I'm so excited. Oh my gosh, I can't wait until this comes out. (knocking on wood) - What's in the box? - Oh, there he is! - (happily) Eddie Redmayne. - (goblin) So you're the guy with the case full of monsters, huh? - (man) News travels fast. ♪ (thrilling music) ♪ - Yeah, off the bat, I have no idea what this is. - (woman) Mr. Scamander, do you know anything about the wizarding community in America? - It's wizards in America! (creature croaks) - Is that a platypus? That's legit. - (man) Hey! Mr. English Guy! I think your egg is hatching. - "Think your egg is hatching." - Oh shoot! - (woman) You wiped his memory, right? They're No-Magic. - (Scamander) They're what? - (woman) No-Magic. They're non-wizards! - (Scamander) Sorry, we call them Muggles. - "No-Maj." "You mean the Muggle." - (man) I don't think I'm dreaming. - (Scamander) What gave it away? - (man) I ain't got the brains to make this up. (creature roaring) - This is amazing. - Pretty sure this is J.K. Rowling's screenwriting debut. - (man) Who does this protect? Us? (guns cock) Or them? - I'm so happy to return back to the wizarding world of Harry Potter. - (man) Or them? ♪ (music builds up) ♪ - Oh my gosh. - ♪ Oh my gosh ♪ - (excitedly) "This November." - (woman) This is related to Grindelwald's attacks in Europe. This could mean war. - "A new era of magic begins." So is this gonna become like a thing? - (man) We got a plan. Right, guys? - (Scamander) They need our help. ♪ (music escalating) ♪ - (woman) Was that everything that came out of the case? - (giggling excitedly) - I'm getting chills. I'm getting chills. - (astonished) Oh my god. - Wow. - It's like the magic apocalypse. - Graphics in this are amazing. - Dang. This looks legit. - (man) Time is running out. - (whispers) Oh my gosh. When is Voldemort gonna come out? ♪ (dramatic music) ♪ ♪ (brash music) ♪ - Okay, what is this? - ♪ (humming along to Harry Potter theme) ♪ - ♪ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them ♪ ♪ I'm so excited ♪ - It looks cool, but I have no idea. Is this from a book? - Oh my gosh, I'm so excited. I cannot wait. - I have so much excitement for this movie, because I grew up reading Harry Potter. I just hope that this does not screw it up. ♪ (industrial music) ♪ - (FBE) Okay, so that was the trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them... - I know. I'm so happy. - (FBE) ...the latest movie from J.K. Rowling. What movie universe does this take place in? - Well, I would think in the Harry Potter universe. - Same place where Harry Potter comes from? - The wizarding world in America. - Harry Potter universe. I'm pretty sure it's like 70 years before Harry Potter, in New York. So I'm pretty pumped about it. One, because I love New York. Two, 'cause Harry Potter's pretty dope. - (FBE) So this movie takes place in the Harry Potter universe. - Really? - No way. - Is there Hogwarts there? - (FBE) How does this trailer make the movie look? - It makes it looks super cool. There's a lot of different stuff going on, so I was sort of like, "What's happening?" - Action-packed. There was a lot of fantasy, a lot of magic going on. - It makes it look very action-packed. Like, there's a lot of big stuff always attacking them. - It looks like you're living in a realistic setting. But the element of fantasy is still there. - (FBE) So this movie is based on a book that J.K. Rowling wrote in 2001 years before she even finished Harry Potter. - Dang. - I thought this was something that she came up with, like, just after Harry Potter. - (FBE) So did you read that book? - I haven't even heard of it. - No, I did not. - I did not read that one. - I've trotted along to the bookstore with my parents and bought it. Still have it. Just reread it. - A lot of people are like, "Oh yeah, blah blah. I've read all her books." I'm like, "You haven't read Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." They're like, "Wait, there's another book?" "Yeah, that book was written before she even finished the rest of Harry Potter. How did you not know that?" - (FBE) So the source material didn't actually have a real narrative. It was written as if you were buying the real textbook from a class Harry Potter and his friends were taking. - That is so cool! - That's like a cool way to keep your readers interested. You know, it's like thinking outside of the box. - (FBE) And then J.K. essentially came up with the story and wrote this movie, and it's actually the first movie that she's written. - Oh, that's really cool! - So she wrote the screenplay for it then and the book itself. Wow. That's really cool. - (FBE) So do you think having the freedom to write a brand-new script instead of basing it off an existing book is better or worse for the audience? - Probably better. There is no comparison, so there's probably less room for negative feedback. - It's better for an audience, because there's not prejudgment of what the book was compared to the movie. - It's almost better, because she has the freedom to sort of make it exactly how she has envisioned it. - A lot of people get mad when they see a book made into a movie. But because it was a textbook, they can't have that comparison. So they aren't gonna get let down. - (FBE) Harry Potter is one of the biggest franchises ever. Can you talk about your own memories and fandom or lack thereof of Harry Potter from when you were a kid to now, being an adult? - Well, because of my hair, I got Hermione a lot. - My first memory of Harry Potter was my mom used to read the first book to me before I'd go to bed. - Saw Harry Potter, and we actually became magicians. We're members of the Magic Castle now. Like, we actually do magic because of Harry Potter. - I remember being really scared of the first one. I had to convince my mom to let me watch it, and then I hated it. - There was one blanket at my house that I had. I used to always walk around with it like I had an invisibility cloak. It would never work, because my mom would always be like, "I can see you." I still, like, am a die-hard fan of Harry Potter. - I'm gonna start crying. To a little kid, like, a 200-page book is like a feat. And I remember finishing it in the second grade and being like, "Oh my god, give me the next one." As an only child, for me, having that community and having Ron, Harry, and Hermione as my friends, like, that was so cool and so meaningful. I love Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter so much. - (FBE) Well, the last movie in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, was released over five years ago now. - Oh my gosh. - I feel that it was just like yesterday. - (FBE) So do you think that, with all the time in between that film and this film, that overall the fans of Harry Potter have cooled off? - I feel like they have cooled off. Everyone was inspired by Harry Potter, but all these new things started coming through. - They've kinda started to breathe slightly until she was like, "Yeah, I'm gonna release a book now." Everyone's like, "(deep sigh) Why did you do this to me?" - I think it's grown. I don't think it's cooled off. - Not at all. There was just a Harry Potter convention last month. - No. Oh my gosh, that's why Harry Potter World at Universal's blowing up. - I personally don't think so. They're finding ways to just keep people interested in it, even if it doesn't have a new movie coming out. - [Bleep] no. [Bleep] no. Hell no. Goddamn no. We have no chill. - (FBE) So finally, when this movie does come out, are you gonna be first in line, waiting till the lines die down, or are you gonna be passing on it completely? - Probably waiting till the lines die down. - I'd be a neutral way, the lines die down. - The lines die down, we're gonna definitely go watch it when the lines die down. - Wait until the line has died down before I go the theater and see it. Or I'll just wait for it to come on the TV. - I'll probably wait till the lines die down. - I'd rather be in a theater with a few other scattered people so that my movie experience isn't as interrupted. - I'm not gonna pass on it, but I don't think I'll be first in line either. - Not the first in line, but probably the 10th or 11th. - I really want to be first in line, but I have school. I'm gonna try and see it as soon as I can. - I'm first in line. I bought my ticket a week ago. I'm ready.
