What’s up, VoiceTubers? Leila here. Have you ever seen a child bump themselves a little, and cry until either Mommy or Daddy kisses the spot and makes it all better? Maybe you’ve got kids yourself, or younger siblings, or can remember doing this yourself. That’s a perfect example of something called the placebo effect, and if you’ve never heard of that, I highly recommend checking out today’s video. It explains how this phenomenon, this placebo effect, exists and what research has shown about it.
In the meantime, let's move on to Sentence of the Day:
Even things like getting an injection instead of taking a pill can have a stronger effect, even though they're all medically ineffective. So does that mean our heads can just heal our bodies?

Pronunciation tips:
1. injection KK: /ɪnˋdʒɛkʃən/ IPA: /ɪnˈdʒek.ʃən/
2. ineffective KK: /ɪnəˋfɛktɪv/ IPA: /ˌɪn.ɪˈfek.tɪv/
3. Linking words:

Vocabulary:
injection (n.) KK: /ɪnˋdʒɛkʃən/ IPA: /ɪnˈdʒek.ʃən/
the act of putting a liquid, especially a drug, into a person's body using a needle and a syringe (= small tube)
注射
i.e. I was wondering why these injections had been hurting so much until I found out the nurse had been using the larger needle.
medically (adv.) KK: /ˋmɛdɪklɪ/ IPA: /ˈmed.ɪ.kəl.i/
in a way that is related to the treatment of illness and injuries
i.e. If you always feel down every January or February for seemingly no reason at all, you may have the winter blues, medically known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.
ineffective (adj.) KK: /ɪnəˋfɛktɪv/ IPA: /ˌɪn.ɪˈfek.tɪv/
not producing the effects or results that are wanted
i.e. This small of an air-conditioner will quickly prove ineffective if this room gets too crowded.
I have a friend who used to smoke cigarettes. We’d often hang out in a park, so as a non-smoker myself, the open air helped to dissipate his smoke, and if we were inside, he’d smoke out of a window to be considerate. Still, it’s a smelly habit and deleterious to anyone–everyone’s health when you think about it.
And then one day my friend just stopped. He went from smoking, I don’t know how many packs a day really, (maybe two?) to just zero. I’d never seen anything like it. I’d seen people try to quit before using a variety of methods, but I’d never seen anyone quit cold turkey–and succeed.
I asked my friend at one point how he did it. He said he just decided that he didn’t smoke anymore, not that he couldn’t have or shouldn’t have a smoke, just that he didn’t smoke anymore.
Dang. If the placebo effect is like telling yourself a story that redefines your experience, and my friend can one day make up his mind and tell himself that he doesn’t smoke anymore and change his experience like that, how powerful is this Jedi mind trick stuff? Huh, kinda fun to think about, eh?
So, what about you? What do you think about all this placebo effect stuff? Have you ever just decided to start or stop doing something the way my friend did and have it work out? Let me know in the comments. And as always, hit that record button when you’re ready with your sentence. Catch ya next time.
