And I mightremindyouinthatrespectof a verysimpletruth, onethatwearepronetoforgetthatwe, as a peopleforthefirsttimeinman's history, inman's longsearchforfreedom, recognizethatfreedomwasanendowmentofourcreator.

Weare a religiouspeople.
Weare a stronglyspiritualpeopleorwehavebeen.
Andbecauseofthisandthisonlywehavebecome a greatmaterialpeople.

It's waypasttimeforCongresstopassthisamendmentandplaceitbeforethevariousstatesforratification, and I challengetheCongresstodoitwiththisonesimplestatement.

Ladiesandgentlemen, That's whytheRepublicanPartygavestrongendorsementinitsneck 1964 platformto a constitutionalamendmentpermittingthoseindividualsandgroupswhochoosetodosotoexercisetheirreligionfreelyinpublicplaces.
Anditleaves a decisiononwhethervoluntaryprayersaretobepermittedin, forexample, publicschoolsuptothestateandlocalauthorities, notthenineappointedjusticesofourSupremeCourt.
And I remindyouthatthisispreciselywhatourConstitutionintendednow, unfortunately, and I saythiswithfeeling, theplatformoftheoppositionpartyisentirelysilentonthequestionof a prayeramendment.
OnaddressingtheAmericanBaptistConventioninMay, hesaid, Ifsomepeoplewhereisinterestedingoodschools, asinmakingGodpopularintheschool, I thinkthiscountrywouldbebetteroff.
