  • Hi I'm Charlie Puth, and this is Closer.

  • I believe you can take old genres of

  • music and take old styles of music and

  • just kinda trick people into what they're used

  • to hearing. If it weren't for my Dad, I wouldn't

  • even know what the genre of R&B is

  • and if it weren't for my mom I wouldn't

  • know what Folky Americana Classical Music... and I

  • brought Jazz music onto myself.

  • I don't know

  • how many piano teachers have slapped my hand

  • for not reading the music. I always hated

  • reading the music cause I always thought it

  • was so much more fun to listen to

  • various recordings of, you know;

  • I can, I can just hear the record and

  • play it back from memory, I guess subconsciously I

  • would change a couple of notes and the teachers

  • would be like, you know;

  • This girl's really pretty

  • I'm going to like that picture. I decide

  • the night before what kind of song I want to hear

  • and I set it as my alarm so I'm

  • like pleasantly surprised and then I light this thing

  • which is Sandalwood and do this movement, clear

  • the bad energy, I throw on my Gucci

  • flip flops, kind of start the day just

  • based off of that. Let's go, to the

  • studio, first step, turn on the MIDI keyboard,

  • cool lamps, cool vibes, candles are usually lit

  • but I'm not feeling it today, I don't

  • want to light any candles today.

  • This is literally where everything is made, I had started

  • Attention, I was on a train to Tokyo,

  • it just came to me that I wanted

  • to like write an orchestral piece like with

  • pizzicato strings, like;

  • and I heard all of these

  • chord changes and like this lush orchestra playing

  • so I started, I took out contact or

  • something and just started layering strings, so I

  • got back to the hotel and I replaced

  • the *string sounds*, with a guitar and I

  • took my phone out and recorded an E flat, B Flat,

  • E Flat, B Flat, F Sharp, F, E Flat, B Flat, D Flat,

  • A Flat, D Flat, E Flat, F. Every song I produce

  • I add my beat box. *beatboxes*

  • All my music it's Really exciting right now

  • in my life because it's all starting to,

  • kind of like come together, it's all starting

  • to sound like a vibe where I'm super

  • proud of, of the um, the old stuff

  • but it was really me figuring out like

  • where I wanted to go musically.

  • World exclusive.

  • *music plays*

  • That was stupid.

  • Jazz chords.

  • I have to picture

  • the music video in my head while I'm

  • making it so when I'm making this

  • song and I'm hearing the post chords,

  • I'm picturing people like at a salsa bar

  • like dancing like you know, guy twirling a

  • girl around or whatever, I can't dance for s***,

  • but you know what I mean. I think

  • I order a shake every morning, I actually

  • workout you mentioned Adele before, I saw her working

  • out at the gym one time which was

  • pretty cool, I like working out, working out

  • with Adele. I need a haircut so badly,

  • this is unacceptable.

  • One way I can use this

  • app on my phone which is why I'm

  • calling my album VoiceNotes, is cause

  • every song was made with the Voice Notes app.

  • I'll do that and just have fun

  • with it.

  • *music plays*

  • I don't know how well you can hear

  • that but it's just like feels like I'm

  • playing with a band, and I'm the band

  • so I can control, um I can control

  • everything which is super fun for me, I get

  • excited just thinking about it. It's very crazy

  • and I have 8 million subscribers, I forget that I'm

  • like one of the bigger YouTubers. Youtube is the reason

  • why I have confidence to perform on stage

  • because before YouTube I didn't, I had no, you

  • know basis to perform in front of people,

  • I didn't want to because I was too afraid,

  • and YouTube gave me you know, having

  • growing a fan base on YouTube gave me

  • the confidence to, go on stage.

  • I'm really bad at writing out music notes so

  • I actually just write the letters out and

  • I have perfect pitch so I know that,

  • this is an F sharp.

  • Yeah like, you can't

  • deny that this sounds like so good

  • because it does and it's all from these

  • notes here.

  • *music plays*

  • Ohh, it's so like, just the

  • *sings melody*

  • I want everybody to

  • in places that I can't like go to

  • overnight, music can reach them immediately, it's universal

  • in a way that's not just specific to

  • one region. Australia has been waiting for me

  • to go to Australia for a long time

  • but every time I get ready to go

  • something happens where it has to get

  • like postponed a month, and then it gets

  • postponed another month like when I go to

  • Australia it's going to be a party, I'm going

  • to like, oh I'm going to have so

  • much fun, when I go to Australia.

  • I love like working with hip-hop producers

  • like Mike Will, just cause there's no like, there's no formula

  • it's all just based on feeling and when you

  • work with guys who are making music based

  • on what they're feeling it's usually, it's just

  • like, the music feels better it doesn't feel

  • so contrived.

  • Where do I see myself in

  • 10 years? Hopefully just as happy and motivated

  • as I am right now and not jaded by

  • any success. I want to make a boy

  • band, I want to like produce a record

  • for like a boy band, like I want to

  • put them together and like, just see them

  • just dominate the world. That would be super cool.
