Every nurse has a patient that reminds them why they became a nurse in the first place

Mine was Joe

我的那位病人是Joe

Joe was a beginning stage of Alzheimers

Joe是一個阿茲海默症前期病人

He had moments with and moments without his memory.

他時而有記憶，時而沒有記憶

But the hardest part about aging condition for Joe were his night terrors

但變老的情況對於Joe來說，最艱困的是他的每晚的惡夢

He'll wake up in the middle of the night, screaming out bloody murder

他會在半夜醒來，因為夢到血腥的謀殺而尖叫害怕

But if I just sit in there and held his hand for few moments, I can usually get him to calm down

但如我就坐在Joe身邊然後握著他的手，通常我都能讓他冷靜下來

But then he wanted to talk

但這之後他就想跟我談談

He would ask me if I can change his treatments

他會問我我可不可以改變他的療程

but I said, "No, Joe, I can't. I'm just a nurse."

但我說：「不，Joe，我沒辦法。我只是個護士而已。」

"But what about my medication, can you fix those?"

「那我的藥呢，你可以改一下嗎？」

And I said, "No, Joe. I'm just a nurse."

然後我說：「不，Joe，我只是個護士而已。」

But because I can't do those things for Joe

但因為我無法為Joe做那些事

We connected to another levels

我們某種程度上有了其他連結

He would ask me about volleyball

他會問我跟排球有關的事

We would talk about his grandbabies

他會跟我談他的孫子們

He would tease me about being the only nurse on the unit

他會笑我我是我們那個單位裡唯一一個護士

that can reach the gauze on the top shlef

可以拿到最高櫃子上的紗布

It was a lot of laugh with Joe

跟Joe在一起能有很多歡笑

But then one night, everything changed

但是就在一個晚上，所有事都改變了

I found him in his room crying

我發現他在他的房裡哭泣

And I went over to him and I lifted his his head up out of his hands, and I said,

我走向他，然後我抬起他深埋雙手哭泣的臉，然後我說：

"Joe, I know this is really hard."

「Joe，我知道這真的很困難」

"But you're not defined by this disease "

「但你不應該被你的疾病所綑綁」

"You are not just Alzheimer's"

"You are still Joe"

「你還是Joe」

And he looked right back at me

然後他馬上回看我

almost to look through me, and said,

"Nurse Kelly, then the same goes for you."

「Kelly護士，那我把同樣的話送回給你」

"Although you say it all the time, you are not just a nurse."

「雖然你總是說這樣說，但你不僅僅是一個護士而已」

"You are my nurse."

「你是我的護士」

"And you have changed my life because you cared about me."

「而且你改變了我的生命，因為你真的在乎我」

And that's when it hit me

這對我來說如當頭棒喝

Patients are people with family and friends

病人們也是有家人和朋友的

And I don't want to be a nurse that ever pretends.

而我不想要當那種假面的護士

Because you're not a room number and a diagnosis when you're in the hospital.

因為當你在醫院裡的時候，你並不僅是一個病房號碼或是診斷案例

You are a perosn, very first.

不論如何，你也是一個人

And Joe reminded me that the day that I'm a lifesaver.

Joe在那天提醒了我，我是一個拯救別人生命的人

I'm never going to be just a nurse.

並且，我不再僅僅只是一位護士而已。
