  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Verb Phrase 138. The verb phrase today is to dwelll on

  • something or to dwell upon something. Okay. Let's take a look at the note. If

  • someone dwells on something or someone dwells upon something he or she thinks or

  • worries about something in an obsessive way. Almost like they're obsessed/ They

  • can't get it out of their mind in an obsessive way. Okay. Let's look at number

  • two here. To dwell on can also mean to live on a planet. So remember dwell like

  • a dwelling. So we can also have the meaning of living someplace. So if you

  • dwell you can dwell on a planet or or surface.

  • So you can actually live on something. All right. Number three to remain on a subject

  • for a long time. So somebody could be dwelling on a certain sort of a topic or

  • a subject talking about it over and over again many times. Then they dwell on it.

  • All right. Good. So let's look at several examples we have here. To cover all of

  • these meanings. All right. Example number one. You have to stop dwelling on it. And

  • we often tell people this you know, when they're worrying about something too

  • much. If you continue to think about it you are only going to make yourself

  • depressed. Well it's maybe something that making somebody sad. They can't stop

  • talking about it. All right. Number two here. You need to do something to distract

  • your attention and move on. Move on , you know, get past this thing. If you dwell on it,

  • you are going to drive yourself crazy, Yeah. So both these first two examples

  • are the ones where you know, you're almost obsessively thinking about it.

  • Thinking about something too much. This is probably one of the most common uses

  • that we have of it . Because we often say somebody is dwelling on something or

  • dwelling upon something. Let's look at number three. Do you think there are any

  • aliens that dwell on the moon ? All right. Well you could say that or or dwell on

  • Mars or Saturn or any other planet for, for that matter or or anywhere out in

  • space. All right. Let's look at number four

  • here. That journalist mostly likes to dwell on sci-fi topics. So maybe this is

  • what he writes about all the time. He's always dwelling on this. He is always

  • staying on this subject, often because this is what he ... this is his interest. This is

  • what he likes to write about. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you

  • for your time. Bye-bye.
