  • woke a don't Because in my house sorry.

  • Right.

  • You heard the voice of one of the rising stars in Hollywood right now from the Netflix series on my block just got renewed for their second season.

  • Okay, man, who got P T s d people telling me secret of disorder since then sitting with me right now, I got a chance to meet him.

  • He came and did one of the first episodes of the new TRL, And we had such a great chemistry is such a great report.

  • I want to adopt him as my little brother.

  • Have good energy.

  • Yeah.

  • Please welcome him to the show.

  • He plays Jamal on my block, but he goes by the name of Bret.

  • Great ladies having me?

  • Absolutely, man.

  • Congratulations.

  • You know, funny.

  • Just sent us off.

  • Mike.

  • My daughter called me the other day because, you know, she see, she assumed the responsibility to keep me hip, because course I could never be cool.

  • So she feeds me all this information in a way.

  • Our artists and you know, so see daddy.

  • Okay, so I got something else for you to watch.

  • Now you really need to be watching on my block, and a lot of adults aren't watching it.

  • And they don't understand that the kids loved this.

  • So they really love.

  • This show is dealing with adolescents who are going through a period of self discovery.

  • They're trying to, you know, really understand who they are.

  • It's placed out of South Central L.

  • A.

  • And it's called on my block.

  • You ever hear about just told her?

  • No, bro, I tell you, I've seen the show.

  • Yeah, soon a show.

  • In fact, I think I might have mentioned it.

  • Maybe I did.

  • When you came on TRL.

  • I really like the role you play.

  • Thank you.

  • You know, because you play a guy.

  • There was always these guys.

  • Maybe DP was this guy.

  • I'm not sure in high school, but, you know, that don't fit the typical stereotype of what you think.

  • A young black man, right?

  • Be like grown up in South Central, you know, and I think you represent a facet of the community that we don't often see.

  • You have a right.

  • Appreciate.

  • Yeah, man, I don't know if that's what you truly are, but at least the character you play.

  • Listen, I like to be mysterious a little bit.

  • Yeah.

  • You know, you know, I'm not really that much like Jamal, but I think when I was 14 I was just like that.

  • Yeah.

  • So, yeah, this first time doing comedy, This my first time doing comedy.

  • Hey, so they seem like it's a naturally funny guy, right?

  • How do I get into it?

  • Like, you know, breaking into the industry is always really hard.

  • And we have a lot of young artists that call appearance of the show trying to get a break.

  • How did you actually get your breaking getting S o?

  • You know what I grew up doing like musical theater.

  • So Ah, when I was in New York City, sort of transitioning into the film world, I would always tell my agents like I wanted to something with people my age.

  • And I want to do something, you know, that speaks to my generation, something that's, you know, prolific and people of color and some like that.

  • So I was in his musical and my agent called me, and she's like, Hey, uh, this is everything you've been asking for, but by the way, is a comedy and I say, Look, I got a smart mouth if I could do comedy.

  • So she sent the first tape and the first tape I sent our executive producers and our showrunner sent me a message back and said, Oh, my gosh, you are the new Chris Tucker.

  • We need you to send us another tape, make these adjustments and then next thing you know, it's lying.

  • L a chemistry read, and then I was bred.

  • Gray ladies, gentlemen, Wow, I like that being that you just said that they give you the compliment of being the next Chris Tucker.

  • That's a lot of that's a huge compliment, right?

  • And for some people, when you say that if you compare somebody to somebody, it's already like a legend in comedy.

  • Did it kind of blow your head up a little Quicken?

  • Did you have to Kind of like, OK, reset.

  • Oh, quite the opposite.

  • I'm the type of person where I don't really like to be compared to people anyway, because everybody has their own sort of lane, and I would rather be the next Brett Gray than the next Chris Tucker or anybody.

  • I don't think I could never do what he does.

  • And, uh, hopefully he could never do what I do.

  • Do you know what I'm saying?

  • So I think if anything, it just revs the pressure of a little bit more to try and live up to something that that people put on me.

  • But, um, it's been more fun than, uh, difficult or or pressurised or anything like that sort of matter, Right?

  • You're 21 right now.

  • Okay.

  • So 21 that's still a super young age.

  • To be able to receive a golden opportunity like this and call the next Chris Tucker.

  • However, you your perspective, maybe on it.

  • Can you talk about some of the stumble?

  • Still, some of the knows some of the doors that closed because a lot of times the you've just believes this is a yellow brick road.

  • That one found that I could never find it.

  • Oh, it is not a yellow brick road.

  • But when I first graduated from high school, I spent four years in New York City just trying to pound the pavements and do the work.

  • And I was in class.

  • I didn't have much money.

  • I was sleeping a McDonald's right on 34th Street, and it's not even there anymore.

  • You mean sleeping there listening.

  • So, like if I missed the mega bus at 11 o'clock, I was sleeping McDonald's until the five o'clock in the morning mega bust the next day because I didn't have money to get the the Amtrak or, you know, any other type of bus.

  • So I definitely was sleeping on my friend's couch is, and I did a lot of I did a whole dorm room tour like all of my friends, and you could do two nights at Pace and two nights.

  • I don't want you in two nights at the new School, So I was spending my weeks with all different people.

  • My friends were feeding me with their meal plan, so it was definitely not a yellow brick road per se, Um, but I'm the type of person where, when I put my mind to it, the hard work is just sort of a part of the journey.

  • What did your parents say?

  • You know what?

  • It's just my mom, but my mom is a superhero.

  • She is like the most supportive person.

  • She will do anything.

  • She will give me her last meal she will give me her last anything that she did that she would, uh, not get the shoes that she wondered or not go to the work functions that she wanted or not get her hair done to do the things that she wanted so that I could get on the mega bus and come up here and do my auditions and stuff like that.

  • So, I mean, I think I just had the foundation already, and she really showed me that.

  • You know, if you make sacrifices, it will pay off.

  • So I never saw the sacrifices as sacrifices.

  • I just saw it as, like the end going a office.

  • Come.

  • How did you deal with rejection?

  • I didn't basically what people told me.

  • No, it wasn't a note.

  • It was a See you later.

  • I must see you again soon.

  • And when we see you the next time, you know I don't have a problem proving myself.

  • Okay?

  • Two people.

  • So you know, a no just means six more months when you see these results on the come back to you.

  • You know what I'm saying?

  • And then I'll get the deal.

  • I want you know, the first thing that they have.

  • More evidence.

  • Exactly.

  • Brad Grey is hanging out.

  • If you watch the new series on Netflix on my block, you know him as Jamal.

  • He's also a singer.

  • He's from Philadelphia, Born and raised outside of Philly.

  • You from?

  • I'm from the north side.

  • We call it uptown on every German town.

  • College?

  • Yeah, well, from there that I would know.

  • Brett Gray?

  • Yeah.

  • All right.

  • All right.

  • Stay coming from my hometown.

  • I want you to know we have a text message conversations, and I'm just always defending myself.

  • So I came ready for you today, Did you really did.

  • Also.

  • Probably a gift you want to see?

  • Let me see what you know.

  • Brett.

  • Great minutes.

  • A perfect cast.

  • I was on TRL I had on these pop and sneakers, and it was the first time I ever seen him everywhere.

  • Pull my ex.

  • Whatever this man's name is.

  • Okay, sweetie, go massage.

  • Bred.

  • Great, man.

  • You wanna talk?

  • What?

  • I made a 7423345 Let him know what you think of his song.

  • What it's like from Philly?

  • Like what?

  • Well, somebody.

  • You should do something with this artist named Sean Smith.

  • I don't know if you're familiar.

  • I'm not familiar.

  • You cook me something, man.

  • Honestly, sickest up becoming.

  • Listen, I want to do something with Jasmine Sullivan.

  • Really, Really wear high school?

  • Yes.

  • Are you in contact with her?

  • I am not in contact with her, but I will be Yes.

  • Listening.

  • And she's singing like that in high school as well.

  • I don't know.

  • But you know what?

  • From what I've heard?

  • Yes.

  • Um, I think she probably has increased her instrument.

  • If you can even increase that, she's She's ridiculous.

  • Um, that girl that could happen.

  • I could see that Brett greatest here.

  • Um, what was your training?

  • My training?

  • YouTube.

  • Uh, my ear.

  • Uh, I didn't really have money for formal training vocally and all that stuff like that.

  • So it's all been sort of what?

  • I've been tried to, you know, as I got older and progress more musical theater, I've honed in on the training that, you know, allows me to do things that I I would like to be able to do on a tour.

  • But, you know, he doesn't remember the self toe I've taught.

  • It doesn't seem like the type.

  • Like you're extremely likeable person.

  • You got a great personality.

  • But you seem like you move silo like you by yourself.

  • I am, Yes, you don't.

  • Very I'm a solo person.

  • And you know what?

  • Sometimes I'm working on now I get overwhelmed with all the things I have to do and all the people to reply to and the people to reach out to And the things I'm doing.

  • I have, ah, campaign called Be easy.

  • Right now.

  • I'm going to all of these schools in Philadelphia, so I just Sometimes I spread myself very thin, and I'm working on focusing on one thing at a time and doing that, executing that to the best of my ability before I move on to the rest of the things.

  • Okay, Now this song old thing back is out today, right?

  • People, men, if you like the song Go out and Purchase Way.

  • Don't want him sleeping on the floor.

  • McConnell's be sleeping with ways House on a living room couch way to me, coming from Philadelphia to do right?

  • How was he influenced your general?

  • Let me talk about it.

  • My first ever inspiration of all time was Will Smith.

  • I defer.

  • That was the first time I saw myself represented.

  • It was the first time Fresh Prince was the goofy or dude that was the skinniest, you know, skinnier guy that was sort of glorified in a way that was also still masculine and cool and fun.

  • And he had music in him.

  • A jazzy Jeff was tearing.

  • The party's up.

  • And I always saw myself as someone like that, you know?

  • So that was my first inspiration of all time.

  • I call him my fake father because no, I said you reminded me of him, and that's why I did a version of it.

  • And what we were talking about Philly.

  • That was my point.

  • Because to me, he is the epitome.

  • He absolutely now on her with that comparison.

  • Other.

  • You know what I'm came to mind to bear when you were talking about how you're self taught when it comes to the musical side, like all of your actual gifts professionally.

  • But now what are your teachings when it comes to the business aspect?

  • Right?

  • So it's like Sway was saying earlier.

  • I feel very so low.

  • So it's been a huge learning curve for me.

  • The business expect of everything just reaching out to people and building connections and networking and and hiring people to be a part of my team.

  • Um, and research.

  • The biggest part for me was doing the research.

  • I have a lot of friends that are in places that I respect that all.

  • I seek advice from them, and I asked them to connect me to their friends, and I asked them, What can I be doing to better myself?

  • What can I be doing that I'm not thinking about to market something or to produce something or publish something?

  • And you know, it's my first musical endeavor s?

  • Oh, uh, the music industry has always intimidated me a little bit because it's, you know very much.

  • If you're in, you're in, and if you're not, it's hard to get in.

  • Yeah, so I've been trying to pave my own way until somebody will open that door for So it's been a huge learning curve.

  • More than anything.

  • Way Got it.

  • Well, this is part of opening that door, right?

  • Sway the morning clean.

  • Brett Gray is here, man.

  • I gotta actually to another guy that you know, was inspired by Will Smale from Philly plays Hakeem Lyon.

  • Yes, great.

  • Similar names.

  • And everybody asks if we're related and I weigh how relations?

  • No, we're not related.

  • Yeah.

  • Great.

  • Yeah, I got you.
