字幕列表 影片播放 列印英文字幕 Hi this is Tutor Nick P and this is Noun Phrase 58. The noun phrase today is funny farm. Okay. Let's take a look at the note here. A funny farm is a humorous way or a funny way of referring to a mental institution. The origin of the term comes from the idea that funny can also have the meaning of strange or unusual. So the word funny here was not originally meant to mean someone is laughing at people with mental problems because I think sometimes people might take this term the wrong way and think that. They might actually even be offended by it. Instead it came from the expression that someone is funny in the head. If you say someone is funny in the head, it means they're strange in their their thinking is strange. Thus meaning their thinking is strange or unusual. All right, and let's take a look at a couple of examples here. If you keep telling people that you have seen aliens on several occasions they're going to put you in a funny farm. Yeah. People might often say this if somebody you know keeps talking about stuff that seems like crazy. That other people won't believe them. So if you keep talking that way they are going to put you on a funny farm. That's the way we might hear it used. Or number two. He started roaming the streets naked. Yeah. He just walking around without any particular direction and talking gibberish. Meaning basically he's saying a lot of words, but it doesn't make any sense. When people talk a lot but you don't , really can't understand what they're talking about. It's gibberish. They ended up taking him away to a funny farm. Yeah. This one is more serious. This means he really did end up in a mental institution, but sometimes it's said that way. Anyway, I hope you got it. I hope it's clear . Thank you for your time. Bye-bye.
