When I was in third grade, my mother left home to work as a migrant worker.

三年級的時候 我媽離開家 去當外籍勞工

When I was in seventh grade, we stopped hearing from her.

到了七年級時 我們再也沒有媽媽的消息了

I wanted to find her, to rescue her.

我想去找到她 拯救她

My mind was set on earning as much money as possible.

於是下定決心 盡可能去賺錢

My dream was to leave home, to leave the countryside and the mountains behind me.

我的夢想是離家 遠遠拋下這個山間農村

I was only 14 when I started to work at the factory.

開始在工廠工作時 我才14歲

I went to work because my parents worked so hard all year long

我不忍心爸媽整年都辛苦工作

to pay for my education.

只為了付我的學費

In China, every year, over 12 million teenagers leave home to find work.

中國每年有1200萬名青少年離開家找工作

They are part of 260 million Chinese

有2.6億的中國人

who must travel far from home just to make a living.

得離鄉背景 只為了求生存

My work days started at 8 a.m. and ended at 11p.m.

我每天從早上八點工作到晚上11點

There were no holidays. I only had one night off a month.

沒有假日 每個月只有一天晚上能休假

We sat there all day cleaning phone chips and using chemicals.

工作時 會坐一整天 用化學物清理手機零件

There was an Apple screen, and a Nokia screen.

包括Apple和Nokia的螢幕

When I wasn't eating or sleeping, I will be wiping something.

There was no other ventilation, no windows.

The smell was horrible at first, but I eventually got used to it.

My son's name is Ming Kunpeng.

我兒子叫做Ming Kunpeng

He just turned 26 years old.

This should be the best time of his life,

這應該是他人生中的黃金歲月

but unfortunately he was diagnosed with leukemia in May 2009.

但在2009年5月 他不幸罹患了血癌

After three examinations over twelve months,

經過歷時一年的三次檢查

he was confirmed to be occupational leukemia,

確定他罹患的是職業性血癌

an aggressive form of cancer caused by benzene.

是一種由苯引起的侵略性癌症

Benzene is a category one carcinogen

苯是第一類致癌物質

that is banned in most Western Countries for industrial use.

大部分西方國家都禁止工廠使用

China, maker of more than 50% of the world's cell phones, is an exception.

但中國 這個最大的手機製造國 仍在使用苯

Now I've been through 28 chemotherapy treatments.

我已經做過28次化療

My bones hurt a lot.

骨頭痛得要死

It feels like thousands of ants biting my insides.

感覺像好幾千隻螞蟻從體內啃食著我

It's really painful.

真的很痛苦

I've been living in this hospital for six years now.

我待在醫院六年了

It feels like a prison, and there's no way to escape.

感覺像住在牢裡 無法逃出生天

I feel like my life is over.

我覺得人生已經完了

I really don't know what to do.

完全無計可施

It took 19 months of struggle to prove my leukemia was workplace-related.

我花了19個月 想證明工作環境導致了骨癌

I petitioned to the government authorities many times

我向政府有關當局陳情了好幾次

and was sent home by force.

但都被強制送返

The factory manager called my coworker

廠長打電話給我同事

and told him not to tell other workers what was wrong.

叫他不要跟其他人說我出事了

There were several people who accompanied me to the hospital when I received the diagnosis.

我在醫院聽診斷結果時 有好幾人在旁邊

They carried a bag with them, a bag of money.

那些人帶了一大袋鈔票

They went ahead in my absence.

趁我不在場時 他們自己進行討論

They concluded my cancer was not caused from working at the factory,

那些人自行結論道 工廠與我的癌症無關

and I was denied compensation.

我拒絕了賠償金

When I was on the street, I would take a close look at anyone who had a physical resemblance to my mother.

走在街上時 我會仔細看有沒有人長得像我媽

I was worried what had happened to her, and that she was suffering.

我擔心她發生了什麼事 是不是在受苦

That's why I've been working so hard.

所以我才這麼努力工作

But now everything is...

但現在一切都…

everything is over.

一切都完了

You know what? When I was in the hospital, I couldn't walk,

你知道嗎 我住院 走都走不動

but I didn't dare tell my mother.

但我不敢跟我媽說

I had expected that I would be responsible,

我期待自己能負起責任

that I would try to relieve some of the burdens from my parents.

能減輕父母一部分的負擔

But the truth is, I ended up as their burden.

但實際上 我反倒成了他們的包袱

Six weeks after this interview, Ming Kunpeng committed suicide.

訪談後 過了六週 Ming Kunpeng自殺了

He jumped off the building.

他從高樓一躍而下

He ultimately chose to end his own life.

最終還是選擇自己結束生命

He couldn't take the struggle any longer-

他無法繼續承受痛苦了

the pressure of dealing with this illness,

無法繼續承受疾病的壓力

the factory, and benzene poisoning.

還有那間血汗工廠 以及苯中毒

I propose that we all stand up and hold a silent tribute for Ming.

我提議 大家起立為Ming默哀

We are all benzene patients.

我們都是苯中毒患者

For those of us who are alive, we need to fight for our rights, for justice

存活下來的我們 得捍衛自己的權利與正義

and live on.

然後 努力活下去

Benzene is a horrifying poison that causes cancer.

苯是一種可怕的致癌物質

We want to deliver a message to the public

我們想讓大眾知道

that benzene can be replaced by safer alternatives.

其實有更安全的物質能取代苯

We want brands to take responsibility for working conditions at their supplier factories,

希望品牌能對製造工廠的環境負起責任

and good occupational health and safety measures, and policies and practices.

負責職場健康與安全 與其相關政策措施

And banning the use of benzenes is part of that.

禁用苯 只是其中一個部分

It's just part of supply chain responsibility.

只是供應鏈責任中的一環

Benzene is widely used in various industries..

苯被廣泛使用在各個領域

Sporting goods, printing, and electronic products

像是運動產品 印刷 電子產品

as well as finishing materials contain benzene.

甚至建築原料也有含苯

Not only are the workers working in very toxic environments,

不只工人在有毒環境工作

but the customers who buy the products are also exposed to benzene

消費者同樣也會接觸到含苯商品

At the moment, consumers don't have a benzene-free choice.

目前消費者沒辦法選擇無苯產品

There are no benzene-free electronics,

市面沒販售無苯電子商品

so you can't go to a shop and ask for the one or the other thing.

所以你也不能向店家要求

But consumers can ask and can get in touch with brands,

但消費者可以連絡品牌業者

and say, "What is this whole issue with benzene? "

詢問 “你們如何處理苯的議題?”

"I'm worried and concerned about benzene poisoning,"

“我擔心購買產品會導致苯中毒”

and put some pressure on brands.

In China, over 200 million people are working in hazardous environments.

According to Chinese government statistics, one person will get poisoned by toxic chemicals every five hours; the majority from benzene.

Expert assert this number is much higher.

A benzene-free electronic device would cost consumers less than one USD more.

I thought about jumping from the building, but I didn't have the strength to climb on the roof.

I've come a long way now, and I'm strong enough to survive.
