  • Hey guys, I'm Brittany. So today I'm reviewing the first two episodes of A Series of Unfortunate Events

  • Kind of assuming if you're here you already saw them. There will be some mild spoilers so it's up to you if

  • if you want to stay. So these first two episodes corresponded with the very first book in the series,

  • "A Bad Beginning" and mark this down, because I actually liked the Netflix series more than the first book

  • Like WHAT, I know.

  • Let's start with the script. The same guy who wrote the book series, Daniel Handler, whose pen name is Lemony Snicket

  • He also wrote the screenplays for all 8 episodes, and man oh man, what a difference a great

  • script makes! There were lines take verbatim from the book series and there were times when I thought the script

  • even when above and beyond the book series.

  • One example is when they were showing how intelling Klaus is, the showed him reading a Proust quote

  • and it said "Happiness is beneficial for the body but it is

  • grief that develops the powers of the mind."

  • And I was like "Oh, what an appropriate foreshadowing quote."

  • There were so many Easter eggs and nods to the books in this series, and as fans of the books that's really

  • all we want. Mr. Poe coughs all the time, Violet has her hair ribbon, Violet was skipping rocks at Briney Beach

  • Count Olaf provided them with a complimentary pile of rocks

  • There were just so many details in there, and I loved it!

  • I have to give a shoutout to Mrs.Poe. They really added to her character for this series.

  • And I thought she was great comedic relief.

  • I loved when the Baudelaire orphans are spending the night with them for the first time

  • And she's like "You must feel terrible and miss your parents very much" and they're like "We do..."

  • And she's like "SAY IT" And she makes them say they feel terrible and miss their parents very much

  • So she can quote them in the front page of her newspaper.

  • Shout out to Sunny's baby subtitles, because those were hilarious.

  • Neil Patrick Harris's Count Olaf was dark.

  • Darker than Jim Carey's, and I liked it because Count Olaf is a really dark character.

  • He had some funny lines, but he is clearly a villain.

  • And this reminded me so much of Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog!

  • which was a really big role for Neil Patrick Harris in this like internet video

  • It was actually directed and produced by Joss Whedon

  • It's free online. I'm going to link it down below. If you have not seen Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog

  • You have got to go watch Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog because ah, it's urgent.

  • I have to say Count Olaf was a little bit pervy

  • When he touched Violet's shoulder and stared at Klaus and was like "I touch what I want."

  • Right before he was about to marry - try to marry Violet

  • I was like -uhh- But you know what? He's pervy in the book too.

  • And that was part of my issue - okay so my issue with the book was two things

  • First off, Lemony Snicket as the narrator interrupts constantly without regard for the flow of the story

  • And in the Netflix series I think they corrected that from the start.

  • I think in the book series Daniel Handler's still kind of developing Lemony Snicket's narration and the

  • and the voice he wants him to have, and he does hit a stride, but later on in the series.

  • is when I think it gets to it's best

  • If you can imagine in the Netflix series, just in the middle of an action sequence he just popped up

  • and was like "I'm gonna define a word for you!"

  • And then her defined a word and then went away

  • That's like how he is in the books and it drove me insane.

  • So that's corrected, so that's one reason I think the Netflix series is better whan the first book

  • In the book Lemony Snicket explains things to the readers as if they are truly 8 years old

  • Which, if you want to write a book for 8 year olds, that's great! Go for it!

  • But then there was also some mild sexual vibes towards Violet from Count Olaf and there's the child abuse

  • with Klaus and so I always felt like those things didn't really mix.

  • The book's content was kind of at odds with the babyish narration style

  • And I di think Daniel Handler hits his stride with Lemony Snicket's narration voice a few books into the series

  • but not right away, whereas in the Netflix series

  • I felt like the content was a bit more adult from the beginning

  • I mean, I think tweens could totally enjoy this, I think it would be fine for them, but

  • actual small children, I don't think this series was really meant for.

  • Because there is alcoholism, child abuse, and those sorts of things in this series

  • The biggest surprise for me was seeing the mom and dad at the end of the episode and I was like *GASP*

  • Oh my gosh! So a lot more on that later. I have watched all 8 episodes, so a lot more on that LATER

  • Yessica Haircut! I can't with Yessica Haircut.

  • Okay, so they added a character, Jacqueline, who is Mr. Poe's assistant

  • And from the first two episode you can kind of tell it seems like sh knows who Count Olaf is

  • And she's trying to foil him

  • And might be part of this secret organization, so I really liked that they added that

  • Did you see the first two episodes? Have you read A Bad Beginning? And what did you think?!

  • Thanks so much for watching and my review of episodes 3 and 4 are coming up really soon, Bye!

Hey guys, I'm Brittany. So today I'm reviewing the first two episodes of A Series of Unfortunate Events
