Intro:
Hello VoiceTubers! How are you doing today? I am your host, Mia.
This week I hung out with my foreign friends, and then after dinner, we went to a convenience store.
While somehow, I and three other friends, none of them from Asia countries, started to discuss "whether convenience stores in Taiwan are convenient?"
I mean for me, for sure that convenience store is convenient. You can grab your breakfast there without waiting too long when you are in a rush. And when you are hungry late at night, when most of the restaurants and food stands are closed, a convenience store can cater to your need with various choices of chips or other stuff.
While one of my foreign friends said he didn't think convenience stores are convenient because they don't sell butter, ham, or cheese.
As a Taiwanese who has relied on convenience stores for most of my life, I can't entirely agree with his opinion. I want to change it and tell him how "convenient" the convenience store is.
So here comes today's video, "How Can You Change Somebody's Opinion?"
Let's see the Pronunciation Challenge today and answer this question later!

Sentence:
Facts don't convince people. Especially if they already have an opinion.
I’ll repeat the sentence again slowly.
Facts don't convince people. Especially if they already have an opinion.

Pronunciation tips:
1. convince: Two syllables in this word, “con” and “vince.” The pronunciation of vowel “o” in the first syllable is /ə/. So the first syllable is pronounced /kən/,/kən/. Now, is the second syllable. The stress is in the second syllable, and the vowel “i” here is a short vowel, so is pronounced /ɪ/, /ɪ/. And then “ce” is the /s/ sound. So the second syllable is /vɪns/. Combining the two together, we get /kənˈvɪns/, /kənˈvɪns/.
2. especially: Four syllables, es-pe-cial-ly. Pleased noted that the first syllable, es, the “e” is not pronounced /ɜ/ or /ə/, but / ɪ/, /ɪ/. So /ɪs/,/ɪs/. After the first syllable, raise your intonation, for the stress is here. Another part needed to pay attention to is the third syllable, “cial.” We usually pronounce “cial” as /ʃ.əl/, /ʃ.əl/. Combining all together, we get/ɪˈspeʃ.əl.i/, /ɪˈspeʃ.əl.i/.
3. opinion: Three syllables. Let’s pay attention to the first vowel “o.” The pronunciation is /ə/, /ə/, not /ɑ/ or /ɔ/. So is /əˈpɪn.jən/, /əˈpɪn.jən/.

Outro
Back to the convenience store question, before we started that discussion, I already firmly believed that it is super hard to change a person's point of view. And a book tells me, don't argue with people about things that are not important; even if you win, what can you acquire from it? Especially the convenience store problem, to debate whether it's convenient or not is nonsense. Whatever you say, I still think it is convenient, but I will also respect your opinion. Because we come from different cultural and growth backgrounds, it is reasonable that we have different ideas about one thing. I really recommend this video; check it out and let me know what you think about it, and don't forget to record your pronunciation challenge! I am kinda looking forward to that! I am Mia, see you next time!
