Hi this is Tutor P and this is Idioms 234. The idiom today is to fly off
the handle. Okay. Let's look at the note here. If someone flies off the handle he
or she loses one's temper or loses his temper or loses her temper and gets very
angry and goes into an uncontrollable rage.( argh...) Probably something like that. All
right. Let's continue. The origin of this idiom is believed to come from axes that
were made poorly and would detach. And detach means separate from the handle . So
I guess you can imagine, if somebody's using an axe and they go back and then
the metal part flies off and if it hits somebody or almost hit somebody, you can
imagine they would be pretty angry about that. We say maybe that's where it came
from somebody must have got angry from these you know, the , the, the sharp part of the
axe flying off of the ...off of the handle. All right. Anyway , let's take a
look at the examples here. We have here number one. When mom found out that you
didn't come home the whole night , she flew off the handle. What ?
Oh my God she didn't come home ? Are you kidding me ? Something like that. She
probably got really you know, out of control angry. All right number two. When
Dad found it broken, he flew off the handle. Well whatever it is . Maybe it was
important to Dad and he was very , very angry to find that it was just broken. Or
number three here. If you lose your temper and fly off the handle , no one
will want to listen to you. So maybe that this is a person that has a problem that
they often lose their temper. Maybe they have a short temper and they might fly
off the handle very easily. Okay. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear. Thank you
for your time. Bye-bye.
