Today’s topic is about sleep paralysis(癱瘓). Before we take a look to today’s sentence, let me share my own first experience with sleep paralysis which happened when I was in high school. I was really tired after a long day of class and I have barely gotten any sleep the night before (在那晚之前) because I was up doing my paper. I was too lazy to walk to my room, which was only few steps away. And so I settled down on the couch.

A few moments later, something happened. I was pretty sure that I fell asleep but my brain was completely aware of everything. Wasn’t that the opposite of how sleep should work? And then I could hear things. I could hear my mom and my sister opening the door to see me lying there. They were talking about how I have fallen asleep on the couch and how I slept like a pig.

“I’m not a pig, you’re a pig!” I tried to say to them but I couldn’t. That is when I started to panic. I could listen, I could think but I couldn’t move and talk back. Was I dead? I feel like it.

After several minutes of trying to move, I decided to not fight it. I was so tired. Moments later, I woke up, really woke up. And I was even more tired than I have been before I fell asleep. And guess what? My mom and my sister weren’t even home yet.

After some research, I found out that sleep paralysis is quite common. In fact, half of us have experienced it. Reasons for its occurrence(發生) might include anxiety, jet lag(時差), too much caffeine and so on. If you find yourself in the situation, try to move your fingers, your toes first, you might be able to move them and wake up.
