In this lesson, I am going to teach you  if the letter 'y' is a consonant or vowel.

I know many of you already  know the five main vowels:

So how can 'y' be a vowel?

First, let's just do a review of what  a consonant is, and what a vowel is.

The English alphabet has 26 letters. 21 are consonants and 5 are vowels. 

英語字母表有26個字母。21個是輔音，5個是元音。

The letter 'y' is definitely  considered a consonant. 

字母'y'肯定被認為是輔音。

Let's look at these words: 

讓我們來看看這些詞。

year

年

Yes, it has that clear 'y' /y/ consonant sound.

是的，它有那個清晰的'y'/y/輔音。

yellow

黃色

yesterday

昨天

you

你

young

your

It has that unique /y/ consonant sound.

它有那種獨特的/y/輔音。

But it doesn't always have that consonant sound.

但它並不總是有那個輔音。

Let's move on.

'y' can make many vowel sounds.

y'可以發出許多元音。

Let's look at the board.

讓我們來看看董事會的情況。

'y' can make the long e sound.

'y'可以發出長e音。

Like 'candy' or 'monkey'.

像'糖果'或'猴子'。

'y' can make the short i sound.

'y'可以發出短促的i音。

Like 'gym' or 'bicycle' or 'system'.

'y' can make the long i sound. Like 'my' or 'sky'.

'y' is considered to be a vowel if:

'y'被認為是元音，如果。

Number one.

The word has no other vowel like 'gym'.

這個詞沒有像'體育館'那樣的其他元音。

All English words need at least one vowel.

所有英語單詞至少需要一個元音。

So 'gym' has 'y' as the vowel.

所以'gym'有'y'作為元音。

Or 'my' or 'sky'.

或 "我的 "或 "天空"。

Number two.

第二。

The letter is at the end of a  word or syllable like 'candy'. 

該字母位於一個單詞或音節的末尾，如'candy'。

It's at the end. Or 'bicycle'. 

它在最後。或 "自行車"。

'bicycle' has three syllables 'bi-cy-cle'.

自行車 "有三個音節 "bi-cy-cle"。

The 'y' is at the end of the second syllable.

y "是在第二個音節的末尾。

'bicycle'

'自行車'

Or three, the letter is in the middle of a syllable like 'system'.

或者三，這個字母在一個音節的中間，如'系統'。

'system' has two syllables.

'系統'有兩個音節。

'sys-tem'

'sys-tem'

It needs a vowel.

它需要一個元音。

So 'system' The 'y' is the vowel.

所以'系統' 'y'是元音。

Is 'y' a vowel?

y "是元音嗎？

Well 'y' is more commonly pronounced as a  vowel, but officially, it is a consonant. 

好吧，'y'更普遍地被讀作元音，但正式來說，它是一個輔音。

But it is very common for English  teachers, when teaching the vowels,  

但對於英語教師來說，在教元音時，這是很常見的。

to teach 'a e i o u and sometimes y'.
