字幕列表 影片播放 列印英文字幕 Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Proverbs 113. The proverb today is half a loaf is better than none. It's kind of self-explanatory. I mean you know, obviously somebody is telling you well it's better to end up with half because you might lose everything and you might have zero. You might have nothing. So half a loaf is better than none. All right. So let's, let's take a look at the note here. This proverb could also be rephrased as half a loaf is better than no loaf. So you might hear it either way. Half a loaf is better than none or half a loaf is better than no loaf. You know, a loaf meaning like a loaf of bread. So one long piece of bread that's together is a loaf. Okay. Again. Let's continue. This proverb could be found as early as 1546. So it's a very old proverb in John Hayward's collection. Remember we have done a number of proverbs. A number of them came from him. He wrote a collection of Proverbs way back at that time. So this is a really old one ... of proverbs, At that time in history, it used to be a half a loaf is better than no bread. That's the way they used to say it at that time, but it eventually formed into what today we most likely say as a half a loaf is better than none. That's the most common one and you still do here a half a loaf is better than no loaf as well. All right. Let's give a couple of examples here. Example number one. I cannot sell that stock now. I am down 50%. So whatever you invested it in it maybe you already lost 50 percent. So the stock ended up going down. I have to wait until that stock goes up again. Yeah. You hear a lot of people say this. This is another mistake that a lot of people make with stocks. Sometimes they hold on to a loser too long hoping it will go back and then it may even... it may even sink more. So, so be is giving him advice he is saying it is much more likely that company will go bankrupt and the value will go to zero. So you may end up with nothing. Sell now. Half a loaf is better than none. Okay, and number two here. We might... All right. This might be more like a court case with somebody suing. So they're saying that company is only offering half of what we requested to settle out of court. So maybe they're trying to sue somebody. Maybe they ask for I don't know $30,000 or $50,000. The company is willing to offer them half. Settle out of court. We don't go to court. No court fees. Nothing like that. So but maybe the person is not happy. They think they should be able to get the full amount. But B says, I think you should take it. What if you go to court and lose. You know , maybe they got pretty good lawyers. Then you won't get anything. Half a loaf is better than no loaf. So this is exactly how we use it. Okay anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
