In 1970 the government restricted cigarette advertising.

You could no longer advertise cigarettes on television, but you still could in magazines.

What's the cigarette companies going to?

D'oh.

Well, they targeted groups.

Women.

They told women that you could be more relaxed, even though the surgeon general said in 1964 cigarettes kill 400,000 people a year in the United States, but it could make you more relaxed.

Then it was mental.

Mental mental gave you a certain minty flavor.

Black cigarette smokers particularly like mental, and they disproportionately bought men full of cigarettes.

They used Jackie Robinson.

They used Willie Mays.

They targeted at the black community because the black community, they felt, was more vulnerable to cigarettes.

And then more black people disproportionately smoked cigarettes.

Still, today, that's the case.

So what they were trying to do was attached to organizations to issues social events, art shows, concerts anyway.

They could reach the community and get around the cigarette laws.

We've prevented advertising on television and also advertising the young people.

They targeted young people.

But that's another movie.

They called cigarettes cool back then.

Cool was kind of a jazz 19 fifties black little bit Kool cigarettes and even invented Cool Kor well, cigarettes as a way of saying, This is cool.

This is groovy.

This is the This is hip and this clip, which you're about to see, was sponsored by Chesterfield cigarettes.

They sold directly to the black community with all kinds of sponsorships.

It's very interesting to see how this is done and why this is done.
