  • I want people to know that I have seen all of that, and I've heard the comment.

  • What I did was wrong.

  • I'm very sorry it will not happen again.

  • No.

  • You'll both be aware that in the last few hours an urgent directive has gone out to N.

  • H S I.

  • C.

  • U doctors to the effect that if hospitals air using a lot off oxygen machines, the entire oxygen supply to the hospital can fail.

  • So what is being done to address that critical problem?

  • This is a very important operational question.

  • We have had a Nick Whitman failure, as I think you referenced on dhe.

  • We therefore had to divert some ambulances.

  • But this is the normal operation off the N hs.

  • When there are things like equipment failures, we have a system of flagging where there are potential risks or problems before they actually become a significant problem.

  • It is the strength of our system that we have these flags going off at regular intervals.

  • Except what happened yesterday was not a potential problem.

  • It was an actual problem.

  • This afternoon's warning by the intensive care society is entitled Safety Alert, including Riel World Incident that Rhea World being what for General.

  • Yesterday afternoon, coming up at eight o'clock, the queen will address the UK for only the fourth time during her reign shall acknowledge the pain, grief on financial hardship many of facing and praised the commitment of N hs and at the front line workers.

  • The address was coordinated closely with Downing Street and filmed by one cameraman in full protective gear alone in the room.

  • Her family, of course, has not escaped criticism in this crisis, notably Prince Charles, who flouted government advice to stay at home, going instead to his second home in Aberdeen, Sha on.

  • We'll be bringing you that address from the queen at eight o'clock now for an idea of what it's like on the N.

  • H s front line.

  • Right now, I've been speaking to Asset Doctor Asif Monaf, who's an acute medicine doctor at the Queen's Medical Center in Nottingham.

  • I asked him and his team how we felt about the loss of fellow health care workers to the virus.

  • Well, that makes it feel feels very lifelike.

  • You'd be looking at stuff started yours.

  • A lot of our stuff of one of sick, with soft isolating for 40 days quickly symptoms.

  • So that's what that he had a massive effect on already stricken health service work balls.

  • The last few years I've seen quite a lot of pictures coming doors.

  • It's bean Deacon incidents off public.

  • 19 bean.

  • Much more patient got tied to you.

  • And just generally, despite the good weather, many what the group itself at select initially and in spite of that self isolation they've put in hospital because they've not got any better on quite a few people.

  • What I do you And what about equipment?

  • How you on surprise?

  • What do you need more off supply?

  • As you can see my colleagues behind me guys trying to keep a brave, happy face in the midst of this kind of war.

  • We've got against the virus on their supply, something quite limited.

  • We've got quite such a mask, you know, from countries which is South Korea, China and Taiwan.

  • Surgical mask aren't adequate.

  • So we are still looking at more.

  • Have you be equal?

  • Cross damage s across all cross ventilators.

  • 49,000.

  • We need another 9000 to make it to preempt this surgeon pictures repairing and attentive, even unit.

  • Or the next few weeks, I can see that the team are trying to rally their spirits.

  • How Holland has it been to keep up wrong?

  • They must be very tough.

  • But I think as a whole nation come together, especially after Brexit, with the whole mission being divided.

  • I think point of answers really cultivate a sense of belonging.

  • We're holding it together.

  • The whole public sector public service is I've been really collectively strong Team behind us have done a great job.

  • We've got health assistance here.

  • We've got two nurses.

  • We've got a range of people here from all walks of life.

  • It's all damages is about initiative divers It's full of different experiences, different walks of life.

  • And I think as a group have been very high in moral, obviously, as he had mentioned over the weekend before two deaths.

  • And when you see your own healthcare pretzels die ankle, he admitted.

  • Back to you in my role does go down, but we've got a great response from all kind of very good, very supportive for the discount free, pizza free coffee on.

  • So that's really lifted up morale.

  • You're showing incredible bravery, but there must be some fear when you walk in to do your jobs every day.

  • Yes, certainly.

  • I think, you know, leaving house in the morning or leaving a night with elements of fear.

  • That's never bean there.

  • I think it most of our careers, you know, we know our jobs, our risk stricken.

  • It's all of the elements of riffs when you go to work in a hospital.

  • But not, you know that nearly as much as the husband of the few people can be assured doctors, nurses and health care providers.

  • But adequate peopIe will be provided across all trucks in the U.

  • K.

  • And I think we can actually rest assured the work, you know we'll be much safer than it is now.

  • What's your message to those at home?

  • All those not at home and out and about.

  • Stay safe.

  • Follow government guidelines for self isolation.

  • If your symptoms for one and one is needed for the cover, everything stayed here in terms of what you can and can't do.

  • Stay safe.

  • Stay at home on from our point of view.

  • Together, we've got this Dr Asif, one of our team there in Nottingham.

  • Thank you so much for joining us.

  • Thanks for all you're doing.

  • Thank you very much.

  • Well, the new labor leaders secure.

  • Starmer has pledged to work with Boris Johnson in the national interest through the Corona virus, said he said he would support the government if they decided to ban outdoor exercise.

  • But he insisted he would still call out the government over any failings in its strategy.

  • Earlier, I spoke to him and asked if he thought the government had acted too late in its response to the outbreak.

  • I think I have bean mistakes.

  • I wasn't convinced by the original strategy.

  • I don't think we've been moving quickly enough on tests on all protective equipment.

  • We're asking people on the front line on.

  • They are doing this to exercise incredible bravery and courage and what they're doing.

  • They deserve to be properly protected.

  • And so, of course, we'll push the government on that.

  • But we push the government not to score a point.

  • But we push the government to protect lives and protect our country and protect her front line.

  • There's an awful lot of talk about cooperation, national unity and so on.

  • How far does that go?

  • Do you see a situation where we could end up with a unity government that you would be opponent off?

  • Well, I spoke to Prime Minister yesterday.

  • We agreed arrangements between ourselves going forthe next few weeks and we'll operate to those arrangements.

  • We will be constructive.

  • But we do need thio.

  • Ask the difficult questions.

  • There's a role for the opposition in this in asking the difficult questions, because if those questions reveal an error that could be put right or something that's going to slowly that can be speeded up, then they'll have achieved their purpose.

  • But that has to be the purpose off them.

  • Do you suspect it'll that Boris Johnson has brought you in as a way to share out the blame for bad decisions.

  • Well, I don't know.

  • I don't think so.

  • But I think the most important thing is that the Labour Party plays its full part in relation to this crisis, and that's what it will do under my leadership.

  • For many people, this pandemic has made him rethink things.

  • We have a conservative government acting in ways, but only a few weeks ago would have been unimaginable.

  • Has it made you rethink any fundamentally long held beliefs?

  • I think it's absolutely clear that when we get through this and we will get through this, we can't go back to business as usual.

  • We now know so clearly who the key workers are.

  • For a long time they've been overlooked and badly paid.

  • They were last, and now they've got to be first.

  • We need to look at the N.

  • H s funding.

  • So if you're gonna clap our care workers, clap all of those on the front line.

  • We need to see that through with a promise of a better future.

  • The most recent YouGov polling showed that 52% of the public that the government has taken the right approach and they think well of the government.

  • What do you make of that polling?

  • And it certainly suggests that there is an uphill struggle for you is an opposite.

  • I think in a time like this and you could see it across the world, people need their government to succeed on whether you voted for the government or not.

  • We're all relying on it to get it right.

  • And so I think that is why the polls are where they are.

  • It's a natural reaction in a time of crisis across the world, because people are utterly reliant on the government to get it right and they want the government to get it right.

  • You must worry about where the Labour Party will position itself.

  • We now have a conservative government that's rolling out the state.

  • That's part nationalizing trains.

  • Where does that leave the lame part?

  • Well, let's get through this crisis.

  • There's going to have to be a reckoning that's going to have to be a different future.

  • We will lay that out with confidence in terms of exit strategy from the lock down.

  • One policy being suggested is tracking people's phones, whether that's all movement or their health.

  • I know you very strongly support civil liberties as, says your party.

  • But is that something you would consider?

  • Well, I think that we need to get the balance rights the moment.

  • The important thing is that people follow the advice that's in place, and I'd urge everybody to do that.

  • If further measures a proposed, let's hear what they are.

  • Let's hear the justification for them on take a judgment on it.

  • But we're not at that stage yet.

  • We're at this stage of urging people to follow the guidance that's already in place to kiss Donna, Thank you very much.

  • Thank you Now, since we spoke to the new Labour leader, he's been announcing some senior positions in the shadow cabinet.

  • Annalise dogs will be shadow chancellor, Leadership rival Lisa Nandi takes over a shadow.

  • Foreign Secretary Nick Thomas, Simon's will be shadow home secretary and Jonathan Ashworth will remain on as shadow health secretary following social distancing rules.

  • Is mission critical?

  • That's what the health secretary Matt Hancock has said, warning those flouting the rules were risking their own lives and the lives off others, with one park forced to close yesterday because too many people were flouting the rules Are home affairs correspondent Darkness.

  • Sonny has been finding out whether it's been better today, taking advantage of the empty roads, probably wondering where all the humans have gone.

  • This was the heart of the peak district today, where the stay at home message does seem to have gotten through well, almost wherever you come from today, you've come from Birmingham all the way to pick district.

  • You're not worried that you're breaking the guidelines about people not traveling unnecessary journeys, not traveling for more than an hour to get places.

  • Yeah, but obviously because we will isolating ourselves for, like, three weeks and stuff.

  • And then we had this like celebration that we had to like, go out and stuff, but and then now we just came for a picnic.

  • Here.

  • This village is usually teeming with visitors.

  • I've never seen the Peak District this quiet.

  • It's empty for miles around, apart from the odd walker will cyclist and journalist, of course, but he's been a different story over the weekend in crowded urban areas where people have fewer options for accessing green spaces.

  • In London today, the police were patrolling parks, telling cyclists and walkers who weren't following rules on social distancing to disperse Brockwell parking.

  • Lamberth was closed after thousands of people visited it yesterday, some to sunbathe.

  • It led to this warning from the health secretary.

  • I want to still allow the rules toe allow for exercise, for instance.

  • But if people aren't following the rules enough, then we will have to take further measures.

  • But the suggestion that people may be banned from exercising has led to concerns for the many hundreds of thousands who live in flats or poor quality housing who rely on parks.

  • There's also the question of enforcement.

  • Could the police really enforce that stopping people going out for their exercise every day?

  • Have you got the resources?

  • Well, it's all very difficult because we took what human behavior and we work with people and we engage with them and by consent, so it will be hard, but we're in a difficult situation.

  • There has also been criticism of the guidelines on exercise, which has led to different interpretations by different police forces.

  • The official emergency legislation says that during the emergency period, no person may leave home without reasonable excuse the problem being the word reasonable.

  • One of the excuses is to take exercise.

  • But again, there's no further clarification.

  • Darvish, a police, had been criticized for using drones to film people out.

  • Walking in the peaks today.

  • The force said their methods had worked, given how quiet it was.

  • Rose Clark is a park ranger who was out on patrol this afternoon.

  • But I think this last week people have really taken heed of the government's advised.

  • Yeah, I'm quite quite surprised, but quite pleased.

  • The government stressed again this evening that the more people follow the rules, the faster we will all be through this.
