As part of the multi-billion-euro Copernicus Earth observation project, the satellite will be sent into Earth's orbit from Europe's spaceport in French Guiana. It will be used to monitor sea ice, oil spills and land use, and to respond to emergencies like floods and earthquakes. The satellite carries an advanced radar instrument which will provide high-quality images of the Earth's surface. According to the European Space Agency, the mission will image the entire Earth every six days and has a minimum lifespan of seven years.
