如何觀看新聞媒體並保持理智 (How to Watch the News Media and Stay Sane)
Intro
Hello VoiceTubers! Good to see you today. I am Mia. I'm gonna start this episode by asking you a question, “Have you watched the news today?”
In this modern age, news has become our main resource to catch up with the world. While it is everywhere in our life, it is also a tool to control our emotions and minds. So how to watch the news objectively without being controlled? We’ll talk about that later and now let’s take a look at the sentence.

Sentence
While pretending to inform us about the state of the world, the news has become a formidable instrument of self-forgetting.

Pronunciation Tips
1. Inform us: (1) Linking (2) Two parts: in-form /ɪnˈfɔːrm/
2. Formidable: (1) Four parts: for-mi-da-ble /fɔːrˈmɪd.ə.bəl/ (2) Notice the stress is in the first part.
3. Instrument: (1) Three parts: in-stru-ment /ˈɪn.strə.mənt/

Vocabulary
1. inform (v) 告知 KK [ɪnˋfɔrm] IPA /ɪnˈfɔːrm/
Def: to tell someone about particular facts
The store didn’t inform customers about the change of the activity.
這家商店沒有告知顧客活動的變化。

2. formidable (a) 可怕的 KK [ˋfɔrmɪdəb!] IPA /fɔːrˈmɪd.ə.bəl/
Def: causing you to have fear or respect for something or someone because that thing or person is large, powerful, or difficult
The invention of such a formidable weapon causes people to live in fear.
如此強大武器的誕生使人們生活在恐懼之中。

3. instrument (n) 手段 KK [ˋɪnstrəmənt]IPA /ˈɪn.strə.mənt/
Def: a way of achieving or causing something
News has already become a kind of instrument to control people’s thoughts and mindsets.
新聞已經成為一種控制人們思想和心態的工具。

Outro
Like today’s sentence, “While pretending to inform us about the state of the world, the news has become a formidable instrument of self-forgetting.”
Yes, the news is an instrument that might hinder us to be mindful, for it looks so legit and we accord prestige to news that we would never think it might close the alternative avenues for us to know more about the facts.
More things about new that you should know are all in this video. Watch this video and become a real active audience in this digital era. I am Mia, see you next week!
