- Words are like seeds.
When you speak something out,
you give life to what you're saying.
When you're in peace, it's a position of power,
and when you stay in peace, God will get you
to where you're supposed to be.
I refuse to be mediocre
because people around me are mediocre.
What follows the word I am,
I believe you're inviting into your life.
The loan didn't go through?
(audience applauding)
You didn't qualify for that new house?
Try again.
But I'm good about getting up every day
and searchin' my own heart,
and sayin', am I on the right track?
You won't live a victorious life
if you're always reliving what didn't work out,
who hurt you, the mistakes you've made.
We try to make Christianity, faith, relevant and practical.
Anybody can give up.
Anybody can let it overwhelm you.
But you know what that's doin'?
Wasting your pain.
Some of my enemies, I feel like I need to write them
a check, if they hadn't have been against me,
I wouldn't have prayed so hard.
(whooshing)
- He's an American preacher, televangelist, and author.
He's a senior pastor at Lakewood Church,
the largest protestant church in America.
He has written seven New York Times best selling books.
He's Joel Osteen, and here's my take
on his top ten rules for success.
(whooshing)
- You are where you are today
in part because of what you've been saying
about yourself.
Words are like seeds, when you speak something out
you give life to what you're saying.
If you continue to say it,
eventually that can became a reality.
Whether you realize it or not,
you are prophesying your future.
And this is great when we're saying things like,
I'm blessed, I'm strong, I will accomplish my dreams,
I'm comin' out of debt.
That's not just bein' positive,
you are prophesying victory, prophesying success,
prophesying new levels.
And your life will move in the direction of your words.
But too many people go around prophesying
just the opposite.
I never get any good breaks, I'll never get back in shape,
business is slow, I'll probably get laid off,
'flu season is here, I always get it.
They don't realize they are prophesying defeat.
It's just like they're callin' in bad breaks,
mediocrity, lack.
And the Scripture says, we will eat the fruit of our words.
You are planting seeds when you talk,
at some point you're going to eat that fruit.
My challenge is make sure you're playing
the right kind of seeds.
If you want apples, you have to sow apple seeds.
If you want oranges, you can't plant cactus seeds,
poison ivy seeds, mushroom seeds.
You're going to reap fruit from the exact seeds
that you've been sowing.
In other words, you can't talk negative
and expect to live a positive life.
You can't talk defeat, and expect to have victory.
You can't talk lack, not enough, can't afford it,
never get ahead, and expect to have abundance.
If you a poor mouth, you're going to have a poor life.
If you don't like what you're seeing,
start sowing some different seeds.
- Isn't it true that when you look at your life
as everything is there to try to raise you
to the next level, - That's right.
- That things...
- Yeah, you can handle it so much better
when you're in the difficult times
knowin' that somehow it's going to work for your good.
Because otherwise, you're always fighting something,
you know, (muffled speaking),
wow, I'm fighting, I got to get out of this job,
or I don't like this marriage.
You know, if we don't watch it,
we'll go through life fighting.
When you realize that God's in control,
nothing's happening to me, it's happening for me,
God's directing my steps,
so even though I'm in a difficult time,
I'm going to be in peace today.
I'm going to be good to somebody (audience applauding)
because, I know this,
you stay, you know, when you're in peace,
it's a position of power, and when you stay in peace
God will get you to where you're supposed to be.
Listen, God will move the wrong people out of the way,
he'll open up the right doors.
(audience applauding)
He's in control of our lives.
Don't let your mind become conditioned for mediocrity.
Don't let that change who you really are.
Sometimes, people will try to put us in a box
and tell us thing like, you can't start that business,
you don't have the resources.
You'll never afford a nice place to live,
never get well, never meet the right person.
Because their thinking is limited,
they'll try to put their limitations on you.
You have to put your foot down and say,
I refuse to be mediocre
because people around me are mediocre.
(audience applauding)
I refuse to be addicted, depressed, have low expectations,
I know I'm a barrier breaker.
I'm going to set a new standard.
It starts in our thinking.
Nothing will change until you make up your mind
you are not going to accept mediocrity.
What follows the word I am,
I believe you're inviting into your life.
So I think a lot of people don't realize it,
but playing in their mind, and even sometimes we say it,
you know what, I am slow.
I am unlucky.
I am, you know, not attractive.
And I think we're inviting negative things in.
I think we're supposed to say, you know what?
I'm blessed.
I'm strong, I'm healthy, I'm talented.
Think you have to invite the right things into your life.
A man in the lobby told me the other day
how he had a dream to start his own business,
and he got it goin', everything was fine,
he was so excited.
But he hit a series of setbacks,
unfortunately it didn't make it.
He thought he was done, that it would never happen.
No, it just wasn't the right time.
Don't give up on what God promised you.
Don't let that dream die stillborn.
It may not have happened in the past,
but you've come into a set time.
God has favor waiting for you,
ideas waiting for you, the right people waiting for you.
Try it again.
The Scripture says, a good man falls seven times,
but the Lord raises him back up.
(audience cheering) (audience applauding)
The loan didn't go through?
You didn't qualify for that new house?
Try again.
You're in a set time of favor.
You tried to lose the weight, tried to get back in shape,
it didn't work out.
Try it again.
- How do you deal with temptation?
And don't say it doesn't come to you.
(laughing)
- Well, it comes to every person,
but you know, just what I teach.
You get up every day and you say, God help me
to honor you in my thoughts and in my life,
and you just, you know,
it's just, I think it's a part of discipline.
I think it's a part of staying grounded,
and you know, one thing I've been good at,
'cause there have been a lot of ministers like me.
And you know 'em all (chuckles).
That haven't made it long term.
But I'm good about getting up every day
and searchin' my own heart,
and sayin' am I on the right track?
And I, too, I think about temptation.
I realize, you know, you come down a lot faster
than you went up, and we've seen all that.
So, I just think it comes from keepin'
your own heart pure.
We all have had negative things happen to us.
People did us wrong, the company laid us off,
a clerk was rude to us.
It's easy to go through life offended,
in self pity, blamin' others, blamin' ourselves,
even blaming God.
And because we're always lookin' back,
reliving the negative, we end up carrying around all this
baggage that weighs us down.
One of the best things we can learn to do is drop it.
Let it go.
Whether it happened 20 years ago,
or 20 minutes ago, don't carry negative baggage
from yesterday into today.
You won't live a victorious life
if you're always reliving what didn't work out,
who hurt you, the mistakes you've made.
The reason it's called the past is because it's over.
It's done, it's history.
Now do your part and let it go.
Well, Joel, they betrayed me, they walked away,
broke my heart, that's why I'm bitter.
That's why I'm upset.
Oh, they hurt you once, don't let them continue to hurt you
by always thinkin' about it. (audience applauding)
As long as you're dwellin' on that,
it's going to keep you from the new things
God wants to do.
- You church and your ministry, obviously, is growing.
You're attracting more people, you're in an old basketball
arena which is now a church.
What is Lakewood Church doing right
that other churches are doing wrong?
- You know, I don't know, you know.
I think that one thing we do,
and it's not just our church,
but we try to make Christianity, faith, relevant
and practical.
I think another part of it is it is positive.
I mean, there's a lot of things beating people down already,
I mean, I've found most people already
feel guilty enough.
They already know what they're doin' wrong.
Not everybody, but most.
So, you know, I think when you're,
our message is, I try to make it practical, relevant,
how do I forgive?
How do I have a good attitude?
How do I reach my destiny?
And so, I think, you know, if there's sometimes
when we don't change, and it's just all doctrine,
and it's just, I'm going to be beat down,
I'm going to feel guilty.
I think that's maybe what pulls some people away.
The key is what we do in our times of pain.
Pain will change us.
Heartache, loss, disappointments,
they don't leave us the same.
When I lost my father, I didn't come out
like I was before, I was changed.
If you go through a divorce, a legal battle,
a friend betrays ya, eventually that will pass.
You'll get through it, but you will be different.
Now, how the pain changes you is up to you.
You can come out bitter, or you can come out better.
You can come out with a chip on your shoulder,
blamin' God, or you can come out stronger
with a greater confidence in God.
You can come out defeated, giving up on your dreams,
or you can come out with a new passion, a new fire.
Excited about the new opportunities in front of you.
All of us experience pain.
My challenge, don't just go through it, grow through it.
That difficulty is an opportunity to get stronger.
To develop character, to gain new confidence.
Anybody can give up.
Anybody can let it overwhelm you,
but you know what that's doing?
Wasting your pain.
That pain is not there to stop you,
it's there to prepare you, to increase you, to develop you.
(audience applauding)
In 2002, we received word that the Houston Rockets
Basketball Team was moving out of this building,
and the city was thinkin' about selling it.
We needed a larger auditorium.
When I heard that, something came alive on the inside.
I knew it was supposed to be ours.
When word got out in the city
that we were interested in it,
there was all kinds of debate as to what should happen
to this building.
And a friend of mine was at a business luncheon
sitting with some high powered executives.
One of these executives, a very influential man,
found out that my friend attends Lakewood,
and he started talkin' about the Compact Center,
and about how against us he was.
About what a terrible thing this would be for the city.
How no church should ever have this building, on and on.
Some other people at the table joined in,
kind of laughin', makin' fun.
Talked about how Lakewood didn't have a chance
in the world to get it.
Finally, this executive looked at my friend
and said very sarcastically, it will be a cold day in Hell
before Lakewood ever gets that building.
(audience laughing)
My friend called me afterward and told me
about the conversation, said thanks a lot for the good news,
appreciate that encouragement.
(audience laughing)
But the truth is, that conversation was ordained
by the creator.
- [Audience Member] Amen.
- He was one of those Goliaths God had strategically placed
in our path.
And when I heard about how against us he was,
I was already determined, but somethin' rose up in me.
I had a holy determination. (audience cheering)
(audience applauding) I had a new fire,
a new resolve, and every time things got tough,
looked like it wasn't going to work out,
I would be tempted to get discouraged,
I could hear that phrase, a cold day in Hell.
(audience laughing)
I'd get my passion right back,
wouldn't tame me five seconds. (audience cheering)
Sometimes, God will put an enemy in your life
to keep you stirred up.
He'll allow critic, doubters, discouragers,
even some haters, so when you feel tired
and think you want to give up, you'll keep pressing forward
shakin' it off.
Not because you feel like it,
but because you don't want to give you enemies the joy
of seeing you defeated.
(audience applauding)
Not out of spite, not out of pride,
it's a holy determination.
God uses the negative to keep us stirred up.
And that business leader that was so against us,
he doesn't realize it, but God used him
more than he used my friends.
He was one of the most instrumental people
in us getting this building.
And a funny thing is, he wasn't for us, he was against us.
God used our enemies to bless us.
If I ever see that man, I need to buy him dinner.
(audience laughing)
McDonald's, probably.
(audience laughing)
Some of my enemies I feel like I need to write them a check.
If they hadn't have been against me,
I wouldn't have prayed so hard.
(audience cheering)
If they hadn't have made fun, I would've given up sooner.
(audience applauding)
If they hadn't have told me I couldn't do it,
didn't have what it takes,
I might've been complacent, settled where I was.
It was their opposition that pushed me forward.
Many times God will use your enemies to catapult
you to success more than your friends.
David said, God prepares a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
Know this, when God brings you through the opposition,
he's not going to do it in private.
He's going to do it where all of those enemies can see it.
(audience applauding)
This building is located on the second busiest freeway
in the nation.
You can't drive in this city very long
without seein' what God has done.
And that man that was against us,
I can only imagine every time he passes by,
(audience laughing)
somethin' whispers in his ear, (audience cheering)
it must be a cold day in Hell, because there they are.
(whooshing)
- Thank you so much for watching,
I made this video because Pagla Bye asked me to.
So if there's a famous entrepreneur you want me to profile
next, leave it in the comments below
and I'll see what I can do.
I'd also love to know which of Joel's top 10 rules
had the biggest impact on you and why,
leave it down in the comments,
and I'll join the discussion.
Thank you so much for watching, continue to believe,
and I'll see ya soon.
(whooshing)
- Maybe you've gone through a disappointment,
a bad break, don't pray, God help me to deal with this
loneliness, God help me to put up with this depression,
that's a slave mentality.
Turn it around, God you said you would give me beauty
for these ashes, joy for this mourning,
that you would pay me pack double for this
unfair situation. (audience applauding)
Or your dream may look impossible.
You don't see how it could work out.
God you said your blessings would chase me down,
that I'm surrounded by favor, that goodness and mercy
are followin' me, that you would give me
the desires of my heart.
Take the limits off of God, and ask big.
Not from a slave mentality, not a limited mindset,
don't ask God to help you function better
in your dysfunction, ask him for your dreams.
Ask him for new levels.
As him for explosive blessings.
Ask him to propel you into your purpose.
I don't think it's about, money has never been our goal.
I never knew I was going to write a book
that sold millions and millions of copies,
and so I don't take a salary from the church now,
but it's about, you know, money is simply a tool
to fulfill your destiny.
But I teach people--
- Do you give money away?
Do you help? - Always.
We give millions of dollars.
And Victorianette and I have never dreamed
that we'd be able to do, to be able to bless people
like this, so it's never been about, you know,
how wealthy can we become.
Life has a way of pushin' our dreams down.
They can become buried under discouragement,
buried under past mistakes.
There are dreams buried under divorce,
buried under low self esteem.
It's easy to settle for mediocrity
even though we have all this potential
buried on the inside.
But just because you gave up, doesn't mean God gave up.
Your dream may be buried,
the good news is, it's still alive.
It's not too late to see it come to pass.
And we've all been through disappointments and setbacks,
and life happens.
But instead of remembering the hurt, the pain,
what didn't work out, the key to reachin' your destiny
is you have to remember your dream.
Remember what God promised you.
Remember what he whispered to ya
in the middle of the night.
The Scripture calls it the secret petitions of our heart.
Things you haven't told anybody about.
It may seem impossible, every voice tells ya
it's not going to happen.
You've been pushin' it down,
but God is sayin', what I promised you,
I'm still going to do.
(audience applauding) (audience cheering)
I spoke it to ya, it may not have happened yet,
but I am true to my word, it is on the way.
If you do your part and start believin' again,
get your passion back, God is going to resurrect
what you thought was dead.
Dreams that you've given up on,
you tried, it didn't worked out,
it's been so long, they're going to suddenly come
back to life.
Problems that looked permanent
going to suddenly turn around.
What should've taken years,
God's going to do in a fraction of the time.
He hasn't changed his mind, he has the final say.
(audience cheering)
Now don't let circumstances talk ya out of it,
you may not understand why a business didn't make it,
why a person walked away,
why you came down with an illness,
you were doin' the right thing,
but the wrong thing happened.
It's all a part of the process.
Every disappointment, every delay, every closed door,
it's not just a setback, it's a set up
for God to get you to where you're supposed to be.
(audience applauding)
And it may be takin' a long time,
it may look impossible, all it takes is one touch
of God's favor.
What are you remembering?
The hurt?
The pain?
What didn't work out?
Turn it around and remember your dream.
