footage you were a part of yeah those those guys coming here so as the listeners know I started my career at Georgia Aquarium here in Atlanta with our sea lion team so all the little guys that I cared for when I first started back in 2016 here were all animals that literally you had just brought from California months before yeah yeah we could sit here for a couple hours just talking about animal transports and things like that yeah for sure but yeah Neptune and Jupiter were animals that I brought back I remember seeing Andy at the facility where those animals were being housed at the time he was here so he's in the same footage in a different role but yeah very cool well I mean I think now I think we have a reason for you to come back I think that we could have a part two to talk all about good transports you've done great today so Dennis HelloFresh is paying for it so um I wasn't really heavily considering how much these things cost but $75 for a gold tray I was about to say better be gold 24 karat white and gold kitchen tools and gadgets the luxe eight piece cooking tools with anti-slip handles this was $78 but it's an eight piece set it's got tongs a whisk ice cream scoop garlic crush out of all of those things we currently own a we own tongs from Daiso a garlic crush that Sam's dad gave him a veggie peeler from Daiso and a thrifted ice cream scoop so it'll be nice to have a a set of matching items oh this I had to get every single thing from this collection this is called the typhoon pasta storage canister it was $22 and it is the most beautiful shade of blue oh I got a gold milk jug I currently have silver milk jugs for my coffee machine seeing as I'm going to have a gold swan sitting on top of the coffee machine had to get a gold milk jug and it actually looks like it might be quite a nice one it was $20 which is quite cheap actually I worked as a barista for many years while I was going through uni and uh milk jugs can get very very expensive so $20 is not bad at all for that this serves no practical purpose whatsoever it's just decorative towel bar that I'm going to be using as a door handle for my fridge I currently have a silver fridge and ideally I like to paint it white and give it gold handles it's it's just I think it would look so nice these I got marble and brass coasters it's a set of six the set of six was $46 so hopefully that'll match my cheese board I'm very excited about these because it's so satisfying just so deeply satisfying to look at pictures of people's pantries and to see like all of the jars neatly lined up and it's like that one's pasta and that's rice and they're all in the same container so they're all the same size and height and color and then you can like print off nice labels and stick them on and oh that's just I just I want it I want the symmetry so I got a bunch of them I got them in like every single size this is a magnetic knife holder now I got this because my friends Alex and Beck they have a magnetic knife strip in their kitchen above their stove and when he's cooking he just like reaches up and just grabs his knife and chops it and then he just like slaps it back on the wall and the first time I saw I was like that is the coolest I need to get one of those I didn't really want to get this but it was the best option that I found the options were pretty terrible I knew I wanted a gold drying rack for my dishes but none of them were just gold like all of them had black on them now this this was $45 which again I thought was a fair bit it's a paper towel holder my current paper towel holder is one that I thrifted now these I'm so excited I'm so excited about these these are salt and pepper mills and uh they're made by Peugeot it feels too fancy for me and also the price is too fancy for me compost bin I've been super into gardening during lockdown and our current compost bin it's it's great the tea canister $13 my god so worth it the bread bin was $40 but it looks beautiful the kettle to match which is so cute oh my god the utensil storage container now this this is this is the big one this is the one that I was like do it $520 but to be fair before I actually put through the order I had to fact check and I found several stores in Australia that sell green pan pots and pans and this set on other websites looked like it was about 700 800 even a thousand dollars on some websites so I was like well cheaper on amazon but is it going to be the real thing I got scales to match all of the jars this one handmade in USA this was $112 for a nice bucket now these $40 for a set of three they come in rose gold and black and then standard gold these hopefully these match the other ones from earlier so you know the set that had like the pizza cutter and the ice cream scoop I think it's the same company I got this this is a sponge holder an unnecessary purchase now for anyone that doesn't know I have pet chickens and uh they lay eggs a lot of eggs so many in fact that I can't eat all of them between my husband and I we can't eat all of them we have a surplus so I was thinking of maybe putting a little basket out the front of my house and putting a sign up so the people in my street can just come take eggs as they please and I thought well I need a nice sign if I'm going to do that so farm fresh eggs that was $45 for the sign it's made of timber and it looks very very sweet but but but nuggers that's just how could I not I got some egg cartons and I got a stamp that says please return carton I got these these are liquor spouts how could I say no to this $32 it's divine it's so cool a gold chicken to hold the eggs that my chooks lay now this is a blue compost box I got a white one but also I decided to get a blue one as well because we we have a bit of compost and this egg rack so I've got the the chicken egg basket and also I figured well look I can have the rack up on the wall with the farm fresh butt nuggets up above it and it'll be cute and fun and okay yes to be fair $55 for what is quite literally like three pieces of timber knocked together with nails ridiculous anyone could just do that themselves but in the spirit of testing kitchen accessories from amazon we're gonna give it a try so that's everything that I picked up I'm so excited to see what turns up some of them are supposed to so I think it's time to put this little grumpy bird to bed so I'll see you guys in finally we didn't own a whisk we only had like an electric one a ladle a vegetable peeler a chunky garlic crush oh that's a hang on do we have to crush garlic we do we do yes and a spatula spatula oh and one of those things too okay this is a the hole this was a good idea i second-guessed myself because it was a little bit plus more than i would have liked to have paid but it's very nice oh a little tiny whisk garlic crush we'll use that veggie peeler do you need to peel any veggies uh no the peeling didn't peel anymore okay well i feel like i should peel something because i want to show this have you guys ever seen a naked chili is this a red hot chili pepper no this shouldn't be on the internet can i have our chili our chili peeler it shall henceforth be known as the chili peeler yeah can i have oh oh it does does not pass the chili test so the amazon one wins it's actually excellent and now i'm kind of concerned because i've just rubbed chili literally all over my hands and um oh dear do not touch my eyes oh this is cool so it actually like it crushes and then it spins itself all the way around and then it's got these little teeth that like push the garlic back through to make sure that it's all out wow this is the fanciest garlic crush i've ever seen okay let's go muscles all right it's having a it had a bit of a hard time there with two cloves this isn't as good as our garlic crush yep that one is not as easy oh that is not great you try oh yeah it flexes like i can't even okay that one uh might look incredible but a little bit of a write-off you can't flex it yeah right oh these are so cute hang on do i like them more than oh they're so much better oh they are so much better than ours oh my god they're so much better these feel like rubbish in comparison okay well to be fair i think i got these for 50 cents from um but anyway oh these are so nice i love them all right i feel like this big knife is not cutting as well as the rounded edge one that i used on the chili i don't know if it's just not as sharp or what it's very fat it's a very thick kind of blade it's weird because it's super sharp but it's just not cutting right what's next time to cook the chicken in the fry pan wait wait wait wait no no oh wow you didn't wait no sorry holy crap there's so many it's like a 10 piece set it's a 10 piece set oh my lord i feel like we are not opening this right oh it's so cute oh my god it's so heavy wait it's a thermo lawn infinity professional ceramic non-stick responsible technology we don't like our technology to be irresponsible we don't like to stay out late at night and dream and get bogged down no we like responsible technology the handle is gold brush gold yeah it's really nice they're so these are this is this has blown my mind i did not expect this i i did not expect this i didn't mind spending a little bit more on this set because i thought well we don't have a set and this is supposed to be one of those all-inclusive everything that you need kind of things how much was it well let's not talk about that let's not talk about it behold the 10 piece set now when it said 10 pieces part of me was thinking oh yes there's going to be 10 pots and no they they count the pot and the lid as like separate piece i feel ripped off a little bit ripped off but anyway so we have a pretty decent sized pot that i don't think that we need tonight and then a bigger size i suppose a good one for pasta a good one for dumplings teeny tiny little fry pan it looks like it'll be good for omelets we have bigger one but that's quite deep that's like a saucepan yeah and we've got oh the big the big chunker this keeps the 5g rays out and then this dan this is what you're going to be cooking our chicken on tonight oh these aren't teflon nice they're ceramic oh bird safe yes if you own a parrot don't cook with teflon it'll kill them it suffocates their little lungs it's toxic to them don't do it so this is ceramic completely safe oh this is so nice i'm quite blown away by how nice these are this is i want to get this as like gifts for people oh it's so good no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no yeah degrease the pan behold oh whoa it's like a bird oil dispenser and also the thing something i separate to the oil dispenser were these little things which you're supposed to put on bottles i actually think they were intended for alcohol i think that it was supposed to be for spirits and water and stuff but my thought process was that this came with a little silver one but because everything that i got is gold i hope this fits yes matchy matchy matchy oh it's so cute okay uh we need to fill this bad boy up with oil this holds a lot more than the one currently used so uh just keep going okay slow down oh it's so satisfying it's oh my god i love it this is my favorite thing this is definitely my favorite thing not that we needed it because these are supposed to be non-stick but uh look i just i wanted the satisfaction of pouring it oh and we're done thank you dan thank you so much for cooking this smells delightful um can i just say looking at all this stuff spread out in front of us does our kitchen not look magnificent so stylish uh we're going to be using these items over the course of a month or so and then next month as we continue with our kitchen renovation i'll be able to report back and tell you how these things have held up because uh dan didn't notice really gonna put them through the paces this one right yeah yeah that one there the first one that we used of this the gold plating looks like it started to wear away so don't take the first impressions as gospel because we do need to try these things out long term but as far as our first meal cooking with our new kitchen accessories i'm very happy and how amazing it looks it really brings me joy so with that let's i'm so excited to try this uh okay so how do we do this what are we
