On December first, Mark Zuckerberg made two big announcements.
The first was that he and his wife, Priscilla, had a baby girl Max.
And the second was he plans to give away 99% of his Facebook shares over the course of his life.
A 45-billion-dollar gift.
Here are something you might not have pick up on the big headline news.
One, this is not Mark Zuckerberg's first big philanthropic gift.
He's probably most well-known for the a hundred million dollar gift he made in 2010
to the schools in the city of NeWark New Jersey.
That one didn't go quite so well.
The idea was to turn a very poorly performing school district into one of the country of best performing.
And that clearly hasn't happened.
He also gave a hundred and twenty million dollars in May, 2014 to Bay Area schools.
He's given gifts of 25 million dollars to combat Ebola, 75 million dollars to San Francisco general hospital.
And in November he gave 20 million dollars to the Education Superhighway, connecting American schools to the Internet.
He's not giving away all of this money at once.
It's a 45-billion-dollar gift if you look at the value of facebook shares right now.
He has said in the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that he will give
no more than one billion dollars per year of Facebook shares in the next three years.
The other interesting thing is the entity he created, the Chan Zuckerberg initiative
is a limited liability company, not a foundation, and it also will do some public advocacy.
One of the reasons he won't be giving away all of the shares quickly
is he wants to maintain voting control at Facebook.
Right now he has got 60% of the voting power at Facebook,
if he gives away too much shares he'll fall below 50% and not be able to control the destiny of company.
The amount of his gift this 45 billion dollars is huge.
If you look at it in comparison to the assets in the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation,
in 2014 there were 41.3 billion dollars in assets in that foundation
which is the largest private foundation in the world.
Other billionaires issue their congratulations.
Melinda Gates put a message on facebook, supporting Mark's decision
as the Richard Branson of the UK, version group
and Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York city and the billionaire head of Bloomberg L.P
congratulated Zuckerberg in his statement
and also asked when Mark's peers in Silicon Valley beyond would follow in his footsteps.
