  • Hey guys! Welcome to our new series!

    哈囉,歡迎來到我們的新系列!

  • This one, we're looking at how to get a British accent.

    今天,我們要來看如何習得英式口音。

  • I say British accent, but really I mean London.

    我說英式口音,但其實是專指倫敦口音。

  • Why London?

    為什麼選倫敦?

  • Because, one, it's my accent, and, two, because, well, let's just say... Harry Potter wasn't from Manchester, and he wouldn't be as cool if he was from Manchester.

    因為,第一,這是我的口音,第二,因為,這麼說好了... 哈利波特不是曼徹斯特人,如果是的話,他就不會那麼酷了。

  • Apologies to any Mancunians!

    曼徹斯特人抱歉了!

  • So, there is a method to these lessons.

    這些課程都有一個學習法。

  • You must follow the correct sequence of lessons to properly understand and use the British accent correctly.

    你得按照課程順序上課,才能理解內容,並正確地使用英式口音。

  • You're ready? Let's go!

    準備好了?開始吧!

  • Today, we're looking at the "Glottal T" and the "True T."

    今天我們要來看喉音 T 及實音 T。

  • What are they?

    它們是誰?

  • Well, I'm sure that you've heard the way that British people pronounce "Water."

    我相信你們聽過英國人唸 water (水) 了。

  • There is a T in the middle, but, usually, not always, but usually, British people don't pronounce the T.

    中間有個 t,但通常,沒有總是,但通常,英國人不會發那個 t 的音。

  • We pronounce it like it's stuck in the throat.

    我們發這個音的方式,就好像它卡在喉嚨。

  • Like this.

    像這樣。

  • Wa'er (water with the glottal T).

    Wa'er (用喉音 T 發 water)。

  • This, it's sometimes represented by an apostrophe.

    有時會用省略符號來表示。

  • It sounds like the middle of Uh-Oh..

    它聽起來就像 uh 跟 oh 的中間。

  • It's stuck in the throat. It's called glottal.

    卡在喉嚨的感覺,叫做喉音。

  • Obviously, not just in water, in other words...

    並不只有 water (水) 而已,像其他字...

  • Bottle can become bo'le (bottle with the glottal T).

    Bottle (瓶子) 會唸作 Bo'le (用喉音 T 發 bottle)。

  • So, the T is there when you spell it, but when you say it, it comes a little like bo'le.

    拼字的時候 t 還是會在,但唸的時候,會變成像 bo'le 的音。

  • Button could be bu'on (button with the Glottal T).

    button (按鈕) 會唸作 bu'on (用喉音 T 發 button)。

  • Other words, like great could become grea' (great with the glottal T).

    其他字,像 great (很好的) 會唸作 grea' (用喉音 T 發 great)。

  • And it's very common to hear this, and it's most common with words which end in T.

    這種發音方式很稀鬆平常,尤其是在字尾為 t 的字。

  • For example : but (bu'), it (i'), that (tha'), not (no').

    舉例來說:but (但是) 發 bu',it (它) 發 i',that (那個) 發 tha',not (不) 發 no' 的音。

  • And all contractions of "not".

    還有所有跟 not 的縮寫。

  • For example : can't (can'), couldn't (couldn'), don't (don'), wouldn't (wouldn'), shouldn't (shouldn'), mustn't (musn').

    舉例來說:can't (不能) 發 can',couldn't (無法) 發 couldn',don't (別) 發 don', wouldn't (不會) 發 wouldn',shouldn't (不該) 發 shouldn',mustn't (絕不) 發 musn' 的音。

  • A common question is: does this sound informal or stupid?

    我常被問,這樣講話會很不正式,或聽起來很蠢?

  • Well, it can if you use it too much.

    這個嘛,過度濫用就會。

  • We don't use the glottal T or the true T every single time.

    我們不會每次都用喉音 t 或實音 t。

  • What sounds more natural is when you have a mix of the two.

    當你混合兩種 t 使用,聽起來會比較自然。

  • For example, in a sentence like : "A little bit."

    舉例,在這個句子「a little bit (一點點)」。

  • You could pronounce both Ts, but it sounds more natural to use a mix.

    兩種 t 都能發,但如果混合使用會比較自然。

  • Like for example: "A li'le bit" (little with the glottal T) or "A li'le bi' "(little and bit with glottal Ts).

    像是,發作 A li'le bit (用喉音 t 發 little) 或是 A li'le bi' (little 跟 bit 都用喉音 t 發)。

  • Could be both glottal Ts.

    可以兩個都發喉音 t。

  • Could be one glottal T and a true T.

    也可以是一個喉音 t 加上一個實音 t。

  • It's up to you, and it sounds more natural to mix things up.

    看你想怎麼發,但混合使用比較自然。

  • But, again, you don't want to use this in every single T in the sentence, because, yes that does sound stupid.

    但,你不會想要句子裡面的每個 t 都這樣發的,因為,聽起來會很蠢。

  • There are some words which you should never use the glottal T, because it always sounds stupid, just because it does.

    有些字永遠不會用喉音 t 發,因為這樣唸聽起來很蠢,就是蠢。

  • For example, like "mountain", we never pronounce it moun'ain (mountain with the glottal T).

    舉例,mountain (山),我們不會唸 moun'ain (用喉音 t 發 mountain)。

  • It sounds horrible.

    聽起來很可怕。

  • Same with "hotel".

    hotel (飯店) 這個字也一樣。

  • No, we never say ho'el (hotel with the glottal T).

    我們不會念 ho'el (用喉音 t 發 hotel)。

  • Never, it's.. it sounds horrible!

    絕不,聽起來太可怕了!

  • So, there is your lesson on the glottal T and the true T.

    好的,這就是喉音 t 與實音 t。

  • Remember, use it as a mix not always glottal T, not always true T.

    記得,混合著使用,不要只用喉音 t 也不用只用實音 t。

  • Have a mix of them together in the sentence.

    在句子裡混著使用。

  • That's how you sound more natural.

    這會讓你聽起來比較自然。

  • Ok, I'll see you in the next class!

    好,下堂課見!

  • "In this word, where is the stress?"

    「這個字 (police) 的重音在哪?」

  • "Well, it's in "-lice".

    「在 -lice 這邊。」

  • "The stress is here".

    「重音在這。」
