Billie Eilish shocked her fans during her Miami tour stop when she stripped down to
barely nothing in an attempt to tackle body-shaming, and her powerful message was received and
followed by a massive praise.
What’s up guys, it’s Emile Ennis Jr. here with Clevver News, and more now than ever
before, Billie Eilish is using the power of her voice to make a difference.
And I’m not talking about her singing voice (although she does have the voice of an actual
angel).
During the first stop of her Where Do We Go World Tour in Miami last night, Billie took
a few minutes to address the backlash she constantly faces for choosing not to show
off her body, and cover herself in baggy clothing.
In a video posted to social media, Billie is seen removing her top and lowering herself
into a pool of black water, all while facing the critical responses to her trademark style.
Take a look:
While the clip was rolling, Billie can be heard delivering an empowering statement about
body-shaming.
She started out by saying QUOTE, “Some people hate what I wear, some people praise it.
Some people use it to shame others, some people use it to shame me.
But I feel you watching, always.
And nothing I do goes unseen.”
She added, “So while I feel your stares, your disapproval or your sighs of relief,
if I lived by them, I’d never be able to move.
Would you like me to be smaller?
Weaker?
Softer?
Taller?
Would you like me to be quiet?
Do my shoulders provoke you?
Does my chest?
Am I my stomach?
My hips?
The body I was born with, is it not what you wanted?”
In the final statement during the interlude, Billie put the criticism back on society for
making “assumptions about people based on their size.”
She asked, “Is my value based only on your perception?
Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”
Naturally, this entire segment received massive praise from fans during her show, along with
fans who saw the video via social media shortly after.
Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts and express their gratitude for Billie for
kicking her tour off with such an empowering speech.
One user wrote, “The way that billie eilish revealing her body at her own discretion is
going to empower girls to make their own choices ... I have no choice but to stan.”
Another fan accurately compared Billie to the older generation’s Demi Lovato, saying,
“BILLIE EILISH HER BODY SHAMING SPEECH IS EVERYTHING EVERYBODY NEEDS TO HEAR!!!!!!!
I wish I was a teen when she came up she would’ve given me so much strength! luckily my gen
had Demi Lovato for topics like that.”
And it seems like many fans who are struggling with their own issues of body insecurity are
going to be pocketing Billie’s words in times of need, like this fan who said, “body
insecurity?
f*** that i have a video of billie eilish telling me not to make assumptions on body
sizes”
I’m curious to hear your thoughts on Billie’s statement -- do you think this was the perfect
way to kick off her tour and address the constant backlash?
Be sure to get the conversation going down here in the comments!
As we all know, Billie has previously addressed how much backlash she receives, and has even
gone as far to say she feels “very hated recently” at last month’s BRIT Awards.
During an interview with V Magazine back in 2019, Billie also opened up about the way
her baggy style receives just as much backlash as she would if she dressed in more revealing
outfits.
She said QUOTE, “I wear what I want to wear.
But of course, everyone sees it as ‘she’s saying no to being sexualised’ and ‘she’s
saying no to being the stereotypical female.’”
Billie went on to add that even her parents have given her ‘positive’ comments about
the way she dresses that have a slut-shaming element to them, adding, “I can’t overstate
how strongly I do not appreciate that, at all…
I don’t like that there’s this weird new world of supporting me by shaming people that
may not want to dress like me.”
Billie follows a long list of celebs who have addressed the constant scrutiny when it comes
to their bodies, almost as if outsiders think they have full ownership.
Taylor Swift recently addressed her own experiences with an eating disorder during her Netflix
documentary Miss Americana, and revealed that she would starve herself so much that she
felt she was going to pass out by the end of her shows.
Lizzo also has no problem addressing the double standard of showing off her body in a bikini
vs. other celebrities, when TikTok took down one of her videos last week without her consent,
yet everyone else on the platform are able to show off their bodies.
Billie is one of many empowering females who are owning the bodies they’ve been blessed
with, and sharing that with the platform she’s been given.
Her message has already generated thousands of positive responses, and it seems like this
is only the beginning for Billie.
