I do feel that the song is fairly straightforward and that it's a

message to the youth that if an individual finds himself confronted by a

gang that he's better off running away than trying to fight

The very first line, "They told them don't ever come around here" is the

reference to the gang and then you see that the "him" changes to "you" so he's

directly speaking to the audience there, and particularly I think the male

audience members who might be filled with pride in such a situation

They might be thinking things like they want to show how they are

tough

and Michael addresses these different points throughout

The person doesn't want to be defeated

and they want to show that they are strong, and they might even think that

they're on the side of right

However, it's better to run away because

they will kick you and they will beat you

In the context of fight or flight,

pick flight

especially when outnumbered

so this idea is repeated throughout

the idea that it's better to run away

than it is to fight

and in the end Michael Jackson does empathize

because no no one wants to be defeated

and the overall point is that Michael Jackson is trying to help help as many

as many people as possible by letting them know that they shouldn't really trust their

instincts but instead listen to reason and run away
