This animation contains sound.Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves sideways, and idiopathic scoliosis means that the cause isn't known. The spine is made up of many small bones called vertebrae. These are separated by discs which allow the spine to bend. This structure of vertebrae and discs is supported along its length by muscles and ligaments. Many people have a slight sideways curvature of their spine and in most cases this is considered normal. Scoliosis is defined as a curve of more than 10 degrees. The curvature is often shaped like the letter S or C, and the spine may also be twisted. In scoliosis the vertebrae twist and curve. If you have scoliosis, you may have one shoulder blade higher than the other or it may be more prominent. Your hip may also be higher on one side. Here we show one shoulder blade higher than the other, and a hip which is higher on one side. To check if you have scoliosis, bend over from the waist with legs and arms straight and the palms of your hands together. If you have scoliosis, your ribs may be more prominent on one side when they are viewed from the back. You may also have one shoulder blade higher than the other, or it may be more prominent. If you suspect that you have scoliosis, get advice from your GP. This is the end of the animation. Click on the animation screen to watch it again.
