  • Why is my life the way it is?

    為何我的生命是以如此的樣貌呈現?

  • This world it is the way it is because we are the way we are.

    世界是如此,因為我們也是如此

  • And we are the way we are because there is Karma

    我們會是如此是因為「業」

  • Karma Bond to the Past and Future

    「業」-- 聯繫前世與來生

  • (Sound of birds chirping, bells ringing, and a dog barking)

    (鳥叫聲,鐘聲,狗吠聲)

  • Every morning we wake up to a new day.

    每天早晨,我們在新的一天中醒來

  • but every morning we also wake up to our old life.

    但每天早晨,我們也從過去的人生中醒來

  • To the life that we have created.

    在我們已創造的人生中醒來

  • (forest sounds as the monk walks through it)

    (和尚經過時,林間發出了簌簌聲)

  • Last week.

    上週

  • Last year

    去年

  • Last life

    前世

  • This is our Karma.

    這是我們的「業」

  • We cannot escape it.

    我們無法從中掙脫

  • Karma Our Life

    「業」 -- 我們的一生

  • (Chanting)

    (誦經聲)

  • Karma is a sanscrit word. It means "action".

    Karma 「業」是梵語中的一個字。它的意思是「行動」

  • We can easily see some of our Karma.

    我們可以輕易地預見自身「業」的一部分

  • Let's just think what we did.

    只要想想我們曾經做過的事情

  • Yesterday.

    昨天

  • Last year.

    去年

  • In our childhood.

    孩提時期

  • Or in our last life.

    或是我們前世的所作所為

  • If we can remember that.

    如果我們有記憶

  • What ever we did, this is our Karma.

    我們曾經所做的一切,就是我們的「業」

  • This has become our life.

    這成為我們的生命

  • Now.

    也就是現世

  • Karma Whatever we did.

    「業」 -- 我們所作為的一切

  • The Buddhist says "Life is about suffering".

    佛家說:「人生是磨難。」

  • Very often we create suffering.

    經常,我們創造了苦難

  • For ourselves

    為我們自己,

  • or for others. We know that.

    或是為他人。我們深知這件事。

  • We say bad things.

    我們造口業

  • We're impatient.

    沒耐心

  • We hurt.

    做傷害的事

  • Karma We create suffering.

    「業」 -- 我們創造苦難

  • We do create suffering around us.

    我們確實創造了身邊的苦難

  • This means we fill our own world with suffering.

    這表示苦難遍佈在我們的世界

  • How can we expect to find anything else in this world

    除了苦難,

  • other than suffering?

    我們還能在世上找到其他的東西嗎?

  • We will find exactly what we had previously provided.

    我們所能找到的正好是之前我們所做的一切

  • We can create our own hell,

    我們能創造自己的地獄

  • but we can just as well create heaven.

    但我們也能夠創造天堂

  • Karma Heaven or hell.

    「業」 -- 天堂或地獄

  • (People talking, market and traffic sounds)

    (談話聲,市場和馬路上的聲音)

  • Wherever we look in this universe,

    從任何地方看這個宇宙

  • there is cause and effect.

    都有因果

  • Nothing ever happens out of thin air.

    沒有事物是無中生有

  • This law of cause and effect also applies

    因果法則也可以

  • to our destiny.

    應用在我們的命運上

  • To the way our life evolves.

    應用在我們逐漸成形的人生上

  • Whatever we do, whatever we even think

    無論我們做了什麼,甚至想了什麼

  • will have some effect on our life.

    即使只是微不足道的小事

  • Even if just a tiny little bit.

    對我們人生都有某些影響

  • Our thoughts and feelings

    我們的思想和感覺

  • form the world within us.

    形成我們內在的世界

  • Our words and actions

    我們的言語和行動

  • form the world around us.

    形成我們外在的世界

  • We are constantly shaping our world.

    我們持續塑造我們的世界

  • And we are shaping our life, little by little.

    漸漸地,也塑造了我們的人生

  • Because for every cause,

    這是因為只要有因

  • there must be an effect.

    就必有果

  • Karma Cause and effect

    「業」 -- 因與果

  • (Birds chirping)

    (鳥叫聲)

  • Whatever we do or think

    不論我們做什麼或想什麼

  • shapes our world, a tiny little bit.

    都塑造了我們的世界,即便是丁點小事

  • Be towards greed and anger

    是要貪婪與憤怒

  • or be it towards love and kindness.

    還是要愛與良善

  • We can increase suffering in our world

    我們可以增加我們的苦難

  • or we can prevent suffering.

    我們也可以避免苦難

  • It is up to us.

    這取決於我們自己

  • Karma We shape our world.

    「業」-- 塑造自身的世界

  • So our actions directly affect our world.

    我們的行為直接影響我們的世界

  • Our own as well as other people's world.

    也影響了他人的世界

  • Because from a Buddhist perspective all is one.

    因為從佛家的觀點來看,萬物合一

  • Nothing is separate. All is connected.

    沒有事物是不相干的。一切皆緊緊相扣。

  • We are all connected.

    我們都是密不可分的

  • Our own future and the future of others.

    我們的未來和他人的未來

  • They interact like cogwheels in a clock.

    就像時鐘內的齒輪一樣相互作用

  • They are one.

    它們是一體

  • Karma All is one

    「業」 -- 萬物合一

  • (Birds continue chirping. Piano sound)

    (不停的鳥叫聲,鋼琴聲)

  • Let's see our life as a garden.

    我們可以將人生看成一座花園

  • If we take good care of it,

    如果我們細心照料

  • it can be beautiful.

    花園將是美麗的

  • Obviously, this will take time and effort.

    很明顯地,這需要時間和努力

  • (water sound)

    (水聲)

  • And obviously there are a lot of things in our garden

    明白說來,花園裡有許多事物

  • beyond our control.

    是我們無法掌控的

  • The weather,

    像是天氣

  • the seasons or maybe some other people

    季節或甚至是其他的人

  • whose intentions are different from ours.

    他們跟我們有不同的目的

  • But, after all, we are the gardener.

    但畢竟,我們都是園丁

  • We will determine what our garden

    我們將決定我們的花園

  • will finely look like.

    最後會以什麼樣貌呈現

  • Karma Time and effort

    「業」 -- 時間和努力

  • (Birds chirping and men chanting)

    (鳥叫聲,誦經聲)

  • Our present life is created by our Karma

    我們的現世來自於我們的「業」

  • We cannot escape it.

    我們無法掙脫

  • Since we have created suffering in the past,

    因為過去我們已製造苦難

  • there will be future suffering too.

    未來,苦難將會繼續

  • The future is just the echo of our past actions.

    未來只是反映過去的所為

  • For a long time, we have been filling

    長久以來,

  • the world around us with our

    我們已將所處的世界

  • anger and greed.

    填滿了憤怒及貪婪

  • And now it is still there.

    現在,世界就是這種樣貌

  • For example, in the reactions and the feelings

    舉例來說,憤怒和貪婪存在身旁人們的反應和感覺中

  • of the people around us, in various situations.

    存在各式各樣的情境裡

  • The suffering we have previously created

    我們先前所創造的苦難

  • will now create new suffering.

    在將來會製造新的苦難

  • Karma Suffering creates suffering.

    「業」-- 從苦難中創造苦難

  • So, is there a way of actually prevent

    所以,真的有方法能使將來

  • future suffering?

    免於苦難嗎?

  • Yes, there is.

    是,是有的

  • Our past unwholesome Karma is like

    我們過去惡的「業」,

  • a drop of dirty water on the bottom

    就像大甕底部的

  • of a big jar.

    一滴骯髒水珠

  • It is there.

    它就在那裏

  • We cannot change it.

    我們無法改變它

  • We cannot remove it.

    無法移除它

  • But we can add clean water.

    但我們可以在甕中加入乾淨的水

  • Drop by drop. Little by little.

    一滴一滴地﹔一點一點地

  • After some time, the jar will contain

    一段時日過後,甕中將再度溢滿

  • almost perfectly clear water again.

    幾近純淨的水

  • Karma Drop by drop.

    「業」--積少成多

  • Since we cannot get rid of our

    既然我們無法擺脫

  • unwholesome Karma,

    惡的「業」

  • we need to dilute

    我們需要削弱

  • and thereby neutralize it.

    進而抵銷它

  • Rather than creating new suffering again and again,

    除了一再創造新的苦難

  • we need to prevent suffering.

    我們需要防止苦難

  • Therefore, we need to replace our anger

    因此,我們需要以愛和良善

  • and greed with love and kindness.

    取代憤怒和貪婪

  • We need to be in control.

    我們必須克制

  • By meditating we learn to be mindful.

    藉由冥想,我們學會正念

  • We learn to be in control of our actions,

    我們學會控制自身的行為、

  • our thoughts and feelings.

    思想以及感覺

  • So, finally,

    所以,最終

  • we will be able to create

    我們會為自己

  • less suffering

    為他人

  • for us and for others.

    創造較少的苦難

  • Karma Control instead of suffering.

    「業」以克制代替苦難

  • Our Karma is the bond that ties us

    我們的「業」是一種聯繫,它將我們

  • to past suffering

    聯繫到過去的苦難

  • and that will create

    也創造了

  • future suffering too.

    我們未來的苦難

  • If we want to be free, we need to cut

    若想不受束縛

  • this bond.

    我們必須切斷這個連結

  • We need to prevent the creation of

    我們要阻止

  • new suffering.

    新苦難的形成

  • So our life can be better

    如此,我們的未來

  • next week,

    下周

  • next year,

    明年

  • next life.

    來世,才能更好

  • Karma It is up to us

    「業」-- 由我們自己掌握

  • Everything wholesome. Nothing unwholesome. A Pure mind.

    萬物皆善無物為惡常保淨心

  • This is the past, present and future Buddhas' teaching.

    這是佛陀對於前世、今世與來世的教誨
