"Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: 'With great power comes great responsibility.' This is my gift, my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-Man." - Peter Parker, 'Spider-Man', 2002.
Hello Voicetube listeners! My name is Hubert and I'll be your host for today's episode of the Pronunciation Challenge. Today, we'll be talking about one of my favorite superheroes, Spider-Man! I always thought he was the coolest superhero aside from Wolverine. Have you ever wished that you could have their super powers? If we could have their powers, what would be the science behind it? I mean, what would have to actually happen within our bodies for us to be able to stick to walls or have Spidey-Sense?! This video talks about what it would take to actually become Spider-Man, scientifically.
Today's featured sentence.
But as organisms get bigger, their volume increases in height, width, and length, as a cube, or by 3 on the scale factor.
I’ll say that again.
But as organisms get bigger, their volume increases in height, width, and length, as a cube, or by 3 on the scale factor.
Ok, now time for the Pronunciation Tips.
For the first word, we have Organism Four syllables. “OR” sounds exactly like the word, “or”. “GAN” has a short U sound. “NI” has a short i sound and “SM” when spelt out, can look like “z i m”. Organism.
Next up, we have Volume Two syllables “VOL” has a short u sound. “UME” has a long U sound. Volume.
Lastly, we have, Width One syllable. I chose this one because the spelling can confuse some people. Don’t worry about the letter D and just say this word without it! Width!
Moving onto Vocabulary!
The first word is: 1. Organism Definition a single living plant, animal, virus, etc. Used in a sentence you could say, “This organism is too small to be seen with the naked eye.”
Next word, 2. Volume Definition the amount of space that is contained within an object or solid shape Used in a sentence, you could say: “What’s the volume of this cylinder?”
And lastly, 3. Factor Definition: a fact or situation that influences the result of something Used in a sentence, you could say: “His lack of effort was the main factor for not getting a promotion at work.”
Now that you know the science behind getting superpowers, would you still want to be Spider-Man?! You’ll look like a werewolf (a werewolf is half human, half wolf) with all the hair you’ll need to stick to walls! I think I’ll pass! If I could choose any superpower, I’d choose the ability to teleport! I spoke about this before in a previous episode. The ability to teleport is to be in one place at one moment and then immediately be somewhere else the next moment. If you could be any superhero, which one would you choose?
Leave your answers in the comments section along with your recordings! Learning a new language is like having a superpower as well! Think about all the doors that will open up to you if you can speak another language, especially one as popular as English! Alright, until the next episode, see ya!
