This is Phil with Android Central, and it’s time for the launch of theSamsung Galaxy S7
EDGE at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We’ve gotten our hands on the GS7 EDGE just
ahead of the event, so let’s take a look at what’s new in this latest Android flagship
smartphone. We’re talking about the 5.5-inch display. The much bigger battery. The return
of the microSD card. And, yes, it’s waterproof.
So This is the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. As the name implies it’s a lot like its sibling,
the Samsung Galaxy S7. It’s got the same internals — either a high end Qualcomm Snapdragon
processor or Samsung Exynos, plus 4 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes of storage. it’s
got mostly the same design, which definitely is a continuation of the Galaxy S6. And it’s
using the same microUSB port which let's it also work in the current generation Gear VR
.
But there are a few important differences in the GS7 edge.
The first is that it’s bigger. The Galaxy S7 has a 5.1-inch display — the GS7 edge
is larger at 5.5 inches. (That’s still smaller than the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 5.) It’s got
20 percent larger battery at 3600 mili-amp-hours. That’s a big battery, and it’s a big deal.
And the second is that edge display, which is more like what we had in the Galaxy Note
edge than in the GS6 edge. Samsung is using more pixels for the edge display this time
around, and you can do more with it.
You can load it up with app shortcuts. Or shortcuts to specific tasks. You can get the
weather and news. You can have browser shortcuts, tools stocks. You can have quick access to
your contacts for calling and texting. It’s highly customizable and a lot more useful
than before, and you can just easily swipe your way through them. (And you still have
that excellent edge bedside clock.)
Now The display in the GS7 phones — it’s still quad-HD AMOLED and it's still very gorgeous
— it's also has an always-on mode so you can check the clock or calendar at a glance,
and get basic notification information.
And the fingerprint-scanning home button is there, still flanked by capacitive buttons
for back and recent apps.
The other important features include the microSD card, which can add up to 200 more gigabytes
of storage for things like movies and pictures and music. But it’s not using the adoptable
storage feature in android 6.0. And speaking of that, yes, the GS7 edge is
launching with Marshmallow, the latest version of Android. It’s still highly customized,
of course, but colors are definitely more muted.
And it’s got a special games launcher and support for the new Vulkan gaming APIs. If
you've never heard the name Vulkan before, all you need to know is for developers will
make it a lot easier to make games and especially VR games — run more smoothly on your phone.
Now The camera is always a big seller Samsung’s top phones. The Galaxy S7 edge takes the total
resolution actually down a little bit to 12 megapixels. But the sensor itself uses larger
individual pixels that let in more light, and it's using a wider f/1.7 lens as well.
The end result is a lot more light is coming in, and that’s a good thing. Plus every
single pixel is now being used for phase-detection auto-focus, which is faster than ever. ANNNNND
it’s got optical image stabilization — that’s OIS. So shaky video and blurry pictures will
be less of an issue. We have no doubt that this camera is going to be good.
And that brings us to what may be my favorite feature in the Galaxy S7 edge — it’s got
an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. That is, it’s waterproof. And it’s waterproof
without having covering any of the ports with annoying flaps.
So there’s a very quick initial look at the brand new Galaxy S7 edge. It’s waterproof.
It’s got a huge battery. It’s got that excellent edge display.
And we’ve got so much more coverage coming your way from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Be sure to give this video a thumbs up, and head on down below to the description for
