  • Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Adjective Phrase 18. The adjective phrase

  • today is off-kilter or out of kilter. Okay. Basically they mean the same thing.

  • So let's take a look at the notes here. If something is off kilter , it is not

  • straight, level or lined up correctly. So this is one meaning we have for it. We

  • have a second one here. If something is of kilter or out of kilter it could be

  • in a state of chaos or or confusion. So this is another way something can be off

  • kilter or out of kilter. And number three maybe not working properly or out of

  • order. Okay. So let's let's continue here. The origin of kilter is that it is a

  • variant. Variant means of course you know, word that came from something else, or

  • it's another one used. Just like you know, yeah or yep is a variant of yes. So it's

  • a variant of an older word kilter, which meant order or good condition.

  • Okay. So if someone was off or out of kilter or Kelter from a long time ago, it

  • meant out of order or in bad condition. Okay. So again. Let's let's look at the

  • examples we have here to, to cover this. Example number one. That painting that

  • you hung on the wall is not quite straight. It is slightly off-kilter.

  • You should straighten it out and make it look lined up. Make it look more correct.

  • Number two. The main attraction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is that it is

  • off kilter , but it is still standing. After many centuries. Yeah. People like to

  • go to see it because it's amazing that you have this tower that is leaning and

  • a lot of people like to go there and Italy it's not that far from Florence

  • and most people still pretend like you know they ... from a distance they look they

  • try to look like they're holding it up. So but, but the idea is it is off

  • kilter and that's the main attraction of it. Anyway,

  • let's look at number three. The side effects of that drug my doctor

  • prescribed for me, makes me feel dizzy. It's hard to get around when you feel

  • out of kilter. So again you can use it out of kilter here.

  • Number four. That machine is making funny noises and it is not working smoothly. It

  • is out of kilter and perhaps time to start looking for a new one. Okay. Good. I

  • hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you for your time.

  • Bye-bye.
