  • Hi, My name's Bill Petchey.

  • I'm the deputy director of emergency Management here at Martin County Fire Rescue.

  • Since it's hurricane season, I wanted to talk to everyone about the most important aspect of hurricanes as it relates to death in that storm search in Martin County.

  • We have storm surge zones that are established, and I'm going to explain how they work and how the warnings work.

  • We have three zones in Martin County.

  • The red is owns A and B yellow is seeing the end zone.

  • E is the blue, so you can tell by looking at the map zones A and B that would be for the minimal amount of storm surge, but effects our barrier island effect Sewell's point in areas along the river.

  • Both the Southwark and North Fork of the river are affected by storm surge in zone A and B, so that's up to six feet up the six feet of surge.

  • We're gonna evacuate the red, but if we're expecting up to 13 feet of surge, then we have to evacuate the yellow zones cnd.

  • And remember, if you have 13 feet of surge in the yellow, that means the barrier island is under 13 feet of water and yellow has about six feet of water.

  • Now, worst case scenario is if we have to evacuate Sony to get to Zone E, we have to expect a 16 foot or more Sturm storm surge.

  • That means that the barrier island and these parts and redwood could be under 16 feet of water, and then the blue areas could be up to 3 to 6 feet of water.

  • So we say we're getting this much storm surge.

  • That's why we evacuate the zones.

  • We do not evacuate based on wind or category.

  • We only evacuate based on expected storm surge in the National Hurricane Center.

  • In partnership with our National Weather Service, they tell us what to expect as far as the storm surge.

  • And then we evacuate people based on that to find your house in the know exactly what zone you're in, go to www dot martin got f l got us in the search engine.

  • Just put surge zone or storm surge zone.

  • It will bring up the same map you see behind me.

  • Then you can type your address in an old go zoom right down to your house so you'll be able to tell exactly whether you are in red, yellow or blue and then wait for storms.

  • Conditions to be coming down and then we'll advise you usually 24 to 48 hours in advance, to evacuate based on the storm surge.

Hi, My name's Bill Petchey.
