  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 103. The noun phrase today is

  • comfort zone. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. If we say someone is in their

  • comfort zone. He or she is in a situation where one feels comfortable and not

  • worried. However this sort of phrase tends to be

  • used more in the negative than it does in the positive. So let's continue here. Yeah.

  • and if someone is not in his or her comfort zone, it means one does not feel

  • safe or at ease. It is often a situation in which you may

  • have to do something one is not yet experienced at or are not comfortable with

  • one's skill level or ability. So that's why you know, you feel like you're not in

  • your comfort zone or something takes you out of your comfort zone. Or yeah. We use...

  • we tend to use it kind of that way. All right. Let's continue/ The original use of this

  • noun phrase referred to a temperature range usually considered to be between

  • 28 and 30 degrees Celsius or about 82 to 86 Fahrenheit in which the naked human

  • body can keep the heat balance without shivering. You know without shaking or

  • sweating. So that, that's the original idea of a comfort zone. So that could

  • still be used today too. What we're mostly covering the other use where especially

  • somebody doesn't feel comfortable. Something or somebody is out of their

  • comfort zone. All right. So we have several examples here. Let's look at

  • example number one. I don't think I should take that promotion if they offer

  • it to me. I will be required to do a lot of presentations and that would take me

  • out of my comfort zone. Yeah. A lot of people are very nervous about giving

  • presentations and stuff. So that might be a reason that he might not want the job.

  • He doesn't want that much pressure. He doesn't want that much stress. Number two. Some people

  • say that you need to step outside your comfort zone in order to challenge

  • yourself. You know, to, in order to improve or advance. You know, you got to go beyond

  • your comfort zone or step outside your comfort zone. So these are other ways

  • that we sometimes use the same noun phrase. All right. Let's look at number three

  • here. That job will require that I speak in English often I am NOT confident with

  • my English ability. It really takes me out of my comfort zone Okay. Anyway I

  • hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time.

  • Bye-bye.
